(For the clueless: the Disgaea games are - infamous - SRPGs for consoles)

disgaea.jpg

By now there is an additional Disgaea - Disgaea D2. Fortunately that game is only available on the PS3 and thus I am not tempted to complete that one too. I do not own any non-portable consoles and there is no way I am going to play Disgaea on a non-portable anyway.

Platform
Which brings me to my platform recommendation: The PS Vita is the ultimate Disgaea station by far. All four games are available in the online store and look great on that platform. Disgaea uses simple 2D graphics, 1 & 2 even relatively low-res ones which look much better on a small screen. More importantly Disgaea's strength (for me) is that it is the ultimate time killer. Spend an hour when and where you want doing fabulously brainless grinding to relax.

Gameplay - Grinding
Which brings me to the gameplay of Disgaea. It is rightfully called the ultimate (single player) grinder, because of the "post-game" features, the roguelike-ish item world etc. which means you can easily spend hundreds of hours grinding if you REALLY want to complete every single map and beat even the uber-uber-uber-boss extreme badass edition 2X. The main game / plot does not require that much grinding however. Still if you are one of those people who hate grinding with passion stay the hell away from Disgaea.

Personally I like well-done grinding and Disgaea 1 and 2 feature the most fun grinding I have ever experienced. Unfortunately, Disgaea 3 and 4 are not even in the same league. I have to say that I almost considered not completing Disgaea 4 when I faced the prospect of having to grind some more to complete the last few maps. The primary difference between the two systems is that in 3&4 you simply buy everything with "mana" and to get mana you simply kill enemies. That simplifies (and speeds up) grinding a lot and ruins the fun for me.

Gameplay - Tactics

I can honestly claim to have played most SRPGs released outside of Japan (I am a big fan of the genre but do not understand Moonspeak) and very few require actual "strategy" .. and Disgaea is no exception there. Except for a few things which should be obvious to the average 12 year old boy there is no thinking involved. If you are looking for tactical challenge look elsewhere. This for me is by the way not a bad thing. I play Disgaea to relax i.e. when I want to rest my brain.

Style and plot

Disgaea is totally goofy and does not pretend otherwise, careless fourth wall breaking and all. If you are looking for Bioware deepness here you should - again - look elsewhere. And - again - this is a feature not a bug for me. The art - silly Jap cartoon style - fits the theme. Disgaea is very Japanese in general and thus occasionally a little pervert from a Western point of view. However there is no actually pornographic content. At this point I would like to illustrate the goofyness and art style of Disgaea with a video:

(Note that you can turn off those attack animations)

Where to start

Disgaea 1 - no question. The first game features the best comedy, characters and plot and the game mechanics are almost as good as in Disgaea 2.

Tl;dr: Disgaea is my favorite SRPG series but certainly not for everyone.

I always wanted to play this game but I was afraid my ravenous autism would get the better of me. I know people who have dedicated obscene amounts of time to this game series.

Finished as in "finished the storyline" or as in "got all my chars to level 9999 and then started grinding Baal and reincarnating"?

As in finished the main storyline in each. I have also done some of the post-game content but not that much e.g. I have completed Axel Mode in Disgaea 2.

No Disgaea D2? No hype for Disgaea 5? Fucking poser.

As I said, I am not interested in non-portable Disgaea. Also the series seems to get worse and worse. My ranking is:

1. Disgaea 1
2. Disgaea 2
3. Disgaea 3
4. Disgaea 4

I definitely agree. Disgaea 1 has the most charming plot, characters and branching narrative. The gameplay is still fresh and there are plenty of things to do. Progressively, the game just gets more and more stale (and the story/characters more and more dull).

Not to ention that the later installments keep bringing in more and more bullshit mechanics instead of working on what they have.

Yup, I gave up on Disgaea 3... played D4 for like half an hour at a friends house but just couldn't give a damn anymore. :/

Considering how many sequels and ports and remakes they've done, they're clearly satisfying some sort of niche.

I've only beaten the first two games, but I'll probably play the others too some day.

Though my personal favourite is Makai Kingdom. I found the writing to be on par with the first game Disgaea 1 (La Pucelle is the first game like that they made iirc), and the gameplay felt well designed overall.

Though I've never really felt like Disgaea's item worlds were a grind. If I wanted levels on people, or phat lewtz, my general strategy is to get to as low a floor as possible on as high a level item as I can manage, and then clear a few floors with the geo block system, which is basically just a rather interesting puzzle to solve each time (the logistics of trying to set off a perfect chain with 5-6 types of tiles on a large map with effects like 'Clone' or 'Monsters gain 20 levels' is non-trivial.) I suppose stuff like properly levelling up items and dicking around with innocents or whatever on them would feel pretty grindy, but I never felt any need to do that stuff.

As part of this niche they satisfy it very well and i will buy a PS4 to get 5.

They all have this strange and stupid charm that i love. It is simple and fun with all the stupid amount of debt and subsystem i could ever want.

For similar experiences try Makai Kingdom, Soul Nomad and the World Eaters, or Phantom Brave. All of them connect to the Disgaea verse in some way.

I recommend Soul Nomad, for a Nippon Ichi game it is kinda different. Also New Game+ is actually interesting.

I think it's the only game where i finished the new Game +. And it is indeed very funny.

Any of you Disgaea experts know if Disgaea DS is a worthwhile port? I've been mildly interested in the series and my options are pretty much either get it for my DS or to not remove a PS2 copy from an inventory and play it through an emulator.

Disgaea DS is an overall improvement of the original Disgaea on PS2, for starters you have a mini map in the top screen that really helps with those pesky geo chain combos, you can speed up the animations considerably in the options menu and you get to recruit some special characters.
Whenever I am on a train trip it's Disgaea time.
