Is there anywhere to rent games any more?

I want to play Super Mario Galaxy 2. But red box and netflix killed blockbuster and hollywood video and everything. I honest'y don't think my town has a single video rental store. Is that even something people do any more, rentals?

Gamefly works pretty well for me. In fact, that's how I played Super Mario Galaxy 2. Good rental, but would have been a bad purchase.

Course if you're looking for a brick and mortar solution, you're probably out of luck. Kinda sucks.

Someone is going to say Steam.

Gamefly is shit. They would be great if they had netflix's turnaround, but instead they'll send you a game and charge you full price before you even receive it. I tried it for a while and found a used game trading site more efficient.

It's not exactly renting but if you're american or canadian the trading website I use to get all my games is much cheaper than pretty much anything else other than pirating. You have to pay $1 for each game received and shipping for the shit you send out. I don't want to sound like a plant so I won't post the name of the website unless someone is interested.

In the case of Super Mario Galaxy, if you have a PC capable of running the latest popamoles you might as well get the Dolphin emulator and a rom. Both Mario Galaxy games run pretty well.

edit: oh wow, before I even made my post, and the exact poor predictable codexer I had in mind

NO. Renting games harms the gaming industry. You must buy a new copy or else game developers will starve to death and you will never be able to play video games again. Ever.

Why are people saying Steam? I'm assuming it's some sort of trying really hard to be clever rather than that Steam has a rental service.

I don't know what Gamefly is, I'll look it up.

You're worried about sounding like a plant? How about not being a douche and let us decide for ourselves whether a website is bullshit or not.

Also, really? I know Nintendo DS and even PS2 emulators are total shit, but you're saying there's a decent Wii emulator?

The leading Wii emulator works pretty well with major games. And DS and PS2 emulators are far from shit, come out from under your rock.

The website is http://goozex.com

I just remember I was trying to play kingdom hearts less than a year ago because I was wondering what kind of game it actually was and it ran kinda crap, same for ffx-2 (which is an excellent game)

I remember the last time I tried a DS emulator to play the advance wars game the emulator b asically shat itself and then displayed that on my screen. I'll try them out again, I guess it's been a longer time than I really thought.

Because that's what Steam is. A long term rental service.

I'm sensing you don't like National Socialism very much.

I guess National Socialism deleted someone's porn.

I heard the Fighter's Guild is recruiting. Also I heard you can rent many games at TPB and don't return them!

This is weird, I always assumed Hastings was a national chain of stores. For those who don't know, Hastings call themselves an "entertainment superstore" and they've earned that name. They have books, music, games, and DVDs all in one store and let you rent both movies and games. Pretty good selection too. The books section won't have as much as a Barnes and Noble but it's also pretty good and has a good sci-fi/fantasy section. So it was surprising to me talking to people in other parts of the nation who had never heard of it and where there doesn't seem to be anything like it. How weird. And here I thought Texas would have LESS to offer than a lot of the northern states.

The wikipedia page says the company is "Texas based" so maybe it's only in this state. If there's no equivolent in other states I see no reason why they shouldn't expand; there's a good market there.

EDIT: Looks like they are expanding.

Operator of a fast-growing chain of multimedia superstores, Hastings Entertainment, Inc. retails books, music, videos, and computer software through a network of stores predominately located in small towns in the western half of the United States. By the end of the 1990s, Hastings operated 130 stores in 18 states. The company's mix of product categories was the inspiration of Sam Marmaduke, regarded as a pioneer in cross-merchandising. Marmaduke's son John led the chain during the 1990s, when expansion picked up pace, particularly after the company's 1998 initial public offering. Further expansion was expected during the 21st century, with 500 potential sites for additional stores identified by the company's management. In mid-1999 Hastings launched a new site on the Internet to sell a broad selection of multimedia software to the electronic global marketplace.

There's not one Blockbuster near you?

Well, maybe you can find something like Redbox? It's those boxes for trashy people where you can get DVDs and games for 1 or 2 bucks a day.

Gamefly only has a couple of distribution centers unlike netflix, which means for most places it takes a long time to for games to circulate. If you take too long to send something back, they'll think you're trying to keep it and charge you for it. Around christmas season it can take 2 weeks for them to receive a game, and they have a problem with items getting lost or destroyed in the mail so (occasionally) you can get charged for something you haven't received yet. I don't know if they still do that but more recent users said they're only getting 3 games a month.

Another thing, their discs are scratched to hell and sometimes unreadable.

I don't see a ton of stores around anymore. When I feel the urge to rent, I reactivate my online account at Gamefly, or Blockbuster. I'd recommend Blockbuster's online service for a mainstream Wii game like Mario Galaxy. It's cheaper than Gamefly, and allows you to rent movies to. The drawback is that it doesn't offer handheld rentals yet, plus it has long queues for non-mainstream games, if they even exist at all in the system.

Game trading is another option too.
http://gametz.com/ for 1 to 1 trades
http://www.goozex.com/trading/asp/welcome.asp for a points and queue based system.

hastings in wichita falls was pretty decent, it was the only real bookstore in town honestly, and they did have games for rent. But yeah, that's a local chain, they're definitely not national.

I don't think there is such a thing as Blockbuster any more. 1 dollar automated rentals from red box and netflix killed it.

Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2
Fatal Frame 4
No More Heroes 1 & 2 (runs like shit last I checked)
Muramasa: The Demon Blade
...probably some others

It's mostly good for GC emulation
