I like Halo! It has a great story!

"If you live an interesting life and you’ve encountered interesting people all the time, the inspiration is easy."

So, VD any chance you drew up any NPC from real life inspirations in AOD??

You can't really write characters in any other way than drawing them from real life. Question just being how much you change them from the inspiration or possible mix people together etc.

Okay, it is possible he based all his characters on Bioware characters. ;)

no. Andhaira threads have serious titles that work like a trap making you click the thread without looking at the author. and then it's too late.

but really - someone writing at the codex that Halo has a great story? who will take that seriously?

Halo and it's epic quality correlates to the amount of cash Joseph Goebbels recived for using his Nazi magic on the propaganda machine. Give him the bucks and you will have a lifesize mine from Minesweeper at Madame Tussauds.

So, the major inspiration to F3 is from the gaming versions of Michael Bay movies. Somebody send the guy a copy of Mafia or something. Feck, even GTA series have a deeper storyline than ME, Bio or Halo. (Well up to Vice City atleast, GTA:SA is an awful clusterfunk)

Relax, it's just his opinion. After all, Bioshock had probably the deepest story and characters he has ever seen.
Well, maybe except Master Chief.

Bioshock wasn't a masterpiece but it was a good game. It certainly was one of the most enjoyable shooters I played.
It had many elements I'd like to see in more FPS games- it was more story oriented, had great art direction, NPCs with character, and some depth [depends if you hate Aynd Rand ;P ].

Halo had a good story, eh? No, the story was floating comfortably in the huge sea of medicority. I will refrain from commenting his claim about Oblivion.

With every new piece of game software that strikes a chord with people who’ve longed for good stories in games (see Mass Effect, BioShock, Half-Life 2, Oblivion and the Halo series for recent examples)

Mass Effect = Don't know, waiting for the PC version

Bioshock = Somewhat, at least the beginning

Half-Life 2 = Definitely, awesome story.

Oblivion = No.

Halo = DEFINITELY not.

Ayn Rand would be turning in grave if her skeleton could hear all the comparisons retarded people did between her philosophy and Biocrap. Fake depth in a game is no better than lack of it and as a shooter Bioshock is a complete failure, like Dark Messiah of Might and Magic its special powers are fun when you are trying them for the first time but it turns into a boring mess when you are doing the same moves again and again and the movement, feel of your character doesn't quite match the pure action of a FPS like F.e.a.r.

The only thing it has for it is the art direction. But then, Half Life 2 had good art direction too and was nearly ok as a shooter.

what was so awesome about HL2 story?
right now it feels like some soap opera where you expect the next episode just to see what bad things will happen to Alyx this time.

bah, Valve even wanted to make episode 1 without gordon freeman but with Alyx as a main character at some point.

Hehe, I enjoyed Dark MESSiah of Might and Magic also, or rather just one aspect of the game- melee combat. Enough to play the game to the end and not regret it.

HL2 was pretty cool, loved the ending. Then they pussied out in ep1 by having the vorts do their teleportation magick and rescue Alyx, which was balls. Still, I loved the overall mood of ep1. Ep2 was just too predictable. Oh and they should have killed off Barney, that would have had some emotional contact 'cos Barney is your buddy, everyone has someone like that. But I don't give two shits about
Alyx's dad

Here's a phillisophical question that will, likely, bring some heat but I think that it's worth asking for a clear answer and I respect people having different views that they are willing to stand by, even if they are wrong .
Do you think that turn-based, isometric RPGs are outdated or inferior and a thing of the past that should not be in furture games?

Oh, hell no. Just because that's not what Fallout 3 is, and not the type of game I prefer to make, doesn't mean I don't love a good turn-based, isometric RPG. I played the hell out of Silent Storm (not an RPG per se, but similar enough), and I'm a big fan of Jeff Vogel's games. I love good games, regardless of genre or perspective, honestly.

That said, if you look a video and computer game trends in general, console games have become a lot more popular -- and are a lot more profitable -- and that has certainly affected game publishers' willingness to finance those types of games. Look at the NPD numbers of the best selling PC games of 2007 vs. the best selling console games. We're talking a difference of, in some cases, a million+ copies. Thankfully, console developers are learning how to make these types of games for consoles, learning how to overcome the obvious interface issues. Hell, the Penny Arcade Adventures game for Xbox Live Arcade is, for all intents and purposes, exactly the type of game you're talking about. Personally, I can't wait to get my hands on that.

Yes, HL2 Episodes have regretably become somewhat EMO.

Yo Valve, more Greg Egan, less Danielle Steel, r00fles!

Valve pussied out in HL2 with vortigans already. like - vortigans are your allies? hello?

HL1 on the other hand actually had some story - but it also had some badass setting which was pretty good and constantly brought something new including easy, but still puzzles.

HL2 already felt like emo story. well not at first - but right from the point where Alyx appeared.

also who the hell is that g-man guy? Valve is totally missing the whole point in all this recent fluff by not telling us who is he.

G man is just an illusion of good story telling. You can create an infinite number of wacky bizzaro stuff without giving a real explanation. And then the fanboys will go crazy over the "excellent" "creativity". That's how King's Dark Tower works, btw.

Exactly. Whenever they reveal a bit about G-Man I usually cringe because its so shitty. It'll never be as good as it is in your mind. They should just leave him unexplained, but instead they're gonna tell us the whole story in ep3. My bets is that it'll suck.

why? because it will definitely suck. it must suck. because there are too many illogical things they need to explain, all these friendly vorts, invaded cities, g-man at last...
and besides HL is too good cash-cow to simply end it like that. HL is their flagship game. other valve's games are not so popular except CS.

:derail: This reminded me of how I had wished Future Shock to be more like an "adventure-shooter", kind of like Cybermage and Bethesda's previous Terminator game released in 1990 instead of a straight shooter. The name "Future Shock" had such a punch to expect something more varied, or so I felt. Still, it was a good game, ahead of its time. Also obligatory mention of how both examples were games with interesting mechanics and ahead of their time as opposed to NeoBeth.

Back to the topic; F3? Lost even the interest to mock.

I don't mind them being allies, they already behaved non-aggressively a number of times in HL1, and not just only when running after having their bum pumped full of lead, it's that they are now some sort of hivemind of Yodas that bothers me. I mean, WTF?

also who the hell is that g-man guy? Valve is totally missing the whole point in all this recent fluff by not telling us who is he.
They'll probably reveal it in the end. I just hope it won't be a STALKER kind of "LOL WTF that's lame" revelation.

The story is another iteration of the freedom against tirany with some elements rehashed, its deeper than most, considering how ample the concept of this struggle is underneath the hood.

But you'll never really care about the story, if you are really immersed into the chapters of Half Life you'll suffer from virtual character aprehension syndrome. I know because I did, it has to be one of the best games I ever played.

To answer your question in a few words: the key isn't the story, but the direction.

Yes, it's just not told through cutscenes... or dialog... or anything, for that matter.

Half Life is well known for having the best plot in it's genre. That's right - you won't see any cutscenes, everything is "real time". You actually have to pay attention to what is going on on the screen!! I know, it's terrible
