I'd suggest against adding any graphical replacement stuff if you never finished it. You'll keep finding something that's not as beautiful as everything else and then you have to fix it and then fall into a graffix spiral. Last time I gave up, I noticed I was hunting down new bottle textures. No, not the potions in the inventory, I mean these clutter bottles.

I heard there was another alternate beggining mode where you start in a dungeon like daggerfall but i thought that was too cute.
By the way, i think you might be wrong refusing to use starfire ecology, since, goddamn am i sick of killing rats/guars. It makes walking about less idiotic.
I'm interested in a good combat mod now. The one DraQ suggested seems the best, but the author himself is badmouthing it in the download page. Keep in mind i can't use MWSE.

There's also a mod that lets you choose starting points other than the ship. "New beginnings", or something like that. And another one that lets you play as a Thri-Keen from Dark sun, and another that lets you play as one of the snake dudes from Akavir.
Btw, it's Sabregirl's Ecology, not Starfire's. It adds mostly non agressive herbivores, with the ocasional wolf and mountain lion, so it's more for eye candy than combat.
