I must say, I've been curious about FF7 OG for many years but never got around to playing past the first battle in the train station (about 2 minutes in). But I finally obtained a copy after much anguish, indecision and research on which port or version to play (there must be at least 10 of them by now not including the remakes and spinoffs). Considered the PSX original in emulation but I want at least some QoL stuff. So I finally settled on the Switch version. Seems to give the most authentic experience with even original MIDI music and 15 FPS in battle, and bug fixes, of course. May the God of jRPG Emus be with me.
Really poor choice. All you need is either the original PC release or the Steam version and Reunion.

Screw that. Emulate original PSX for zero fucking around, absolute stability, OG quality, and most notably HardType romhack if you've played the game even once before. That Reunion mod, a good chunk of it is in fixing the game to be more like the PSX version. The dealbreaker is no HardType mod though.

Still, yes, the ultimate poor choice is initial PC release with MIDI music...that's just playing the game wrong, no two ways about it.

What a coincidence! I spent two hours forum-diving on the Codex yesterday to collect PS2 and PSX recommendations. I won't play all these in a hundred years, but gotta download those ISOs for safekeeping before they get taken down.

Maybe it helps.

Not necessarily interested in the main topic of this conversation, ironically enough most Japanese games that western players would enjoy tend to not get translated since the Japanese didn't find it worth trying to translate (Rejection, most of the Lunatic Dawn games outside of a few with a fan translation) but some of the choices you got recommended seem strange. I presume whoever said the rest of the Persona games but not 1 was presumably suggesting the PSP version, since the US release of the original, while mostly the same game, had a few stupid localization changes. And just one of the Deception series? I wasn't aware that there was anything wrong with Deception I/Trapped, I believe the name was. And a lot of these have superior ports on other platforms, for instance, X-Men Legends 2 has a much better PC port, including mods that add in other characters.
That said, I'd suggest adding Addi no Okurimono, Germs and Welcome House, which all have English translations of varying quality, and are all really nice games, at least for one playthrough.

Yeah that seemed bizarre to me. The series actually has 4 games, Trapt (sp?/sic) was the fourth. Definitely recommend checking them out, very cool premise with some flawed execution. Maybe one day we'll get a good sequel/successor. My best description would be something akin to a grimdark version of Home Alone with rpg elements for improving your traps. I liked 3 the best, iirc.

Huh, apparently there's a Deception 4 as well. Cool.

Oh, yeah, I kept thinking it was an alternative name for the first game. It's one of those weird games where you could describe it as a RPG but it doesn't really play as one, since you get role-playing choices and stats, but because you're tricking enemies into traps rather than fighting them it isn't really a RPG.

Anyone know if "Beacause retranslation" version of FFVII is better than original? Not sure which one to download to my PS1 games folder. From torrent description:
Beacause is a Final Fantasy VII relocalization. It is a complete retranslation and relocalization
from the ground up, based on the original Japanese. The aim is to have an end product that
is accurate and professional. Official sources have been used to minimize errors in context
and spelling. The project's name "Beacause" comes from a misspelling (in the original
localization) of the only line spoken by Jenova.

The original translation will lie to you when it gives game hints. Between that and Beacause, the latter is the clear winner. That said I know Squenix made much needed changes to the original script for the many rereleases of FF7 (from PS4 up), and I believe that's been ported to PSX too.

I have no clue how to tell which official PSX version is the one with changes so I guess I'll just grab the retranslation.

You really need to ask if it's better than the original rushed fanfic slop? Not to mention Beacause fixes and enhances like a billion other things.
Also
a) the psx version is outdated and afaik there's no official torrent for it so I have no idea what you're downloading. Use the official site.
b) the PC version (with Beacause) is superior in every single way

The changes are miniscule and mostly irrelevant.

"much needed" translation. OMG the game had a typo in the word "because", lets grab a complete rework of the entire script made by JRPG fanboy weirdos.

The restranslations may very well be great, but the original script is fine outside of some errors here and there. It doesn't warrant a heavy-handed approach.

Eh whatever, can't complain, it's fanmade in their own time and distributed for free. It's not like the "remake" for instance. They took the game's TUTORIAL (Midgar is the game's tutorial) and padded the ever-living fuck out of it into a 40 hour game, complete with maximum cringe and filler. Only in this pathetic modern clown world is that not only acceptable, but has its praises sung by the masses and is nominated for GOTY.

original script is fine
The original script is famously bad as it was literally done by a single guy under a heavy crunch. It's full of typos, complete mistranslations and various omissions. It's almost on par with Xenogears translation wise. You need to be completely braindead to think it's fine.

Mistranslations and omissions doesn't necessarily = bad. It just results in something else than was originally intended. And what that result is is one of the most beloved and acclaimed JRPGs of all time, which its story plays a big part in. Typos do matter but it's really negligible. Keep on being you, I guess. It's fine.
