I like Halo! It has a great story!

New Emil interview:

With every new piece of game software that strikes a chord with people who’ve longed for good stories in games (see Mass Effect, BioShock, Half-Life 2, Oblivion and the Halo series for recent examples), the importance of a good yarn seems to be increasing.

Look at some of the writing in Mass Effect or BioShock—games that are recognized as being story-heavy and having good stories.
Scary shit.

"If you live an interesting life and you’ve encountered interesting people all the time, the inspiration is easy."

So, VD any chance you drew up any NPC from real life inspirations in AOD??

Aw, come on, Halo's story was more interesting than Oblivion's.

Halo had a pretty good story for a FPS.

BTW LOL dudes, let's get more pics of FO3 devs and make fun of how funny/stupid/unattractive they look. It's so totally funny/witty and never gets old.

Yes, it's just not told through cutscenes... or dialog... or anything, for that matter.

It is there, you just have to look for it, and no, I don't like Half Life 2.

As for the OP:

Good story (XX)=(XX) Interesting Characters/Problems/Ideas

Good story = Bad guys lose and good guys win, epix.

Welcome to 2008 =/

I'd like to say people just don't know any good stories, but people really DO think these stories are hot shit.

To be fair:

I think the subject matter of the Halo universe (not the way it is presented, especially in Halo 1/3) is somewhat interesting.

Sadly when the devs tried to make it at least a BIT more interesting (OMG TEH ALIENZ ARN'T, LIK GETTING SHOTTED ANYMORE WHAI IS THEY GOOD NAOW?? FUXX IS THIS?) they got slammed by fans for humanizing the 'uber-enemies of evil hax'.

As for Mass Effect, I'll play it when it hits the PC.. I guess.

WTF? Halo's story craps on that of Oblivion. Not that that is relevant to Emil's masterfull spin-story though.

Ah, feels so good to be stabbed in the back for quadruple damage.

I'm gonna be honest. Mass Effect had the best story of any video game. It had blue people and the threat of universal annihilation by the hand of a insectoid alien race. It was so cool. It was cooler than Star Wars all the way (well, except for Episode 1. That was better.).

Wow. Certainly lots of interesting opinions here -- which, of course, is what being a Fallout fan is all about. smile.gif

ttsec -- Honestly, naivety had nothing to do with it. I knew quite well how some of the hardcore fallout fans would ultimately view Bethesda's take on Fallout 3. And, as lead designer, I knew I would be the subject of much of that criticism. It comes with the territory. I wouldn't have accepted this position if I weren't prepared to deal with that.

And you're right, I did think "Oooh Fallout! I liked Fallout. It'd be fun to make a Fallout 3. Let's mingle with the fans!" I still think that, every day I walk into the office, and it's the reason I'm responding to this forum right now. I love interacting with the fans, and I love being a part of the community. That said, I also refuse to be villified or accept that I -- or any other member of the Fallout team -- is somehow doing something wrong simply because we're making the game we want to make. Sorry, that's just now how I roll.

I do admit that I, personally, have done a pretty crappy job of interacting with the fans on a regular basis. The reason is actually pretty simple -- being lead designer of Fallout 3 keeps a guy crazy busy. I also have a family, and 4 kids, so in the end something's got to give... and the thing has been me interacting with the fans. But reasons are only reasons to the person giving them -- to everyone else they're excuses. So, I'm really going to try to get better at that.

Anyway, if you're wondering if we're actually reading the forums, seeing what you guys are discussing... I think you've got your answer.

Till next time,

Emil

Still funny that despite 'Oooh Fallout! I liked Fallout. It'd be fun to make a Fallout 3.' He decided that it would be a bad idea to have even a single person who worked on Fallout work on Fallout 3.

And still no "Have you played Fallout?" question on their blog.

I wonder if he'll decide to come here to meet the fans one day.

Why meet the fans when he can meet the pretenders claiming to be fans, simultaneously looking like a real hero to the gaming press? This is why they've never come here to garner true feedback about the game, and the direction they are taking FO3 clearly shows this.

It's a bummer, really.

So, it's official? They don't give a shit what fans say and will do whatever they want to Fallout 3?
That's hardly news, though.

So I should expect that the Fallout 3 story is going to touch me deeply and move me on an emotional level that I've never felt before?

... or was this just another one of those articles designed by the marketing department to protect Bethesda in the event of massive fan backlash when the game's released? You know, they get to point to all those articles about how shitty the fans are and say "see! We are holy warriors of justice, even all the gaming mags - whom we slipped exclusive previews and got to ask us questions about the fans - agree with us!".

You listen to the fans and respect their ideas
The Fallout fan's a clever little bastard. You can track him for days and days until you really get to know him like a friend. He knows you're there, and you know he's there. It's a game of wits. You hate him, then you respect him, then you beguile him.

I lack the wit to put something hilarious here
BIOSHOCK! Is there a single interview, article, preview or review left on the internet nowadays that doesn't use the word Bioshock?

BIOSHOCK!
BIOSHOCK! BIOSHOCK
SHOCK UR BIOLOGY WITH BIOSHOCK
