I'm enjoying it so far. Some stupid zoomer tier writing ("Battle Grannies") and purple haired mercs. I ain't never played a JA game before (XCOM4life) so I don't know how it measures up.

-I like it more than NuXCOM, though that's not saying a lot. It does allow the enemies one turn to jump into cover but you can still ambush and stealth kill them if you're good.
-Speaking of stealth, all my mercs suck at it, but it seems worthwhile if you can get it to work.
-Some AI are dumb and rush your spot, others hold back or try to flank if you have them in the open. One battle had all the AR-equipped enemies moving just out of range of my mercs and hammering away with burst attacks while I could barely hit them. Smart.
-You have to actually crouch to use low cover. Cover is 'hard' in that it will totally protect some part of a target, instead of just modifying hit chances. It is also destructable.
-Attacks on smoke- or fog-obscured targets become 'grazes'.
-It does that dumb shit where auto-fire does less damage than single shots, presumably due to inaccuracy. It's more balanced but I hate it. Firing on full auto does not reduce the powder load of your rounds, FFS.
-Hidden accuracy is a good thing I think. Mercs will give you hints if they think it's an easy or hard shot. You never feel like "OMG how did he miss at 90%!!!"
-AI uses overwatch sometimes but not constantly so much that it's annoying.
-Totally open. After you finish the first island, they reveal the bad guys fortress on the map and say have at it.
-I like you can spend extra AP to aim any attack, instead of specific AP costs for aimed and 'snap shots.'
-There are choices, and they appear to have consequences. If you're into that sort of thing.
-Perks require 70, 80, or 90 points in a specific stat. I made a balanced guy who thus qualifies for zero perks.
:rage:
-You can train stats but it takes awhile, and they go up with specific actions.
-Pistols and submachine guns allow you to move and shoot (submachine guns allow three bursts while moving), which enables interesting tactics besides just camping all the time.
-Machine gun emplacements are no joke! Four free automatic overwatch shots every turn, plus the actual turn. Nasty.
-It runs fine, looks okay, and I've had zero crashes or apparent bugs.

Igor is in the game. He's under the 'recruits' tab in A.I.M.

It is another area where it is an obvious downgrade from 2:

It's not early 3D bad, but still, Fox, Igor and Stroid got much worse...
It is not only about particular mercs but about the style as a whole. The ones in JA2 are, i don't wan't to use the word "realistic" but they are certainly drawn in a serious tone. The ones in Prosper Alliance 3 are made in a "funny", cartoony style (Fox is the worst, also ugly - she is supposed to be a Playboy playmate?). This may work for some games but is a drastic change from JA2. It also follows the annoying and not random trend that sequels (of old games) made after 2000 often become more childish as a series progresses.
The overall quality is also mediocre - not terrible, just meh. It could be, perhaps, ok-ish for a different kind of game. It doesn't help here.

I doubt the authors of JA3 even know who this character is supposed to a parody of. And IF they do, instead of a parody they'd just make him a literal nazi who eats babies for breakfast. So much for humour.

Fuck the haters. Jagged Alliance 3 is good. Not perfect, but good - and a good new JA game is a fucking miracle.

And I don't want to hear any shit from anyone who thinks Gus Tarballs is "Oh some old man from Unfinished Business right?"

I got this game as well is far from perfect but i believe os true to the spirit of the old games unlike the garbage that was released before. Sure some things are missing.
-Consciousness bar.
-Limping wounded animations
However the game has also most of the good stuff that was in ja2.

So, is it actually Jagged Alliance gameplay?

That's all that matters. JA2 had brilliant game design.

Just, installing and running it was one of the most horrendous experiences I've ever had with an older game.

Not 100% JA2 but much closer to it than to nuXCOM, which is good enough for me.

Things this have that nuxcom dont:
-bullet simulation[albeit not perfect]
-stances[prone, crouch, standing]
-rudimentary time units[i would like to see higher granularity]
-parts that you can hit[expanded for arms and crotch, which ja2 didnt have]

Overall its a little more complex than nuxcom, though its really unbalanced now, with rifles doing headshots all the time.

So we had two trainwrecks in a single week. JA3, and Xeononauts 2.

I actually don't like the design choices in JA3. It kinda reminds me bad ideas from Silent Storm Sentinels. Either you performed awesomely in first few missions, and you had easy ride. Or you better use cheat engine to have enjoyable game because of weird game decisions.

I'm positively surprised by the combat mechanics. The sound of the machine gun is very satisfying. Stealth is OP so far, I can solo most of the encounters so far (first 2 towns after the intro) with dragunov and a suppressor.
