The Elvira is now complete and packaged for launch. All that remains is to actually do the mission. That'll be a significant undertaking though so it might have to wait.

Strap Yourselves In Codex Year of the Donut
N-body is way more difficult to play with than the simple SOI model KSP has. And I agree that Principia GUI is horrible in general, not just the planner - but I don't think it is possible to make it as simple as the default KSP widget, since that assumes that manouvers are instantaneous, while principia models the burn time.

Principia's planner isn't THAT bad once you get used to it. It took me over a week but it eventually becomes less and less annoying, and very precise. It was hell at first. The biggest issue with the UI I have are the laggy orbit lines. I work around the clutter by turning off predicted path while planning (i.e. using the minimum setting).

It's unfortunate that Principia doesn't allow for correction burns in the planner but that's because the n-body problem doesn't have closed-form solutions.

I once tried making a spaceship with jet engines but it mysteriously stopped working when it left the atmosphere.

New 1.8 update released:

y11Cosjkfda4C47FukIWIkNOgRZ5VbtsMAezFeRb979vpkcLfoBA9g06SwXsHl-F20ArO5Z3BFcNpnx81pgNC91xInMFeZv-7NDQ1kTQ5gKpOb9FJpoz5vJm5N-GsXrXraapLEVI

Hello everyone!

New gadgets are coming from the Research and Development facility, the kind that will get Kerbals screaming: MOAR BOOSTERS!!! A brand new update is here and with it comes better performance, fresh new features, improved visuals, and new parts being added to our players’ creative repertoire!

Kerbal Space Program 1.8: Moar Boosters!!! is an update focused on making the game perform and look better, all while introducing more quality of life features that will improve the overall player experience. We’re also bringing some new solid rocket boosters to the VAB, as well as introducing some exclusive treats for owners of the Breaking Ground Expansion.

Let’s go through some of the update’s highlights below:

Unity Upgrade
Moar Boosters!!! brings an upgrade to the underlying engine of the game to Unity 2019.2, which helped us implement performance and graphics improvements, as well as better rendering performance and a reduction of frame rate stutters. With the new tools that this upgrade provides, we’ll be able to continue refining the game in upcoming updates.

Celestial Body Visual Improvements
Mun, Minmus, Duna, Ike, Eve and Gilly have new high-quality texture maps & graphic shaders, and now look sharper and more realistic! You will also be able to select the celestial bodies’ shader quality in the settings and set them to low (legacy), medium or high, with improvements being visible across the board. These are just part of the first batch of celestial bodies being overhauled, slowly but surely we will continue this endeavor.

g-mPN-i1pBADgxyOYTbMlO0x0RZ7uaPWhqeypYMiSx_CXExqJv6UcwFT3TtUq8pRhrOZqF0jRLz4XMCBq-NbmXnF1LO-tl821jEuxKNX2bJ5eSkbVUxpEpnVT3KGsgDf5xyw9p02

Map Mode improvements
Map mode received some adjustments too! Now you can use docking mode and stage your craft whilst in map mode. The stage display button (formerly stage mode) now serves as a toggle to show and hide the stage stack, whether you’re in flight or map view, and selected map labels will now persist when going back and forth between map and flight mode.

New SRBs!
A range of new solid rocket boosters have been added to the game. From the tiny .625m stack size Mite to the titanic 2.5m wide, 144ton Clydesdale, these new boosters will offer a range of versatile solid-fuel options. Making History owners get an extra bonus here too with the “Pollux” and a 1.875m nose cone to fit on top of it.

Breaking Ground Exclusives
Kerbal Space Program 1.8: Moar Boosters!!! also includes some exclusive content for owners of the Breaking Ground Expansion. A new set of fan blades and shrouds will continue to push the creativity of KSP players even further. Use them to create drones, ducted fan jets, or anything you can imagine.

Improvements to the helicopter blades and the robotic part resource consumption have also been included. The latter will now have better info on consumption and improved options for power-out situations.

And they released it ONE DAY AFTER I FINISHED INSTALLING MY ENTIRE MODLIST. :argh:

One day after I broke down and installed KIS in my current no-restarts, limited-reloads game.

I will break my self-imposed reload rule and roll back to a checkpoint I made just before installing it though. This update looks like a good one, should be worth it. Still I'm up to my eyebrows in Disco right now so maybe KIS has updated by the time I resurface :fabulously optimistic:

Just got back to KSP after a disco-induced hiatus. The new shaders in 1.8.1 look really good. Performance seems better too, not so much in terms of framerate but in terms of noticeably less stuttering. Haven't had long-enough sessions yet to tell if the dreaded garbage collection hiccup is gone, nor explore surface interactions much to see if those work better either. But damn, the Mun looks sweet now.

I've been playing a little with the new patch (A couple of hours on career so I haven't tested really big builds) but most of the perf. increase seems to be, in my experience, in the VAB/SPH and radar screens, usually it'd take a few seconds to switch and now it seems more responsive, there still are some random GC hiccups here and there but less.
Mind you, my PC is shamefully outdated by now (even more with all the mods I normally use) so in decently recent builds it should be much better.

There was more stuff in the Take Two report, including something that touches on KSP.

One, it's sold 3.5 million units. That's... a whole lot, really, several times more than I thought possible. Typically DLC sales are about 10% of base game sales, so if 350,000 players bought Breaking Ground that's a nontrivial amount of money right there, especially as the expansion itself is clearly pretty cheap to make; the robotics are cool and I fucking love it, but they're not terribly difficult or time-consuming to implement.

Two, KSP2 has been delayed to FY2021. Good thing IMO, the original schedule seemed... ambitious. They had a working pre-alpha and all but to get from that to release before April struck me as unrealistic.

In other news, I'm on a mission to Jool. Pics related.

I also want to see if I can make a Duna-capable electric plane using those ducted fans from the 1.8 update. Regular props don't work there, the air is too thin, but rotors made from elevons do, they're just butt ugly.

I did manage to make a Duna-capable tilt-rotor with ducted jets. Only flown it in a simulated mission there though. I did an actual career mission with an older V/STOL rocket plane. Man it makes Duna landings easy, I don't think I'm ever going to use a conventional lander there.

The new shaders look terrific too.

While the game is about to, if not already has received, its final content update (should be soon), wired and ars posted this interesting bit of Kerbal trivia.

https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2021/06/test-out-next-gen-space-tech-in-kerbal-space-program/

It gives publicity to one of my favorite modders and mods. Namely Nertea's near (or far) future [insert tech here] mods. Also hilariously enough...

For Sumontro Sinha, an aerospace engineer and fusion researcher at the Propulsion Research Lab at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, Kerbal is the go-to for testing out new ideas and training new engineers.

“Instead of Powerpoint slides and pages of equations, just make the ship and see how it works,” he says. “If it works in Kerbal, then it has a good chance of working in real life.”

...seems XKCD was right about this one.

Nertea's mods are pretty much pinnacle of Kerbal modding. Just the right mix of great modelling and texturing (though some older mods aren't up to his standards, and maybe we'll be reworked), good portion of science and realism, and balanced with the main game so that it's still fun and interesting (at the cost of realism sometimes). The guy really has good ideas about how to make science fun, and I hope KSP2 takes note of his work.

'

I had the itch to start playing again this past week, but was kinda worried because I knew the patch was coming.

Luckily it's coming TODAY.

And I hope the changes to wheel suspension and friction is actually one that makes it so that I can finally race around on Kerbin instead of trying to not flip, even with a low center of mass.

Is there any mega-mod for people who don't like building spacecrafts? I could never get into Kerbal for long, because I love flying in it, trying to extend flight using other bodies etc etc, but one thing I never liked is building spacecrafts. I just like to have one pre-built (not necessarily optimal, minor tinkering is ok) and fly.
