How Is The Quest 3?

My complaints against the earlier Quest models were leveled at the external cameras and the closed store, but it appears that those two issues have been fixed?

Now they only have cameras in the headset itself much like the Valve Index, which is okay since they can face a wall usually.

Can anyone confirm these things I heard about the store and is it good?

I seem to have bought a few games that only work on Quest on Steam, so i am considering this thing.

We have a Quest 3 there, bought it for my son already 4 months ago. But he's only playing Green Hell with it via Steam link and uses it for nothing else so far. He now took it up again during school holidays but it was lying in the corner unused for a while. Bought also an additional battery strap, comfort improved but it's still like 1.5 hours max and then you have to take it off, same for both of us.

I got myself into it enough that I got the thing up and running (had to do a firmware update with a cable, wouldn't even have started properly without it), but I am by no means a VR expert, this is the first device of its kind I have even held in my hands. It works OK and the image is good, no problem with recognising movements or with the controllers. Cameras are integrated, unless you mean some additional hardware.

I'm not sure what you mean by the 'closed store', but it looks like a mess, cannot find anything. I have only downloaded some rollercoaster demos that were free, and the son does not even look what's on offer (it's not like he has a credit card anyway). I'd imagine that one would have to browse the store on PC first and then find the app by the exact name on the headset. Haven't gotten around to making a Meta account for myself yet to check the store on the web.

Yeah that's VR, has a huge hurdle compared to flatscreen. It's great when you're in there, but to get in there...

...pffftt, do I have to get up? Clear the space? Put on the thing?

The quest 1 and I think 2 used to have external cameras that you needed to put up above your VR space. I mean cameras from Facebook aka CIA, i was very opposed to that. Vive and Valve Inde both use "base stations" that sens lasers(?) into the room to track you instead of cameras.

These new Quests 3 track inside out and can thus face the wall when not in use.

With closed store I meant that you could only play games from the Meta store on it, but I think that's changed because I bought some games on Steam that only work on Quest 3.

Not looking what is on offer is understandable since there is lots on offer and most of it is a bit... ...let's just say that VR is a new technology and needs some time to really get into its own. There is really fun stuff out there though. Although it very much depends on what you want.

This was kind of my worry as well, but you can play at least Green Hell sitting down and using the controllers to move. But I suspect this largely depends on the game, there was a number of options to set in this case.

The biggest annoyance with the thing is that even with the additional battery, it empties the batteries on its own in ~48 hours when off and not in use.

Seriously? It depletes its own battery?

Let it FACE THE WALL!!!

I am not joking or exaggerating that you should never let that thing see more than you are alright with it seeing like your balls rubbing on the camera.

If the thing is in your kid's room make very clear to your child that he is being spied upon by the CIA and that the CIA is not anyone's friend unless they want to screw said anyone over in some nefarious way.

Those cameras require darkness when not in use, it may be best to keep it in a closet or something where it cannot spy on anything except the occasional moth.

Ok, could be an idea. I don't think it makes a difference, it's been facing a wall alright and haven't seen any CIA agents (the old people on this street take care that not a single person passes without being logged and discussed).

As far as I know, only the original Oculus has external cameras. And yes, they were pure dogshit.

Quest 3 has significantly better visuals than the Quest 2, and it seems to me, longer battery life. It's a perfectly good choice for getting into VR.

There are some good games in the store, for sure, but a lot of unique titles are also only available through a Link and a PC.

As for storage, it comes in a box thats perfectly fit for it, just put it in there when not in use.

Just get Pico 4. Cheaper and better than Quest 3 in FOV/resolution and comfort if you don't care about meta store and use it only for PC.
