Wut, it's just out on Early Access. No shareware:

PreOrderSteamImage.png

ION MAIDEN will release for Windows PC, Mac, and Linux in Q3 2018. Early Access owners will be granted immediate access to an exclusive multi-hour preview campaign! (PC, Linux)

3D Realms is proud to bring back the Build engine, which powered Duke
Nukem 3D, Blood, and Shadow Warrior, in all of its hand-crafted pixelated glory.

We’ve spent a lot of time tinkering under the hood to take advantage of new technology and techniques. Bigger levels, hundreds of new colors, and morphing maps that transform mid-level are all just a few of the advancements made to the engine.

The full ION MAIDEN experience will be available in English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, and Russian in Q3 2018.

Features.png

The full ION MAIDEN experience will includes the following features;

  • The true successor to classic shooters such as Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior and Blood.
  • Built using the original "Build" engine, with additional enhancements to further improve the technology.
  • Beautiful hand-crafted artwork, built using original old-school tools and methodologies.
  • 7 exciting Zones, each spanning multiple maps.
  • Tons of enemies, weapons and carnage!
  • Best of both worlds! ION MAIDEN brings back the classic '90s FPS action you love, with modern additions such as physics and checkpoints.
  • Classic level design, no procedural generation! Expect multiple paths, cool effects, and complex set pieces!
  • True tracked module music!
  • Incredible weapons with alternate firemodes!
  • Easy access to development tools and modding (Steam Workshop) on day one!
  • ... And about Multiplayer... Stay tuned!

Why Early Access?
“For Ion Maiden, we wanted to develop a special "Preview Campaign" which is available through Early Access. The campaign is specially made to introduce people to the world of Ion Maiden.

Our Early Access is not like traditional Early Access games.
The Preview Campaign is a fully finalized and polished product, which you can all play right now.

During the Early Access period, we'll periodically update the campaign and introduce new features and content to the game.

Later this year, the full Single-player Campaign will be released as a free update to all of you!”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?
“6 Months”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?
“The Full Version of Ion Maiden will include a range of additions.
A completely new campaign, as well as the following features:
Stay tuned!

What is the current state of the Early Access version?
“The current Early Access version is called "Preview Campaign", and includes an exclusive Ion Maiden Mini-Campaign.

This will later be updated to the full version of the game.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?
“No”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?
“Community feedback will help us improve and perfect ION MAIDEN.

With the developers being long time veterans of the most active Build Engine community there is, making something cool and actively listening to community feedback to create the best possible game has been our goal since day one.

Through Steam, and our Discord, we'll actively listen to the community during the development of ION MAIDEN. So tell us how you feel about level design, gameplay elements, sound, and anything you deem important. We'll take it into account for the full game.

The community has always been the back-bone of 3D Realms titles such as Duke Nukem 3D and Shadow Warrior, and will continue to be so!”

I fucking hate the early access model, and they're brave taking that approach. Shareware seems to make better business sense to invoke further nostalgia, get as many people playing and interested as possible which is needed as I doubt the potential player base will be huge, and then release the full game. But what do I know.

Checkpoints are a) very much old school, and b) actual highly prestigious game design if done right.

I'm fapping very cautiously over here.

edit: Also, why not release the first episode as shareware?

edit: watch this destructoid preview instead if you want less retardation than the vid beneath:

Game jurnaloost#1: "wah wah I don't like keycards and backtracking"

Meanwhile we have Game Jurnaloost#2 implying old school shooters never went away and points to Strafe to support that argument.

:nocountryforshitposters:

Anyhow, game seems very hitscanny, there's minimal enemy variety, and level design seems a bit too concerned with realism, but this is only impressions based on the first level and hopefully things incline later.

The level design is good, but the game doesn't have any achievments.
There are some enemies which are not hitscan, not sure about the rest but you can definitely outstrafe their fire, so it's not popamole.
But even if it was popamole - so is Soldier of fortune which is the best shooter.

That's...a bit ridiculous and indicative of easy game difficulty. Each secret is a reward, which therefore makes the game easier. So the game better be designed around finding a portion of these secrets mandatory, or make it so they don't all reward health and ammo and other such major difficulty economy influencers.

I won't say anymore without having played it though.
