Beginning of the end perhaps! They will hold a gruesome grudge against the Latin Emperor!

Loyalty and Reward 1269-1271

Emperor Hawk celebrates the victory with news of his wife's pregnancy.

01.jpg

Satisfied with the current military affairs, he plans his next move.
The decline of the Ayyubids is no secret, and already the Latin Emperor plots his military campaign to take more land from their sworn enemy of the Crusades.

02.jpg

This time, they set sail for the Duchy of Damietta.

03.jpg

04.jpg

05.jpg

The infidels are caught off guard by the sudden landing and tries to raise enough levy to drive us back.

06.jpg

But we'll never give them that chance. Thousands of them were slaughtered in the coastal battle of Sais.

The joy of victory coupled with another: another son is born.

07.jpg

His name will be Kaidan.

08.jpg

Beaten and humiliated, the Sultan of Ayyubids have no choice but to surrender the duchy.

09.jpg

The usurping of the title follows, for the Emperor wishes to reward his beloved brother for his utmost loyalty...

10.jpg

Prince-Duke Wrex of Damietta is pleased.

Chaos in the Levantine 1271-1273

As the Emperor is about to order the return of his army after a successful campaign on Damietta, news of a succession war in Jerusalem reaches his ear.

01.jpg

Deciding to support the upstart Duke Aubry I in his claims, the Emperor redirected his troops towards Acre.

02.jpg

The battle for Jerusalem begins, this time Christians facing off against each other.

Meanwhile in Constantinople, the future Emperor Shepard II will not tell a lie.
03.jpg

Elsewhere, in Flanders...
04.jpg

Prince Garrus has had enough. His ambitions will not let him stand under the shadow of his Emperor anymore.

05.jpg

Sensing his brother's deep disdain and ambitions for his throne, Emperor Hawke did the unthinkable: he let go of the Duchy. Garrus will now rule over his own realm, cut off from the Latin Empire's protection and unable to meddle so freely in the Latin Succession. Many would argue that the Emperor has made the wrong choice, but it was a choice he made to prevent internal conflicts from happening in the future.

06.jpg

Flanders now stand alone as the Emperor focused on the war for Jerusalem instead which appears more complicated than it first appears.

07.jpg

The Muslim kingdoms did not stand idle, when they see a divided Jerusalem, they invaded - and to make matters worse, King Salvestro of Jerusalem has France by his side. It would appear this conflict would not be resolved so quickly as first thought.

Meanwhile, the Byzantine Emperor decides to mend ties and requests for aid in a Holy War against the crumbling Ayyubid Empire.

08.jpg

The Latin Emperor chuckled and accepted the request. He will observe how this will end and depending on the outcome, perhaps deliver the killing blow to the Byzantine.

As news of the Latin Emperor's acceptance reaches his capital, the Byzantine Army sets forth towards Egypt at full force.

09.jpg

War rages on the coasts of Holy Lands.

10.jpg

As the Latins battled the French forces allied with Jerusalem, the Emperor is beginning to lose his patience.

11.jpg

And things are about to get even more chaotic as the Pope declares a Crusade - this time against Andalusia.

12.jpg

Exhausted and frustrated by the lack of resolution in Jerusalem, the Latin forces withdrew immediately from the Jerusalem conflict.

13.jpg

They have a higher calling.

The Times of Turmoil 1273-1276

00.jpg

00a.jpg

01.jpg

03.jpg

The marriage of the Latin Princess to the Ilkhanate's new Khagan will recreate the alliance once more. Hopefully, they will be of some use this time around.

04.jpg

Mass killings of the infidels of Iberia commences. None shall stand before the pious.

A trouble brewed back home as the Count of Baalbek revolted.
05.jpg

His backers include the Pope himself. What treachery is this?

06.jpg

Calling upon the assassins, the Emperor ordered the mastermind's life to be snuffed out before the flames of the rebellion can spread out of control.

On the third try, they succeeded.
07.jpg

And no one knew who was responsible.

Yet the distractions proved sufficient enough that the Emperor suffered a wound during his Crusades, forcing him to withdraw from action until the wounds have healed.
08.jpg

09.jpg

10.jpg

Elsewhere the Byzantines who were never given any actual aid by the Latin in their Holy War is struggling.

11.jpg

A defeat would be catastrophic and would set off a chain reaction within his Empire.

More plotters in the Empire...
12.jpg

He will not claim the duchy from Wrex...

As the conflict grew worse in Jerusalem, the Emperor sends 9,000 men back into the war.
13.jpg

Already they've withdrawn from the Crusade to deal with the traitorous Count of Damietta.
14.jpg

15.jpg

But that precaution proved necessary as the Count did not resist arrest, he will languish there till the day he dies.

16.jpg

This news does not seem important to me. It will be a long time before we even see Northern Europe ever again.

Jerusalem - victory at last. With their stronghold collapsing, the war should end soon.
17.jpg

More treachery at home...
18.jpg

Abydos, the newly conquered territory of Latin Empire plans to fabricate his claim. How dare he?! The guards were summoned to arrest the errant count but he resisted!

19.jpg

Fool! You will regret this!

Elsewhere, the Papal Crusades were cancelled as the Almohad Sultan was dethroned by a conflict within his own Kingdom!
20.jpg

There doesn't seem to be anything productive we've done in these past conflicts!

The Eternal Foe 1276-1282

The war for the throne of Jerusalem is over, King Aubry takes it and is very grateful to us.

00.jpg

It was a serious mistake to get involved with that conflict. Jerusalem is weakened, and many Christians died for a single man's chance to rule. It is a mistake we do not wish to repeat.

Prince Kaidan begins to understand that his position as the second-born is to respect his elder brother.
02.jpg

09.jpg

His humility also convinces that the Garrus debacle will not happen again.

03.jpg

Wrex, ever the Emperor's faithful brother, delivers him jackpot once more.

04.jpg

05.jpg

With the traitor Count taken care of, the Latin Empire can breathe a little easier now.

While trying to mend ties with the vassal Pope.
06.jpg

Feeling somewhat secure - the Latin Empire will now take more land from the revolting Prince of the Ayyubids.
07.jpg

This time, they aim for the county fo Farama.

08.jpg

The two sworn enemies since the Crusades are at it once more.

The Sicilian King suddenly tries to make use of his alliance and calls for aid.

10.jpg

It is merely a count - why should we pull back to assist him? However, not wanting to lose the prestige, we promise to help.

11.jpg

How badly we underestimated that threat.

12.jpg

Oops.

Elsewhere the situation within the Byzantine Empire is worsening, every single vassal is revolting against their child-Emperor. Adrianopolis, Thessalonica, Cyprus, just to name a few. If only we aren't allied with them against the Ayyubid Wars we'd be able to take advantage of the chaos.

13.jpg

Constantinople, Kaidan, content with his position, began to falter in his studies.

14.jpg

He became slothful.

Prince Shepard, apparent successor to the throne is married to a Duke's daughter.

15.jpg

16.jpg

17.jpg

The war on Farama is a victory for us.

While Princess Ashley is not betrothed to the Golden Horde's apparent heir.
18.jpg

The Byzantine-Ayyubid War is starting to look really stupid at this point, because they've ran out of targets to attack.

19.jpg

All Byzantine forces have been recalled to defend against the revolt, and the only immediate target is the Latin Crusader states of Damietta and Sinai. Even if we fend them off, the Byzantines would still lose the war because they've not occupied a single territory they were after!

Meanwhile a message from Rome creates shockwaves in the Latin Court...
20.jpg

That bastard.

Think like a General, Fight like a Spartan 1281-1282

00.jpg

Emperor Hawke stands alone.

01.jpg

Facing waves and waves of Ayyubid's teleporting sand niggers, he recalled for the first time the tales of Antioch as told by his father.

02.jpg

This is how it feels to face these hordes. They seem to melt into the sands as they are defeated, only to reform and bear upon you once more...

03.jpg

The Byzantines have returned home, leaving the Latins to clean up their mess. But they are too proud to surrender. Fools.

04.jpg

Here they come again.

Constantinople, the Pope receives word of the Emperor's rejection - and declares a war for independence.

05.jpg

06.jpg

The Emperor summons his best to deal with the matter. He will not pull back his army from Egypt.

07.jpg

08.jpg

The plotters were gathered and briefed of their schemes.

09.jpg

To bring down one man and deliver him closer to God.

10.jpg

As the arrows are pulled back by the marksmen, the Emperor himself stands his ground against the Ayyubids assault on Sinai.

11.jpg

11a.jpg

FIRE AT WILL!

The arrow strikes true.
12.jpg

With the death of the Pope, the revolt is over.

13.jpg

A new one gets to wear the funny hat.

14.jpg

Victory at Egypt!

Yet Byzantine lies in shambles.

This Byzantine alliance has taken much and given so little in return.

01.jpg

Only with treachery were we able to stop the Papal revolt in our most testing hours.

But that is not enough.

02.jpg

The Emperor lost his favored son in the war as well, as the Byzantines refused to surrender in shame, the Latin must fight their own battles.

Already the Emperor has planned vengeance and succession on his only son: Prince Kaidan.

03.jpg

He will marry the Kaiser's daughter to ensure an alliance between the Holy Roman and Latin Empire.

A year later, the Byzantines finally cracked.
04.jpg

Broke and facing a revolt led by Doux Lazaros.

05.jpg

Tis only a matter of time before the Emperor is forced to abdicate.

The time has come for the Latins to make their move.
06.jpg

Hawke, ever worried for his mother's health, plead for her to stay strong, at least for another two years. For this will be the most decisive moment for the Latin Empire.

They will reunite the shattered empire, by force.

07.jpg

The revolting Doux and defending Byzantine armies could not stand the charge of 10,000 strong Franks cavalry as well as thousands of mercenaries gathered at Constantinople.

08.jpg

The Byzantines try to raise their own mercenary band, but it backfired.

09.jpg

Almost every corner of the Byzantine Empire is under assault by the Latins.

However, the Empress Dowager could not make it through the year...

10.jpg

22 December 1284, she joined her beloved Husband in the heavens. The Emperor's tears were genuine, whether it was for the loss of his ambition or his mother as the war was abandoned.

Yet he will not surrender, for upon the death of his mother, her claims were inherited to him.

11.jpg

And now, the Byzantine will have a Latin Emperor!

12.jpg

13.jpg

14.jpg

Nearly 80 years ago, Baldwin of Flanders was crowned Emperor of the Latin Empire.

emprah.png

Today Emperor Hawke is now the Emperor of the Latin-Byzantine Empire...
15.jpg

What has been divided into two is now made whole.

One Empire 1286

It's done. The dream we've had for so long, an unified Catholic Byzantine Empire. Ready to defend Christianity from the Eastern Pagans.

Even the revolting Dukes understood they have no chance against the new Emperor and accepts the offer of white peace.

02.jpg

The deposed Emperor is still a threat.

03.jpg

But for now, we can still celebrate. Perhaps the restoration of the Roman Empire can begin soon.

04.jpg

Meanwhile, somewhere in France...

I have no fucking idea what happened to him.

Big empires bring big problems. I expect many rebellious dukes and princes (you switched out of Gavelkind a while back, right?).

For the Imperium!

The Spymaster will remain in Nikaea until the deposed Emperor is deemed no longer a threat. He is just one of the many problems we are about to face in this new, massive empire.

05.jpg

Elsewhere, there seem to be a confusion over the new Emperor's Christianity alignment...
06.jpg

The mastermind of the Byzantine revolt, Duke Lazaros the great demands a better treatment.
07.jpg

Feeling magnanimous in victory, the Emperor accedes to his request and grants him release from his prison.
08.jpg

But he cannot rest easy, for a larger empire will need a larger army to protect it. For this task he must expand the Grey Knights, the famed Elite force of the Crusades.

08a.jpg

With the massive resources and manpower at his disposal, the Emperor spares no expenses.
09.jpg

Prince Kaidan has come of age. Let us hope for the best to the sole inheritor of the Empire...

11.jpg

12.jpg

The Byzantines seem to love their titles so much, we will use these as well.

13.jpg

New, highly trained military officers are ready, most prolific among them all is the leader of the Varangian Guards.
14.jpg

Satisfied with the current state of affairs, the Emperor enjoys the local attractions at the Hippodrome.
15.jpg

Go Blues!
16.jpg

:yeah:

Constantinople is shining bright with a royal wedding thrown in for good measure.
17.jpg

20.jpg

But even the Emperor has limits...
21.jpg

Bulgaria is a de jure Kingdom vassal of Byzantine. It's time to take it by force and install a female ruler over it!

Best Byzantine Ever 1287-1289

The reclaiming of Byzantine territory has begun.
01.jpg

22,000 Grey Knights landed on bordering territory of Bulgaria, facing very little resistance from the King's army, who is currently occupied with a revolt.

In Constantinople, more intrigue abounds.
02.jpg

Ah, what harm would it do? The Emperor has enough daughters.

Elsewhere, the Mongols calls for aid..
03.jpg

I doubt we'll actually participate, but increased relations is good and Bulgaria is not putting up much of a fight.

04.jpg

The young king surrenders and Queen Lidiya rises to the throne.

05.jpg

06.jpg

Orthodox? This isn't acceptable IMO.

07.jpg

:smug:

But the revolting Duchy of Vidin is still at war with the newly crowned Queen.

08.jpg

We will try to help by declaring war on them.

Elsewhere, Duke Iakobos of Alexadria declares Holy War on the revolting Emirate of Cairo.

09.jpg

I support this.

The deposed Prince is threatened by my Spymaster and promises not to plot against me in the future.

10.jpg

While the rest of Byzantine schemes, seemingly out of control of the Emperor.

11.jpg

And finally, Helias Kontostephanos, the famed Marshal of the Latins passed away peacefully at the age of 78. He will be remembered.

12.jpg

The intrigue grew thick, my Spymaster is especially busy.

13.jpg

While the Duke of Vidin is forced to concede a territory to the Emperor.

14.jpg

15.jpg

The captured demesne is transferred to the Queen of Bulgaria, hopefully this will be enough for her to turn the tide of the revolt.

Now, the Grey Knights sets their sight northwards. Hungary's aging King has passed away, and is now ruled by an infant.

16.jpg

A war rages between the successors. It is only right for the Emperor to join in.

Kebab Rising 1290-1291

Once again, Emperor-in-Waiting Kaidan proves his manliness is not just for show, having gained another male heir.

01.jpg

Elsewhere in the Empire, something stirs.

02.jpg

An 18 year old declares himself the King of Serbia. This is not good at all. Already he has joined the independence faction.

03.jpg

The Battle of Hungary is reaching its predictable conclusion. Torn apart by civil wars, the young King cannot hope to hold against the Grey Knights.

However, tragedy struck in Constantinople in the hour of glory.
04.jpg

Wrex, the youngest brother to the Emperor is slain while collecting taxes in Constantinople!

In Hungary, Latin army pushes on to victory.

05.jpg

06.jpg

Another year, another kingdom absorbed into the Imperium.

X-Com: Byzantine Defense

Factions continue to form within the empire, still weaker than the Emperor, yet gaining strength.

01.jpg

This young king of Serbia is an upstart, but I need him for his stewardship for now.

02.jpg

The Emperor also receives an offer of marriage from Georgia.

03.jpg

There's no harm in accepting it, I guess.

Deciding to deal with the treacherous dukes once and for all, the Emperor calls upon Rome to do their duty.
04.jpg

04a.jpg

Excommunication one of the greatest shame for a liege to have. The church disowns them. The stigma around the excommunicated is so high than even an imprisonment won't be disputed by any vassal.

Normally, the person ordering the excommunication would need to have better relations to the Pope, but since the Emperor himself demands it, the Pope-vassal has no choice but to obey.

05.jpg

The Grey Knights marched towards the Duchy of Pest to arrest the errant Duke. Yet when they arrive to deliver judgment the gates were shut and met with hostile reception!

06.jpg

This fool will risk everything to defend himself.

07.jpg

He stands no chance against the might of the Grey Knights.

08.jpg

Elsewhere, the King-Steward of Kebab brought tribute.

In Constantinople, the Emperor is struck dumb by a question from a ward...
09.jpg

Recalling Garrus and Gaider, he grimly states, "Sometimes, even your brother can be an enemy."

10.jpg

The boy was too young to understand.

Elsewhere, Kaidan just can't stop making babies.
11.jpg

This is troublesome.

At least the Duke of Pest surrenders.
