I see a couple people asking about Isometric art, and not that much helpful information about it. I am not an artist but I enjoy drawing isometric art and like to share my exploration.

480p quality and 20 minutes for something that can be explained in 2.
I guess beggars aren't choosers, so if someone really needs this, it'll be helpful.

Finishing the main part of the stave church. It needs maybe a tower...

How would you proceed...???

YES! I have some cutting edge techniques (from 1995) to create towers and these sorts of things.

I know its gonna be considered taboo but I've been experimenting with a low poly 3D model and using post processing to achieve that classic retro 90s look to the artwork for a pet project by using simple texture maps and then just positioning my camera in a Isometric position within the 3D world space.

I have no use for this. But it is very cozy.

That said its nice to see some guys and girls like doing it more old school and I agree the video is super cozy

Does anyone have any experience making isometric trees and vegetation. I was looking at some 3D prerendered trees and grass, which I actually liked the look of and it sort of fit.

I have no expertise in Bellender to setup a camera and take photos for sprites.

Download Blender. Open/Import the model. Add a light. Add a camera. Select the camera in the outliner hierarchy. Change Lens Type from Perspective to Orthographic in Properties. Hit numpad 5 for orthographic view. Use the numpad directionals to adjust view to your liking. Hit Ctrl+Alt+Numpad 0 to align camera to view. Hit F12 to render an image.

Go to Render > Film and toggle Transparent if you want background culling. Make sure to save to an RGBA png and not an RGB or you lose the transparency.

For Blender there are also several tree generators. The add-on Sapling is free and already included into Blender (you just jeed to activate it). Then slap some some colors/textures on the generated tree and setup camera and render like MF explained it above this post. It's maybe 3 to 5 minutes of work until you have your tree.

There are also paid add-ons that generate trees but Sapling is all you need as a beginner.

Well, looks like the "isometric" name stuck for "isometric-like" projections. I guess I can make my peace with that. E.g. Baldur's Gate is not isometric, but dimetric.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isometric_video_game_graphics

On the other hand, Filmation games on the ZX Spectrum that were the early (maybe earliest on home computers?) pioneers of isometric graphics in games used true isometric projection:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filmation_(game_engine)

EDIT: Shit, nope. Actually Filmation games are dimetric, after all. This is hard...

This comment sums it up quite nicely:

I wish everyone learned to use "axonometric", that's 100% correct for all these games.

Thank goodness this can be applied to all isometric projections when drawing. The skew is slightly different...doesn't matter!
It only matters if you like to use words that have well-defined meaning ;) It helps when talking to people to have a common understanding of the words :)

You are arguing about the how people use the names of different isometric projections under the term isometric. Yes we all get it, there are all sorts of different isometric projections. Case closed.
And please don't spread any more misinformation with wikipedia links.

Ok so I got a basic tree but how do I texture it? Also, the tree looks more like a weed than a tree.

Tutorial

I think this tutorial covers about everything you need. The tree looking life a weed is a combination of your sapling settings & also probably because there is no texture.
Got about halfway through. I can't plug the alpha channel from the texture into the model. That whole node UI view I don't know what its called, but I don't see how to bring it visible.

Just use 2.5D, it's way too popular to say isometric to all kinds of perspective now.

I know its gonna be considered taboo but I've been experimenting with a low poly 3D model and using post processing to achieve that classic retro 90s look to the artwork for a pet project by using simple texture maps and then just positioning my camera

It shouldn't be (taboo). If correct it's "Weak perspective" and can be isometric (too) but it's hardly "positioning" a camera for an apparent reason (more of a toggle).

Maybe realize this and don't make fuss about isometric/dimetric.
