The Sicilian playthrough of Genghis Khan IV may be finished but I'm not finished with the game just yet.

Genghis Khan: Aoki Ookami to Shiroki Mejika IV (translated as Genghis Khan IV: The Blue Wolf and the White Deer) is a turn-based grand strategy game, and it's the fourth game in the Genghis Khan series (third if you're going by overseas release date given that the 3rd GK Khan is treated as the 2nd game in the West). Released on the PC in 1998 and the PS1 version in 1999, I'll be playing the former.

Unlike Koei's Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Nobunaga's Ambition, where you play as Chinese or Japanese warlords, respectively, in order to unite and take over their respective countries, Genghis Khan has you play as one of the many rulers of Eurasia in order to conquer the known world. Its gameplay is also a unique mix of 4x games like Civilization, yet it is still a grand strategy game at heart.

Unfortunately, this is the last game in the Genghis Khan series, and due to the low sales in comparison to its two mainline series, it was cut short and thus never released in English, unlike the other games.

Through a rather convoluted and brute-force method using Google Translate's feature of directly translating images, thus:

1. I took screenshots of the menus and UI.
2. Used Google Translate's direct image translation.
3. Then I used Photoshop to add text next to the JP text for easy identification.

All that hard work was because I loved Koei's strategy games, especially the historical simulation ones.

1. Here's the iso for Genghis Khan IV. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1sv8evMmWmuF6A5l3qKy2FTeehYGp-e_5/view?usp=sharing

2. Here's the iso for the PUK. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1SyEFWYlMRKh6BX1084RxuOB2XTP-orK0/view?usp=sharing

3. And here's the partial english translation that only works if you only have the OG version installed and not the PUK. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1cf3Kmr2lj_3eQivt0XCvYRfYeAflWwXB/view?usp=sharing

4. If you're playing the PUK, here's a Bugfix provided by Lucomo that restores the unit roster on Scenario 2 caused by errors.

To Install GKIV on your PC:

Mount the img files using a virtual CD-program like Daemon Tools or WinCDEmu and run the autoplay.

After installing, right-click the GK shortcut and set the following settings.

-Set compatibility to Windows XP Service 3.
-Run as Adminstrator
>Keep your appropriate GK Img file mounted on your virtual cd (Vanilla for Vanilla, PUK for PUK) at all times or the game will refuse to run and will prompt you to mount the GKIV disk
-Have fun!

Besides a glitch where the BGM isn't playing, the game surprisingly works well on my Windows 10 PC. Searching the Japanese internet reveals a way to restore the BGM but all the links to the required files are dead, so may as well listen to the soundtrack on youtube or download the soundtrack on my archives on Google Drive.

Genghis Khan IV PC soundtrack:
1. Overture (Ruler select screen)
2. Japanese Strategy
3. East Asian Strategy
4. Mongolian Strategy
5. Mongolian Strategy 2
6. Indian and Southeast Asian Strategy
7. Islamic Strategy
8. Eastern European Strategy
9. Western European Strategy
10. Offensive Battle
11. Defensive Battle
12. Siege Battle
13. Outnumbered Battle (Plays in battles if your ruler or an heir is outnumbered by the enemy)
14. Banquet
15. Love Scene

16. Diplomacy

For those who want to play the game but are Japanese illiterate.

Here's are links to two pdf files I've made. This from the GKIV PUK game manual that I've google translated, it explains how the game works, controls and all the useful information needed to give context.

This one contains translated screenshots of menus for the PS1 port of the game.

A huge compilations of various info and guides I've scoured over the JP internet.

It is the year 1271 and the Mongol Empire has split into four independent Khanates among the descendants of Genghis Khan as a result of infighting between Mongol clans due to succession issues over who gets to be the Great Khan of the empire and cultural conflicts between the Mongol Traditionalists who seek to preserve the old nomadic ways and the Mongols who are influenced by the ways of the settles people.

To the East, Kublai Khan of the Yuan Dynasty seeks conquer the Song Dynasty, a Chinese dynasty that has outlasted it's rivals, to unite China and aspire to fulfill the world conquering ambitions of his grandfather, Genghis Khan.

However, he still faces opposition from his fellow Mongols both from the other Khanates and from within his own nation who oppose his preference of Chinese culture and the settled life.

To the West, the Middle East is even more chaotic than ever as the Mongols, the Islamic nations, Christian nations of Europe battle each other for supremacy while Europe remains as war-torn as always.

FIvno5w.png

Kublai Khan is the ruler of the Yuan Dynasty, composed of the lands of Mongolia and China. He is also the Great Khan of the Mongol Empire but he only has direct influence over his own lands as the other Khanates nominally acknowledge his position while essentially being independent.

An excellent ruler who promoted Chinese culture, which led to rebellions and conflicts from his fellow Mongols who wanted to retain their nomadic ways but he managed to overcome them, at the cost of permanently fragmenting the Mongol Empire between him and his brothers and relatives.

While he managed to unite China by conquering the Song Dynasty and turn the Goryeo dynasty of Korea into a submissive vassal, his invasions of both Japan, Indonesia and Vietnam ended in failure.

The Yuan Dynasty is the most powerful nation in Scenario 2, controlling the 5 cities of Dadu, Karakorum, Huining, Cheng Du and Dunhuang. The culture level of these cities vary from average to low, with only Dadu having a significantly high culture level.

Kublai Khan is a powerful ruler and so is his starting personnel and he has four available male heir placed in 4 cities, that they command the largest number of troops at the start. The Yuan's military roster combines both Mongol and previous Jin Dynasty's roster, so you can recruit both the powerful Mongolian Cavalry alongside cannons.

They are surrounded by enemies by the start of the game: The Song Dynasty of China, the Kamakura Shogunate of Japan, the Goryo Dynasty of Korea, the Pagan Dynasty of Burma and even their fellow Mongols such as the Kipchak Khanate, the Chagatai Khanate and the Ogudei Khanate.

They may get overwhelmed if they decide to attack all at once but the vast advantages they have ensues that'll never happen most of the time.

Being of the one four nations with a campaign goal, they objective is destroy the Song Dynasty while Kublai is alive; accomplishing it increases the stats of Kublai Khan and his powerful officer Bayan.

jKGoiy3.png

The Song Dynasty has outlasted both of it's rivals the Jin Dynasty and the Xi Xia in the face of the Mongol onslaught using superior technology but their government style of favoring civilian officers over the military and a string of incompetent emperors threaten the nation's very survival.

The starting ruler, Emperor Duzong is an amazingly inept emperor. Born to a concubine who failed to abort him using drugs, he was nominated by his equally inept predessesor as emperor because he had no child. He spent most of his rule drinking, hosting expensive parties or constantly having sex with women while he lets his favored corrupt minister Jia Sidao rule and the Yuan Dynasty rampage his nation. He eventually died of overdrinking but by that point, the Song Dynasty was doomed as the Yuan quickly conquered it.

The Song Dynasty now controls the 3 cities of Lin'an, Quanzhou and Xiangyang, all of them having a high culture level. To make up for having the worst starting ruler in the game, the Song start off with many talented officers, military officers such as
Wen Tianxiang, Zhang Shijie and domestic officers such as Jia Sidao and Liu Xiufu.

They are going to need all of those advantages, because they are next to the hostile and much stronger Yuan Dynasty and the ruler has no available heir and whatever heirs born from him have a great chance of having bad to mediocre stats, even with the high level of city culture attempting to recify it.

They are one of the four nations with a campaign goal: Conquer the Yuan controlled cities of Dadu and Cheng Du while Duzong is alive. It increases the stats of Emperor Duzong, Wen Tianxiang, Shijie Zhang and Liu Xiufu.

The Mamluk Sultnate was born when the Mamluks, slave-soldiers trained from birth, took control of Egypt from the weakening Ayyubid Dynasty and established a powerful nation in which they were first to stand up to the powerful Mongol invaders and eventually conquered the Crusader States.

Their starting ruler, Baibars is an excellent ruler and military ruler, arguably better than Saladin when it comes to his accomplishments.

From a miserable slave to a badass who's first notable action is to lead a cavalry force that defeated the 7th crusade and captured their leader, Louis XI of France and later he led the famous Battle of Ain Jalut where he defeated the Mongols. He would later usurp control of the Mamluk Sulttan and become a great ruler, all the while he frequently when to battle and defeated both the Mongols and the Crusaders.

The Mamluk Sultanate controls the two cities of Cairo and Damacus, both of them having the highest culture level in the Middle East, if not the entire game. Baibars is a powerful ruler but aside from Qalawun, his heirs and the few starting officers under his command are mediocre.

The immediate threat is the neighboring Mongol nation of the Ilkhanate but they are also hated by the Kingdoms of England, France, Sicily and the Holy Roman Empire. They are friendly with Mongol nations of the Kipchak Khanate and the Chagatai Khanate.

BbIVK9U.png

The Holy Roman Empire managed to conquer Italy at the cost of German nobility fighting each other and placing puppet emperors at their choosing.

Rudolf I decided to give up Italy in order to focus on expanding the power of the Holy Roman Emperor and bringing some stability in Germany by defeating the rebellious nobles of Austria and Bohemia, all the while the dealing with The Pope. While his success in strengthening imperial stability was mixed, his efforts would eventually form the core that would give rise to the Habsburg Dynasty that would become a dominating force in Europe.

The Holy Roman Empire controls the two cities of Cologne and Genoa, both of them having a good culture level although Genoa is slightly higher than the former. Rudolf I is the most powerful starting ruler in Europe but his current heir and the rest of his officers aside from the less-than-loyal Ottokar are mediocre but another capable heir is soon to be coming-of-age. The HRE lacks siege weapons but can recruit Heavy Infantry, the most powerful infantry unit in the game.

Their enemies are numerous, the Kingdoms of England, France and Sicily, the Republic of Venice and the Mamluk Sultanate hates them so you'll need to be careful with your moves.

JRiwpXP.png

The sudden death of Minamoto no Yoritomo weakened the Minamoto clan, allowing the Hojo clan to take control of Kamakura Shogunate, turning the direct bloodline offspring of Minamoto into puppet rulers. Still, did run the government with competence but they'll soon be facing a Mongol invasion from the Yuan Dynasty that will contribute to it's downfall despite prevailing against the invasion.

The Ruler, Hojo Tokimune is a great example of the Hojo clan's strengths. An experienced martial artist and archer since childhood, he later proves his political skills by killing his brothers to strengthen his own family. Tokimune did not take the Mongol threats lightly, preparing ongoing defenses and warriors that, with the help of the Kamikaze, repelled the Mongol Invasion. However, his efforts would later led to the ruin of the Hojo clan and the Kamakura Shogunate due to these expensive actions and since the Mongol invasion were purely a defensive battle, he was unable to reward the hard-fought samurai with new lands.

The Kamakura Shogunate controlls the 3 cities of Kamakura, Dazaifu and Hiraizumi, all of them having a average-to-low cultural level and they start off with unconnected with no roads connected to them. The ruler, Hojo Tokimune, is a powerful military officer but the rest of his officers are mediocre and only good at domestic tasks. They can recruit the powerful Samurai units, a horse archer unit almost as powerful as the Mongolian cavalry and Warrior Monks who are stronger than Pikemen.

Their enemies are the Mongol Yuan Dynasty of China and the Pagan Dynasty of Burma, the former being a massive threat who will eventually target Japan if the Song Dynasty of China and the Goryo Dynasty of Korea falls to Mongol control.

One of the four nations with a campaign goal, they only need to conquer 1 city outside Japan; it increases the loyalty points of all avaliable officers.

Ordered by the Great Khan Mongke to conquer further east, Hulagu Khan unleashed a massive bloodshed upon the Islamic world; destroying the Abassid Caliphate and the Ayyubid Sultanate but their string of victories were cut short after being defeated by Baibars att he Battle of Ain Jalut.

Hulagu would eventually form the Il-Khanate, a Mongol state in the Middle East although his massacres of Muslims would bring him to conflict with another Mongol state, the Kipchak Khanate who recently converted to Islam. This conflict alongside Kublai's sucession war would fracture the Mongol Empire into 4 independent states.

Abaqa was a eldest son of Hulagu who despite being a bastard, chose him early him because of his superior abilities when compared to his father. He stabilized and formed Il-Khanate state, while repelling attacks from both the Kipchak and Chagatai Khanates. He fought the Mamluk Sultanate but his forces suffered a crushing defeat at the 2nd battle of Homs that led to his death by alcoholism.

The Il-Khanate controls the 3 cities of Tabriz, Nishapur and Baghdad, all of them having a good culture level. The ruler is an excellent officer and so his heir but the rest of officers are mediocre or only good at domestic tasks. They have the roster of both the Islamic and Mongol military roster, they can recruit Camel and Mongol Cavalry alongside Assassin units and Siege Weapons.

They are surrounded by powerful enemies, the Mamluk Sultanate, the Chagatai Khanate, the Kipchak Khanate and the Ogudei Khanate. They are start off allied and friendly with both the Yuan Dynasty and the Eastern Roman Empire.

The Kingdom of England at this point has endured chaos and revolts as a result of it's kings less stellar decision making.

Richard the Lionheart paid more attention to his military efforts than actually running his nation, his predecessor John I managed to improve the administration of his kingdom after his predecessor neglected it but his bad decisions, him losing England's French territories to Philip I of France and over-taxing the nobles to fund his failed campaigns forced them to recognize their rights through the Magna Carta and now the current ruler, Henry III, continues the string of mismanagement by being the Pope's lapdog and continuing his processor's heavy taxation to fund the failed attempts to reconquer Northern France.

But the fortunes of England are about to change due to his capable son, Edward I, a very capable king who survived fighting Baibars in the 7th Crusade but mostly known for crushing Wales and nearly conquered Scotland if weren't for a certain William Wallace and King Robert the Bruce.

The Kingdom of England is situated on an island although large enough to be able to support enough facilities to build and their city of London has a good cultural level. They are hates by their neighbors in the form of the Kingdoms of France and Norway and the Holy Roman Empire.

They can recruit the powerful Crusader Unit and they are the only nation that recruit Longbowmen, the most power foot missile unit although they lack siege units.

Their current ruler, Henry III is weak and only good for finding officers to recruit for the Kingdom but he has the powerful Edward I as his heir and Roger Bacon as an excellent domestic officer.

Being one of the 4 nations with a campaign goal, their objective is to destroy France while Henry III is still alive. Accomplishing this increases the stats of Edward I.

gUo0esZ.png

The Kingdom of France continues it's streak of keeping it's status as a powerful Western European nation despite some heavy lows. Philip II defeated both England and Holy Roman Empire to acquire Northern France. Louis XI further strengthened the authority of the French crown and became a trusted monarch among the European kings for his successful mediation of conflicts between other countries although his later died in a Tunisian prison after a failed 2nd crusade.

Philip III struggled to maintain the authority of the crown and died in a failed military action against the Kingdom of Aragon although he did successfully gain some territory in the process.

The Kingdom of France, in contrast to it's strong start in Scenario 1 is now weakest of the main western European powers due to the starting ruler, Philip III, being mediocre, his improved successor Philip IV, who hasn't yet come of age can't compare to the juggernauts that is Edward I of England and Rudolf I of the HRE and most of the officers are only useful for domestic tasks.

it's neighbors England, HRE and Norway hate France just as much as they hate each other. They still retain a good military unit roster and the city of Paris has a good cultural level but you'll have think your actions well or else you'll get surrounded and overwhelmed.

Founded by Batu Khan, son of Jochi who was Genghis Khan's eldest son and was commander-in-chief in charge of the Mongol conquest of Europe, conquering almost all of the Russian Principalities and devastating both Poland and Hungary. The Kipchak Khanate ruled over the Kipchak state while indirectly ruling the Russians who forced to given tribute and military service to their Mongol overlord.

By the time of Berke Khan, the Khanate was the one of the first Mongol states to become completely converted to Islam, to the point they declared war on the Il-Khanate for their terrible massacres of Muslims in the Middle East.

Mang-Timur, nephew to Berke Khan, was recognized by Kublai as the Khan of the Kipchak but he repaid him by siding with his arch-nemesis Kaidu and Borak of the Chagatai Khanate. He continued his predecessor's policy of warring against the Il-Khanate while being friendly with the Mamluk Sultanate and carefully ruling over his realm by manipulating the Russian princes and encouraging trade by inviting Genoese merchants.

The Kipchak Khanate has the 2 cities of Kiev and Sarai under their control but both of these cities have a low cultural level. Meng-Temur is an excellent military officer but his heir and the rest of his officers average at best. As a Mongol nation, the Kipchak are rather underwhelming but they blessed by the fact the rest of their immediate neighbors are weak. Their military unit roster consists of both Mongol and Eastern Europeans, so they can recruit Mongolian Cavalry alongside the Knights and Catapults.

Their only enemy is the Il-Khanate but they are friendly with the Mamluk Sultanate while they are surrounded by the neutral and weak nations of Poland, Hungary and the Russian Principalities.

ItxX7xm.png

The Chagatai Khanate was founded by Chagatai Khan, second son to Genghis Khan and he ruled over the former Khwarizem Empire and the Qara Khitai lands. Under the rule of the rule of Ogudei Khan, the Khanate was one of the leading nations but fell from grace after being the losing side of the succession conflicts.

Borak supported Kublai during his succession conflicts but later sided with his arch-nemesis Kaidu of the Ogudei Khanate and the Mang-Timur of the Kipchak Khanate due to not wanting to be a puppet ruler for the Yuan. He fought against the Il-Khanate but lost and was later defeated and killed in battle by Kaidu for his failure.

The Chagatai Khanate controls the 2 cities of Almalik and Samarkand, both of them having a good culture level. Borak is an okay military officer by his heir is superior to him in stats and ability while the rest of his officers are average. They can recruit both Islamic and Mongol units.

They are surrounded by enemies, the Yuan Dynasty, the Il-Khanate and Tibet are hostile while they have poor relation with the Ogudei Khanate and only the Mamluk Sultanate are friendly with them.

Founded by the remnants of the Ghurid Sultanate, the Delhi Sultanate ruled Northern India, it's dynasties violently changing just as much as China itself. The current dynasty is the Mamluk Dynasty that are also founded by slave soldiers similar to the Egyptian Mamluks. Balban, the 9th Sultan of the dynasty, strengthened his control over the government by using a network of spies to discover and kill any rebels who opposed him.

Upon his death, his successor was too weak to oppose the nobility who hated his predecessor's strict control and was eventually deposed by Alauddin Khajili, an extremely ruthless and powerful founder of the Khajilii Dynasty who repeatedly defeated the invading Chagatai Khanate but also defeated the Hindu Kingdoms to the north, effectively being ruler of all India. It's no wonder he's called the Indian version of Alexander the Great.

The Delhi Sultanate controls the city of Delhi that has a good cultural level and has the largest building space that allows them to build as many facilities as possible. Their ruler Balban is an excellent domestic and espionage officer while Alauddin is far superior to him in everyway. They are also located in an rather isolated area that's opening for expansion as their nearest neighbors are too far away. The Hindu Dynasties are their only hostile enemy.

8G7znZX.png

The Republic of Venice, successfully manipulated and advantage of the Fourth Crusade to defeat the Eastern Roman Empire, their great rival to gain great economic advantages and expansion and the Mongol Empire's expansion that led to the exposure of East-West made them even more rich. It was during this time that Marco Polo made his first journey to the East.

Their ruler Lorenzo Tiepolo is rather one-note, fighting against Genoa and the other Italian states.

The Republic of Venice remains unchanged from their Scenario 1. Their city of Venice has a high cultural level while all of their officers are purely domestic and espionage officers. Replacing Dandolo is Marco Polo, who's young age ensues he will last longer.

Both the Holy Roman Empire and the Eastern Roman Empire hate them so they have to recruit good military officers as soon as possible.

The Tran Dynasty was born by taking advantage of the civil war plaguing the previous Ly Dynasty, their success allow their rise to power and they were able to have their nephew marry the last king of the Ly who later gave up the throne. In contrast to the Ly Dynasty being controlled by powerful local families which led to civil disorder, they preferred to centralize their control of the kingdom using a system similar to Heian Era Japan where the elder king abdicated the throne to look after the new king.

The ruler, Sungjong become the 2nd King of the Tran Dynasty although his father Taizong was one in charge. With the establishment of the Yuan Dynasty, Kublai Khan demanded that Vietnam become a vassal which Sungjong refused and decided to declare war upon the Mongols. The Mongol expected an easy conquest but little do theh know that a certain Trần Hưng Đạo will show them the horrors of Vietnamse guerilla warfare.

The Tran Dynasty controls the city of Hanoi which has a low cultural level and they can only recruit basic light infantry and shortbowmen. The ruler is nothing special but he has the powerful Trần Hưng Đạo at his command and they have the Champa Rice cultural item that makes sure they will never have to worry about food supply. The Yuan Dynasty is hostile to them but they'll have enough time to deal with them given how they'll need to defeat the Song Dynasty first and the area they are in is open for expansion with the removal of the Khmer Empire.

tnmQqK8.png

The Eastern Roman Empire managed to recover from the disasters of the 4th crusade thanks to the efforts of the Nicaean Empire, a successful successor state founded by Theodoros Laskaris (you may remember him as the officer who has high stats in scenario 1) but unfortunately the damage has been permanently done to both the city and the empire and it doesn't help that dangerous court intrigue that led to the ruin of the empire still continues.

The ruler, Michael VIII, is a cunning bastard who managed to rise in power through his schemes. He became co-emperor of the Nicaean Empire through a coup and after taking Constinatinople from the Latin Empire while most it's army was away, he had the young emperor John IV Laskaris blinded to seize power. He latter used his cunning to defeat the plans of several Popes to regain Constantinople, from his alliance with Genoa and the Il-Khanate to defeating the crusade attempts of Sicilian King Charles I by instigating rebellions.

While he managed to revive and sustain the Eastern Rome Empire, he failed to resolve the ongoing problems that let to it's fall in the first place which would eventually led to the rise of the Ottomans.

The Eastern Roman Empire controls the city of Constintinople, which has the highest culture level in all of Europe. Their ruler Michael VIII is excellent at domestic and espionage and an okay military officer while his heir is only a slightly better at military but mediocre at everything else. The rest of his starting officers are only good at domestics. The Empire is able to recruit powerful Heavy Infantry, the purely defensive and naval Flamethrowers among the typical European units.

They are enemies with the Kingdom of Sicily and Venice while having an alliance with the Il-Khanate and friendly relations with the Russian Principalities and the Kingdom of Norway. While the Mamluk Sultanate isn't automatically hostile to them, they'll eventually become an enemy due to proximity.

kBj7V77.png

The Kingdom of Castile won the Reconquista against the Almohad Caliphate, forcing last remaining Islamic nation on Iberia, The Kingdom of Granada into a tributary state and uniting with the Kingdom of Leon to grow even stronger.

King Alfonso the Wise's title fit him well due to his stellar development of law, science and culture in Spain but as King, he made less than stellar decisions such as his failed attempt to become the Holy Roman Empire that upon his death, a civil war broke out between his sons which led to the decline of the King of Castile and the rise of the Kingdom of Aragon.

The Kingdom of Castle remains unchanged from it's starting conditions in Scenario 1. The city of Toledo has an above average cultural level for a Western European city, surrounded with much land and specialty items but bafflingly unable to initially recruit cavalry units due to have no horse resource item in their lands. All of the officers are excellent at domestic tasks but mediocre in everything else.

The Kingdom of Sicily is the only hostile enemy the kingdom has and they are too far away and surrounded by enemies to matter. The nearby Islamic nations are neutral and divided but you'll still need to watch their movements.

xhRqiyG.png

The Marinid Sultanate was born after violently succeeding the weakened Almohad Caliphate and attempted to reconquer the Iberian territory lost in the Reconquista but was defeated and never again would an Islamic Army would set foot in Iberian again.

The ruler, Abu Yusuf Yaqub solidified the foundation of the Marinid Sultanate by finally putting to a end to the Almohad Caliphate and gave quite the Kingdom of Castile a fight that manages to prolong the lifespan of Muslim presence in Iberia.

The Marinid Sultanate controls the city of Marrakech which has a good cultural level, the ruler is a good domestic and an okay military officer but his heir is dreadfully mediocre. They have neutral relations with everyone and their closest neighbors are rather weak so they can safety build up.

IgWUd4c.png

The Kingdom of Hungary did not have a good time in this period, as they were ravaged by the Mongol invasion of Europe and spent more time reconstructing. As if that's not enough, the nobility, backed by the Pope, rebelled against the crown, sparking off a civil war.

The ruler, Istvan, was given Austria by his father Bela IV but failed to govern the territory due to rebellious of his subjects. He later became King by joining the Pope-backed rebellion against his own father. Upon become King, he suffered the same problems his father had experienced, the nobility once again rebelled from the crown, with help from not only the Pope but also the Holy Roman Empire and Bohemia. He eventually died without an heir and the Hungarian throne was lost to Bohemia.

The Kingdom of Hungary controls the city of Pest, which distressingly still has a low cultural level it had in Scenario 1. They have no enemies nor do they have any allies. The few officers they have including the ruler are painfully mediocre. Their saving grace is that they lack any notable hostile nations, have roads connected so they can trade and the Hungarian military unit roster can recruit both horse archers and the crusader infantry units.

IGlYgv1.png

The Ogudei Clan enjoyed being on the peak due to Ogudei Khan being supreme leader of the Mongol Empire but succession wars removed them from power and they scheme to one day have a member of the clan become the Great Kha once again. Kaidu is essentially the rival and a fierce enemy of Kublai Khan who opposed his settled ways. He forged an alliance witht the Kipchak and Chagatai Khanates against the Yuan, gained allies from Mongol nobles dissatisfied with Kublai's policies and continued to be a thorn to Kublai and his successor until his death from an inconclusive siege at Karakorum.

The Ogudei Khanate resembles the old Mongolian nations of Scenario 1, their city of Emir has an average cultural level in Pastorialism, Weapon and Tactics and low-average-to-low in everything else and can only initially recruit traditional Mongol units unlike the other Mongol nations. Kaidu himself is a powerful ruler but his officers are few and mediocre in skill and he faces powerful enemies in the form of the Yuan and the Ill-Khanate.

The Hindu Dynasties in this era is made up of the Yadava, Hoysala and Later Pandaya Dynasty of India,

The Pandaya Dynasty was an ancient kingdom that started in 6th century BC but fell into obscurity by the 3th Century BC. The Later Pandaya arose in 6th century AD and became a powerful nation in Southern India, frequently fighting with other Indian Dynasties.

The ruler, Maravarman expands the power of the by defeating both the Chola and the Hoysala Dynasties and his reign saw his nation as the center of foreign trade in India. Unfortunately, his final years saw a succession dispute between his two sons, that later led to his death and the civil war which wrecked the empire beyond repair, especially with the Khajli Dynasty of the Delhi Sultanate taking advantage of the chaos to take some of their territory.

The Hindu Dynasties remains unchanged from Scenario 1, their city of Calcutta has a good cultural level and the ruler's good stats makes up for his mediocre officers. Their enemy is the Delhi Sultanate but they are quite far and you'll be able to have enough time to prepare and deal with them.

XieQfCZ.png

Overthrowing the rule of the Almohad Caliphate in Tunis, the Hafsid Dynasty became a prosperous nation due to being an important base on the Mediterranean sea.

The ruler, Mustansir is quite friendly to the Christians despite a Crusade being launched against his nation. With the Eighth crusade suffering from a plague, he managed to sign a peace treaty favorable to them that grants the Christians trade rights and guaranteed residence for monks and priests in the city of Tunis. With this, his reign is the golden age for the Hafsids.

The Hafsid Dynasty is similar to the Marinid Sultanate but weaker as while the ruler is an excellent miliitary officer, he's old and lacks an heir the rest of his officers are only good at domestic tasks. At least they have neutral relations with everyone else, with only France as an enemy but they are too far away to actually matter.

aogTG5B.png

The Kingdom of Norway by this point in history is only known for losing the Isle of Man to Scotland and moving the capital from Bergen to Oslo due to interference of Denmark and Sweden.

The ruler, Magnus IV, improved the Kingdom of Norway by moving legislative power from the provinces to the central government and enacted various laws that were influential for the country for the next four hundred years.

The Kingdom of Norway remains unchanged. The city of Oslo is of low-average cultural level, the ruler and his officers are mediocre in stats but skilled at naval battles, their isolated location provides safety from their neighbors and they can recruit the powerful vikings units, strong infantry units that are also stronger in sea battles.

They are friends with the Eastern Roman Empire and the Russian Principalities but are hated by the Kingdoms of England and France.

JdhxbrQ.png

Previously, the Holy Roman Empire managed to conquer Italy but Charles I rebelled against German rule and sided with the Pope. A man of great ambitions, his attempts to create a empire were mixed at best, he managed to unite Italy but his attempts to expand to Tunis and the Eastern Roman Empire ended in failure and his heavy handed rule led to both the Pope and people of Sicily undermining his rule.
Eventually, he lost Sicily to the Kingdom of Aragon of Spain and died before he could raise an army to recover it.

The Kingdom of Sicily receives a great upgrade due to replacing the city of Palermo with Naples, giving them the ability to finally recruit cavalry units like Knights alongside their Viking units and more land to construct buildings. Both the ruler and his heir are nothing special though and while they are allied with France, they are hated by the Eastern Roman Empire, the Mamluk Sultanate, the Holy Roman Empire and the Kingdom of Castile.

Qz8Ohx9.png

The Russian Principalities is represented by Novgorod. The Russian Principalities are essentially forced to be vassals to the Kipchak Khanate, being required to lay tribute and provide military forces for their Mongol Overlords. Still, that doesn't stop the various princes from fighting each other for supremacy.

The ruler, Yaroslav III is the prince of Tver who later became a Grand Prince after accquiring the princely seat of Novgorod. He was also the regent to the young prince Daniel, son of Alexander Nevsky and the boy would later become ruler of the Principality of Moscow which would eventually unite Russia.

The Russian Principalities suffered a blow from losing Kiev to the Kipchak Khanate, their city of Novgorod has a low cultural level and they can't recruit cavalry units at the start. They also start off with no roads connected to the other country and they are also next to the powerful Kipchak Khanate. Their only saving grace is that the ruler and his officer are slightly good and they can recruit catapult units.

tMzWC42.png

Just like with their neighbor Hungary, the Kingdom of Poland experiences hard times, from the Holy Roman Empire attempting to take western parts of Poland due to siding with the Pope to being ravaged by the Mongol invasion at the Battle of Legnica.

The starting ruler, King Bolesaw V had a hard life. His father was assassinated and his right to the Polish throne was renounced for his safety. He later become King but had to rebuild Poland after being ravaged by the Mongols and deal with country being constantly attacked by other countries including the Mongols.

The Kingdom of Poland is quite possibly the worst nation in Europe as they have an immense disadvantage at the start. Their city of Krakov has the lowest possible culture level and starts off with no roads connected to the other nations. The ruler is old, has no heir at the start and he and his officers are mediocre and they can't initially can't recruit cavalry units at the start. They are also near powerful the Kipchak Khanate.

Their only advantage is that they have neutral relations with every nations and they can recruit Heavy Infantry and Catapults.

Exw2Eq2.png

Tibet at this point is a loyal vassal to the Yuan Dynasty and contributed to nation in religious and cultural duties. The ruler, Paspa is a nephew to Sakya Pandita and is chosen by Kublai himself as the successor. He later served as an imperial and cultural advisor to the Emperor himself.

Tibet remains unchanged from Scenario 1 and also unremarkable as well. the ruler and his officers are excellent at domestic and espionage tasks but poor military stats and skills and the city of Llhasa has overall low-average cultural level, can only recruit basic units due to the lac, of horse resource. They have a friendly relationship with the Yuan Dynasty and neutral relations with everyone else.

EyLAuhl.png

The Goryeo Dynasty of Korea did not have a good time as it was invaded six times and had to accept being a vassal state, all the while their shores are being constantly raided by Japanese pirates.

Their ruler, King Wonjong willing surrendered to the Mongols in order to spare the country from further devastation and to restore the authority of the crown with their help. His attempts to disband the Sambyeolcho, an anti-Mongol military unit only led to their rebellion and a fierce resistance against the Mongols that only ended after the combined forces of the Yuan and the Goryo defeated them.

The Goryo Dynasty retains it's position as one of the worst nations in Asia and it's starting situation has gotten worse than before. Their city of Gyeseong has a low cultural level and initially can't recruit cavalry units. The ruler starts off with no heir and he and the few officers he has are mediocre; with all that and being between two powerful and hostile nations in the form of the Yuan Dynasty and the Kamakura Shogunate. Their only saving grace is only one good military officer in the form of Kim Tong-Jeong, one of rebel leaders of the anti-Mongol unit.

CkMETc9.png

Pagan The Kingdom of Pagan is a Burmese Kingdom in Southeast Asia. It later adopted Buddhism and devoted themselves to the construction of many temples, which became a massive problem for the kingdom when these 10'000 temples where given tax-exemption status. They met their end when the kingdom made the mistake to refuse to gave the Yuan Dynasty tribute and launched an invasion that led to collapse of their government.

The ruler, Narathihapate is an incompetent king who continued his predecessors' policy of wasting money on building temples but added forced labor to do it. He twice refused the Yuan Dynasty's demand for vassalage and quickly fled his kingdom when the Mongols finally managed to overcome the difficulties of Burma's tropical heat. He later accepted becoming a Mongol vassal in exchange for their assistance to return to power but he was killed by one of his sons on his way back to the capital.

They are a weaker replacement to the Ankorian Empire of Scenario 1, their city of Pagan having low cultural level, the ruler and his officers are mediocre and have misfortunate of having the Yuan Dynasty as an enemy. Their only saving grace is their recruitment of Elephant Cavalry and their surrounding area is open for expansion.

Pick a faction everyone. (Except Tibet because that's quite boring as hell)

Excellent. I will copy my pick from the old thread for visibility.

I would vote for the HRE again but since we were just in Europe, I'm gonna go with Japan instead. Relatively protected, one will have to clean up the mess in the West.

Ah, and maybe add a "(PC)" to the title. With the fixed scenario file, it's not a problem and the misleading, unsexy console pictures of the OP could be off-putting for users, considering this is basically a PC forum. Add to that, Koei was (and still is, imo) a PC company. So any reference to console ports is always a bit...meh.

I appreciate how realistic (and White) everyone looks. Normally the gooks love to shit up history with their anime.

I vote for either England or Delhi. England seems like it has an interesting dynamic with starting with a weak ruler and an incentive to conquer early to improve the heir, as well as unique archers. Delhi seems like it has potential for making a minmaxed uber city with an excellent domestic ruler and largest buildable area.

Yeah I voted for Wyrmlordia in the previous thread as well because it's small but not as contained as Tibet and on the asian side of the world so we'd see a different batch of cultural items.

Seeing as there hasn't been a unanimous decision yet, I took the time making a good description of the gameplay for new posters who hasn't followed my previous playthrough.

BhED7PA.jpg

Genghis Khan IV takes place in a 2D isometric map of Eurasia, which gives it quite the epic feel alongside playing actual rulers of countries when compared to its more popular brothers Nobunaga's Ambition and Romance of the Three Kingdoms, where you unite Japan or China as a local warlord.

Also, unlike its brothers, everything except the battles takes place on the world map. You can see cities and units moving, doing stuff like building facilities or fighting each other.

Just like with its brethren, your goal is to play as a ruler and unite Japan by managing your city and conquering your foes using units. There are four resources: gold, food, troops, and your officers. Gold is required for almost every action a county takes, from building facilities to creating army units to paying the wages of its officers. Food is required for armies to function and for your city to sustain its troops. Troops are required to build up your armies and protect your cities during sieges. Your officers are required to execute every task in the game.

Officers

ptXB05e.jpg

kJcBeUw.jpg

hBanwuT.jpg

The game contains 530 officers, which may seem small given the setting until it includes the generic, randomly generated officers. Each officer has their own stats and skills. Stats range from 1 to 100, and each of these stats governs how well an officer performs a task. These are the three stats:

Politics (POL): Determines how well an officer performs domestic tasks like building facilities and recruiting officers.

War (WAR): Determines the combat power of an officer when commanding an army unit

Intelligence (INT): determines the effectiveness of performing espionage tasks, confuses tactics in battle, and resists enemy espionage and confuses tactics.

Combat aptitude affects how well an officer can command certain military units. An officer with a high WAR stat but a low aptitude rating may lose to an officer with a mediocre WAR stat but a high aptitude rating. It is divided into four categories: infantry, archers, cavalry, and naval.

There are also six skills divided into two categories: domestic and warfare.

Domestic skills

-The farming skill allows an officer to build farms and herds quicker.
-The commerce skill allows an officer to build weapon or craft workshops quicker and allows for better deals when trading food, gold, or specialty products.
-The construction skill allows an officer to build sawmills, barracks, and roads quicker and to quickly fortify cities to raise their defense.
-The culture skill allows an officer to build universities, art studios, and hospitals quicker and increases the cultural level when trading.
-The diplomacy skill increases the chances of successful diplomatic negotiations.
The recruit skill increases the success of recruiting officers to join you.

Warfare skills

-The Mobility skill increases the movement of a military unit under the officer's command. It doesn't work in naval battles, though.
-The Charge skill increases the effectiveness of the Charge attack command when using infantry, melee cavalry, and horse archers.
-The Rapid Fire skill allows an officer's archer or horse archer unit to fire twice in a single ranged attack.
-The Arson skill allows an officer's units to use a fire attack on the enemy. Melee cavalry will be able to set fire on an enemy unit just like infantry units, while Archer and Horse Archer will be able to fire flaming arrows that have a chance of causing confusion or setting an enemy unit on fire.
-The Castle Attack skill not only increases the damage done to an enemy gate but also allows infantry units to climb over the enemy castle's walls during siege battles.
-The Ambush skill allows an officer's infantry units to hide and become invisible to the enemy. If an enemy unit moves close to the hidden unit, it will automatically attack and forcibly stop a unit's turn without suffering counter damage while it has a chance of inflicting confusion on the target.

Strategy options.

8jqLY6A.jpg

Cities

Similar to the Civilization series, countries are represented by cities, which are where resources are gathered and units are created. It projects an area of control where facilities can be built, and any specialty goods in the Area of Control (AOE) are now owned by the city. It's AOE can be expanded even further by having the builder unit fortify the city to not only raise it's defense level but also increase the size of the city. If two cities and their AOE overlap, then the first city that expanded keeps the territory until its defense level is reduced, and the second city claims the territory, and vice versa.

The facilities built on the AOE contribute to the income generated by the city, with certain cities earning much more gold than others, and it also increases the cultural level of the city. The higher the cities' respective cultural levels, the more a facility will grow and produce even more income, further increasing the city's cultural level.

Units.

N9LyNHb.jpg

Unlike the Civilization series, units are not a single generic unit but a group of citizens or soldiers commanded by an officer.

-Armies can attack other armies, units, and cities.
-Builder units can build facilities, roads, and fortify cities.
-Spies perform espionage tasks against other cities.
-Trade units can trade with a country's other cities or countries' cities.
-Transport units supply gold and food to cities and army units.
-Diplomat units perform negotiations with other countries.
-Moving units are officers that can move faster than any other unit to transfer from city to city
-Settler units require gold, food, and half their home city's size to move to an empty location and build a new city.

A player can disband a unit and return any gold and food held by the unit. If the player does not want to be bogged down by the monotony of managing every single unit, there's a handy auto mechanic called delegation, where you can order a unit to repeatedly perform a task or set coordinates for a city, location, or unit that they will follow.

6u1AOnU.jpg

Culture.

Genghis Khan IV's main theme is "Cultural Exchange and Development" and how the concept of culture ties into the gameplay.

The first is the city's culture level, which has a wide effect on the city's facilities, its units, and the officers who live in them. A high-cultured city like Cairo will be able to recruit powerful generic officers, and their army units have high attack power, but a low-cultured city like Krakov means they'll barely be able to find a mediocre officer while their armies are underpowered.

Here are the ten various cultural levels: (Note: This information is gained from articles and blogs I've searched on the internet, and I can't confirm if these effects are true.)

-Farming culture increases the income gained from farms and affects the POL status of generic officers and heirs and the chances of getting the agriculture skill.

-Herding culture increases the income gained from herds and affects the cavalry aptitude of generic officers and heirs, if it weren't bugged in the PC version. Instead, it affects the archer's aptitude.

-Weapons culture increases the attack power of military units and affects the cavalry aptitude of generic officers and heirs instead of archers due to the above bug.

-Tactics culture increases the morale of military units, affects the WAR stats of generic officers and heirs, and increases the chances of getting combat skills.

-Naval culture decreases the chances of units sinking in open seas and increases the movement of military units when they are in ship battles. It also affects the naval aptitude of generic officers and heirs.

-Architecture culture increases the resistance of facilities against natural disasters like earthquakes and typhoons and decreases build time when constructing facilities. It also affects the chances of generic officers and heirs getting the construction skill.

-Academic culture affects all of the stats and combat aptitudes of generic officers and heirs, as well as the chances of gaining some or all officer skills.

-Arts culture reduces the chances of officer loyalty lowering and affects the chances of generic officers and heirs gaining the culture skill.

-Medicine culture increases the lifespan of officers living in the city and the fertility of wives so that they can get pregnant easily.

-Craft culture increases the production of specialty goods and affects the chances of generic officers and heirs gaining the arson skill.

There are three ways to raise the cultural level of a city.

1. Building facilities will raise a city's cultural level, and if a certain culture reaches a certain threshold, the facility will level up, which will increase a city's cultural level even further. However, this is dependent on how many building slots the city has, and if a certain cultural level is below 20, then you can build facilities.

2. Through acquiring cultural items. Cultural items are held by a country and will permanently increase the cultural level of the starting cities. If a country acquires a cultural item through conquest or reaching a high enough cultural level, every city currently owned by the country will have its levels raised depending on the item.

3. Through trade units. Trade units increase every cultural level of both their home city and the target city by 1 or 2 if the officer has the culture skill when it trades with the target city and when it returns to their home city. If both cities' cultural levels are evenly matched, then no further increases occur. To trade, cities must be directly connected by roads, or the ports under their control must be directly connected to the city. For the cities of other countries, you must first be allied to them before you can even trade.

The second is a country's cultural sphere. The game divides the various cultural spheres of countries into seven: Mongolian, East Asian, Japanese, Indian and Southeast Asian, Islamic, Eastern European, and Western European.

These divisions have various effects that will cause complications in a country's quest to conquer the world. Officers of different nationalities will find it difficult to raise their loyalties if the ruler's nationality is different from theirs. Certain military units must be commanded by an officer of a specific culture, or their attack power is halved. If a ruler dies, a foreign city under their control may rebel and become independent.

The Royal Family

qvB8cAK.jpg

Unique to Genghis Khan IV are the ruler, the line of succession, and the feast mechanic. If a king dies without an heir, royal family members, or a son-in-law, the game ends. To prevent this, the King must perform a feast mechanic in which the King invites his wife or wives and selected officers in his city. If you talk to his officers, he can raise their loyalty. If he talks with his wife, he must raise her affection meter in order to have sex with her and be pregnant with a child.

If the child is male, You'll have to wait for 8 in-game years for him to come of age and be a useful officer, and their stats and skills depend on the stats and skills of the ruler, the wife, and the culture of the city they are born in. If the child is female, she is either used to forging an alliance between countries with a marriage pact or being married to one of your officers to become a son-in-law. Aside from being able candidates to secure the royal line, they can command larger amounts of troops when compared to ordinary officers. Ordinary officers can only command an army unit with five units that only have 600 men. Royal relatives and son-in-law heirs can command 5 units made up of 800 men, while the King and his sons can command 5 units made up of 1000 men.

Armies

Alongside domestic and cultural factors, army units are used to defeat the armies of other countries and conquer their cities. Armies require an officer, troops to create military units, gold to pay for the cost of creating military units, and food to be stocked. Each army commands five military units, divided into 1st–5th units. The first unit is the CO unit, and if it dies, the army is defeated and it loses the battle. Military units are divided into 5 categories: infantry, archers, melee cavalry, horse archers, and siege weapons.

Infantry units are able to perform a combination attack on an enemy unit, can set fires without the need for the arson skill, can climb castle walls if the officer in command has the castle attack skill, and can break through city gates faster and destroy castles better than any other unit.

Archers can fire bow attacks at range but are weak in melee combat. They can use fire arrows if the officer in command has the arson skill.

The melee cavalry are the strongest physical attack units, and they have the highest movement. They can perform charge attacks that deal higher damage while attacking, but they are at risk of going berserk and randomly attacking both ally and enemy units. They also inflicted reduced damage on city gates and castles.

xW7xIcu.jpg

ETdk1lr.jpg

A field battle is initiated when an army unit attacks another unit. If there are units next to the targeted unit, these units will act as reinforcements for either the targeted unit or the aggressor, depending on their affiliation.
A siege battle is initiated when an army unit attacks a city, and the same rules apply to field battles when it comes to reinforcements. A naval battle is initiated when a military unit fights in the seas or there's a sufficient body of water to go around. Naval battles are different when compared to both field and siege battle in which units in water must rely on their naval aptitude for damage, their home city's naval culture for max unit movement. This means that an officer with high cavalry aptitude but poor naval aptitude who commands a mostly melee cavalry will be at a severe disadvantage.

The game goes to a separate battle screen where the battlefield is determined by the terrain the target unit is on. The target unit is placed in the center, while the positions of the aggressor and reinforcement units vary depending on which side they are positioned on.

The battle ends if:

1. If 10 turns pass, it's a draw.
2. If CO unit of either the attacking unit or defending unit dies, regardless of how many units are left,
3. The Attacker or Defending CO unit retreats.
4. Reduce the defender's castle to 0.

The losing side may have all of its officers taken prisoner or reduced to moving units.

And that's the end of that short refresher. If you want a more detailed explanation, please download the PC version's manual, which I've translated using Google Translate and made into a PDF file.

One last throw of the dice.

Factions chosen by the few recurring posters here: Delhi Sultanate, Hindu Dynasties, Pagan (Burma), Tran Dynasty (Vietnam) and the Kamakura Shogunate (Japan).

Please decide from which of these factions should I play as.

Sorry about the long delay. Besides waiting for the final vote, I was busy playing another Koei game and made another google translate based translation of the menus, the tutorial and it's in-game glossary. It just needs more polish before I get it ready.

Alright, let's get started. Since this is one of the four factions with an actual objective, the Kamakura Shogunate gets an intro before the game starts.

This is basically one of the reasons the Kamakura Shogunate fell, besides the massive costs of preparing against the Mongol invasion.

If this was Scenario 1, he'd be right but this is Scenario 2, where the Yuan Dynasty reigns supreme.

Their objective? Conquer 1 foreign city and the loyalty of all existing officers is increasing. Rather lame when the other 3 countries has their best officers getting permanent stat increases. Oh well, it least there's some incentive.

Genghis Khan IV PC OST - Japanese Strategy

Welcome to the land of the rising sun. It's been a hundred years since Minamoto Yoritomo established the Kamakura shogunate and united the land, but the deadly political intrigue and rivalry between the members of the ruling Hojo clan and various samurai clans ensure that it is never truly peaceful.

The Kamakura Shogunate is ruled by the current ruler, Hojo Tokimune, and so far he has stayed on top through skillful political intrigue against his rival family members, but he'll be put to the test by a powerful force to the west.

wfMZ7vX.png

And that force is the powerful Yuan dynasty of China, a powerful Mongol state ruled by Kublai Khan. Even though the Mongol Empire has since been fractured into four separate states, the Yuan are arguably the most powerful of the four, and they are keen on expanding their reach into Southeast Asia by forcibly sending their envoys to other countries to make a choice: submit and become a vassal or risk their mighty armies conquering their lands.

AD3PZW2.png

GK9lesY.png

These two nations are currently dealing with the Yuan threat but are showing cracks. The Song Dynasty has long resisted the Mongols, but while their cities of Linan and Quanzhou are highly cultured and their armies and officers are mighty, they are led by an idiotic emperor. The kingdom of Goryo fares even worse; their nation is divided between pro-Yuan and anti-Yuan factions, and constant Mongol invasions have left their city of Gaeseong and their armies weak in both culture and military. The conquest of either of these countries brings the threat of the Yuan closer to Japan.

cbI1pMT.png

fPCvNQB.png

2si9Q9r.png

The Kamakura Shogunate itself controls the three cities of Kamakura, Hiraizumi, and Dazaifu, each having a rather unimpressive cultural level where their highest is average while the rest are low to the point where I can't build the proper facilities to improve them, and they start off with no roads connecting them. Japan itself doesn't have enough land for me to even build enough facilities to raise the cultural level. Still, each of these cities can recruit two Japanese culture exculsive units, the Samurai and the Warrior monks. The former is a powerful Horse Archer unit that's second only to the mighty Mongolian Cavalry, and later is a powerful infantry unit second to the Western Heavy Infantry unit.

They also start up with two cultural items:

Tv4Su90.png

O4uxzkl.png

The ruler, Hojo Tokimune, is an excellent officer skilled in both military and domestic affairs, while most of his officers are rather average, except for a few good ones.

Fd1lGLU.png

zSnxiAI.png

toiXu7V.png

First order of business: Kamakura is in the business of building roads and a port to connect to the other cities, constructing farms to make it a supplier of food and strengthen the city's defenses to expand it's Area of Influence to provide further building slots, Daizafu will be both an excellent staging point for an invasion of mainland asia and the first target would be invaders, so build I both academies to increase the chances of recruiting good officers and villages to quickly draft troops and Hiraizumi will focusing on building Sawmill to raise Architure culture strengthen facility resistance to natural disasters like earthquakes and typhoons, which will be common in Japan and will pass it to the other cities once the roads are built and trade begins.

9bF10rz.png

While currently in the process of domestically improving Japan, a Song Dynasty army decides to invade Dazaifu and proceeds to attack a builder unit. Great, as if the Kamakura needed more enemies. Thankfully, one of the officers finished building, so I had them return to the city to organize an army and attack next turn.

Genghis Khan IV PC OST -Army Attack

I made the mistake of not raising the city's defenses first, and thus it is unable to recruit cavalry due to the AOE not reaching the horse resource, and I can only organize an army made up of warrior monks. I decide to let the enemy come to me so that I can use the surround ability of the infantry to destroy their units, and it's good that I did because, thanks to the Song's high weapon culture, they have a higher atk power than normal, and a mediocre officer is able to deal heavy damage despite my officer having a higher war stat. The officer is defeated but refuses to join, so I let him go. I need to form an alliance with the Song for trade purposes.

MI6KVg9.png

A few turns later, it's the Koreans' turn to attack Daizaifu, with two Song armies en route to attack. Cone on you guys, Japan was minding it's own business at this time period.

I engage in a battle with the Korean fleet, starting off with a confused tactic that immobilized most of their units and left them utterly defenseless. The officer I captured quickly agreed to join, and he has good stats and has the recruit skill. Later, the first Song army lands on the shores of Kyushu, where I have two armies ready to surround him. The fact that it's commanded by a domestic officer who's weak at commanding armies and that my war officer has Samurai cavalry shows you the outcome of the battle. The second Song army fares no better, although I was lucky that my berserked Samurai units (due to using the Charge attack) attacked the CO unit instead of each other. The first officer goes free while the second joins. It's nice to have free officers while building up.

As the Song dynasty keeps sending more units to attack, I'm tempted to just conquer them outright, but it risks me fighting the Yuan too early. Even worse is that Daizufu has run out of money, which limits the number of troops that an army has. Thankfully, Tokimune has finished connecting the roads, and I'm ready to muster a royal army to destroy them next turn.

Meanwhile, an event plays where Tokimune's son is training in the art of the sword.

The Song has made no moves to directly attack the city of Dazaifu, giving me the chance to get rid of them on the battlefield. The first Song army falls to the might of the Samurai thanks to the ruler's Rapidfire skill, which increases the number of arrows fired. As always, I let the officer go because weakening the Song and letting the Yuan wipe them out easily is not in my best interest.

JYmU2jx.png

uaTojMt.png

LQyZjNa.png

With the Song army in the seas, Tokimune is forced to confront them in a navy battle despite having a low navy rank, but his superior stats easily destroy the Song armies, with one captured officer convinced to join.

Meanwhile in Eurasia, the Egyptian Mamluks conquer Baghdad from the Il-Khanate, gaining control of a high-culture city and a base for an invasion of Persian lands, while the Yuan Dynasty has finally begun its invasion of the Song, attacking the city of Xiangyang.

Genghis Khan IV PC OST -Banquet

Before the Song gets snuffed by the Yuan, I'm finally sending a diplomat to forge an alliance. Also, all the recently defected Chinese officers will be sent to Kamakura for a banquet to show their loyalty.

Genghis Khan IV PC OST - Diplomacy

Unfortunately, a few turns later, the Song city of Xiangyang is conquered by the Yuan before the diplomat reaches the Song capital of Linan. A turn later, the diplomat reaches the court of the Song Emperor. I offer a cultural item for an alliance, and he rejects it. That's it. This and the Song are still sending armies at me despite the Mongols at their throats. I'm conquering their capital before the Yuan gets to it first.

It's one of the reasons I went with Japan...even if the objective is "on the way", so to speak.

*West. Way too early for "a powerful force to the East".

As it should be. They have lost the Mandate of Heaven and it should, nay, will be granted to Japan instead.

By the way, I hope you will colonize civilize the barbarians to the North.

Alas. The big problem the Kamakura Shogunate has is that only Hojo Tokimune (ruler) and Seinaga Takezaki (the main officer at Dazaifu) are the only competent officers capable of fighting the mainland Song and Mongols. I'd wish to build up more but I've changed my mind regarding that stance as you'll see in the next chapter.

The last chapter had the Kamakura Shogunate's preparations to prepare against the Yuan Dynasty seriously hampered by the Song Dynasty's unprovoked attacks in spite of being invaded by the Mongols.

ODx5IQG.png

Rather than risk attacking the Song Capital city of Linan only to be on the direct path to the Mongols, I may as well attack the Korean city of Gaesong and make it the first frontline base against the Yuan while the Song will be a helpful roadblock until I can finally decide to conquer them outright.

First, I have to deal with the Song invaders repeated attacks on the city of Dazaifu. Hojo Tokimune once again rides out to deal with the pests. Usually, if the enemy AI knows that their officer is heavily outmatched, they will immediately retreat rather than fight. However, if the enemy AI has reinforcements, they are a lot more willing to directly attack, despite the heavy stat differences. This happened when I attacked two Song armies that were next to each other, but ultimately I destroyed the Song armies.

Next turn, the Korean Goryo dynasty decides to attack once again and sacks a farm tile. They are clearly asking for an early Japanese colonization. The man they sent is Kim Teong-Jeong, the
leader of the Sambyeolcho and has a useful ambush tactic. He's a good military officer, but Tokimune easily destroys him in battle since the Koreans only have basic units like light infantry and shortbowmen. He quickly changes sides; he'll be a very useful officer once I occupy Goryo.

PWl6xFo.png

The Song finally ceased their attacks, and I can finally prepare for the invasion of Goryo. Tokimune returns to Kamakura to replenish and replace some of his samurai with warrior monks since he has the castle attack skill that lets his infantry climb over walls. The quicker the conquest, the better.

0wB0Whp.png

5mcAhU2.png

Alas, both the Song and Goryo resume their attacks and send armies once again to Dazaifu, but I'm not worried since the city is well-stocked this time. A few turns later, Tokimune has entered the Kprean peninsula and is preparing to besiege Gaesong. The capital has an army as reinforcement, but their military is laughable and will be easily brushed aside.

ibjLbtP.png

M1AqkU0.png

King Wonjong in charge of the garrison and the reinforcement officer protecting the city are mediocre in the war stats, while the former is of low intelligence, allowing me to successfully confuse his troops. While Tokimune and his Samurai destroy the reinforcement unit and breakthrough the gates, the Warrior Monks hide away from plain sight and climb the castle walls to keep the garrison force occupied and prevent them from attacking the Samurai. With the overwhelming power of Tokimune and his samurai, Gaesong falls to the Kamakura Shogunate. Some of its officers willingly join with their Japanese overlords, while the rest, including the former king, are let go; they don't deserve a quick death.

I've also acquired two of their cultural items. The Korean Ginseng not only increases medical culture but it increases the chances of getting the queen pregnant (basically Viagra) while the Tripitaka Koreana are a collection of Buddhist scriptured carved into wooden print blocks.

Also, the Kamakura shogunate's objective has been completed, as the cutscene appears. As much as I'd like to be the Japanese version of Genghis, that is not possible for now.

Genghis Khan IV PC OST - Chinese Strategy

With the conquest of Korea complete, Tokimune returns to Japan in order to make a proper hire, as his current heir is a good political officer but a mediocre military officer. Meanwhile, in China, the Song finally attacks the Yuan dynasty by taking one of their newly settled cities. A perfect distraction while I build up and raise the culture level of my cities due to all the roads being finally built.

vSnfd46.png

gix8W8t.png

A few turns later, the song resumes its invasion of Japan. As always, Tokimune leads a defense against them, and he easily destroys them. After this, the Song stops attacking, and I can merrily build up the cities, although trade by sea is rather difficult due to the low naval culture of Kamakura, leading to random shipwrecks.

Genghis Khan IV PS1 OST - Siege battle

Shit, the Song has decided to get serious for once. Sending a powerful officer to lead the attack on the cities of Dazaifu and Tokimune is too late to intercept the force. I'll have to endure a siege and hope I can hold out long enough.

mpsg04e.png

nvK1Z2T.png

Unfortunately, that hope is dashed once I see that the Song is able to recruit the powerful Mongolian cabalry as a result of their recent conquest of the Yuan City. The Samurai fiercely fire upon the invaders but the Song infantry breaks through the gates and power and numbers of the Mongolian cavalry are too much much. As a result, the city of Dazaifu falls but do they spare and releases all the officers inside. Unfortunately for them, I'm not going to return the favor.

Next turn, Tokimune attacks the Song fleet outside Dazaifu, easily destroying it, and he manages to persuade one officer while he executes the stubborn one. He then besieges the city, which thankfully no longer has the officer who conquered it as he is replaced by an inferior officer. Still, he initially manages to give Tokimune some trouble by using successful tactics at the start of the battle and his crossbowmen and catapult, wrecking havoc, but eventually Tokimunes retakes Dazaifu by the skin of his teeth.

While in the Middle East, the Mamluk Sultanate singlehandedly takes on the Il-Khanate and nearly conquers the Eastern Roman Empire before suddenly retreating.

qCgGAJl.png

Meanwhile, the Song sends another powerful officer to continue their invasion of Japan. The threat of Song means Tokimune will be a sword and shield protecting Dazaifu until it recovers, and then I can launch a counter-invasion of Song in mainland China.

You meant to say that you decided to save the Korean people from their king who had already secretly bowed down to the Mongols and who attacked you unprovoked. Under your leadership the Korean peninsula will be safe from the barbarians and it will also flourish and prosper.

The last chapter has the Kamakura Shogunate conquering the Goryeo Dynasty as its first step towards its conquest of the mainland. Unfortunately, it paid the price of being merciful to the Song Dynasty when it conquered the city of Dazaifu, and such a stain towards the land of the Rising Sun cannot be forgiven as the Shogunate plans to finally destroy this ungrateful nation.

*Screenshot of the 3rd Dazaifu siege*

An earthquake strikes the capital city of Kamakura, taking down a few facilities thanks to the city's recently high architectural culture. The gods have shown their displeasure towards my actions in being merciful towards the song. I'll correct that soon enough. With Dazaifu damaged from the constant battles, Tokimune can only recruit warrior monks, but thankfully he has the ambush tactics to balance that out as he engages with the song.

Even Tokimune is wary of fighting two armies mostly consisting of Mongolian cavalry, so he has the Warrior Monks hide in ambush to nullify the approaching cavalry. Soon, I was be able to destroy almost all of their units and win the battle. I have one of the captured Song officers meet a proper execution.

Unfortunately, next turn, the Song again besieges the weakened city of Dazaifu, and despite my ferocious defense that wiped out almost all of their units, it was not enough to hold on, and the city once again falls to the Song. Tokimune vents his frustration by attacking the nearest Song army and hacking the captured officer to pieces.

h9SSXUA.png

As if to add even more problems. The recently conquered lands of Korea are also under attack by the Song, and worse, they're being led by Wen Tianxiang, an excellent officer who's considered one of the three loyal princes of the Song. With Tokimune and the Daizufu officers heading to Kamakura to gather troops to retake Dazaifu, it's now up to Kim Tong-Jeong to fend off this fearsome threat, and he uses guerilla tactics to destroy a Song army.

Next turn, the officer immediately besieges Daizafu and manages to once again barely retake the city as most of his troops are wiped out and his unit barely hangs by a thread. The Song officer is executed when he refuses to join.

The recapture of Dazaifu not only prompts a new invasion force by the Song but they also order Wen's army to retake it. Tokimune destroys a Song army in a naval battle, but Wen targets the recently conquered Dazaifu in a siege, but I managed to stall them thanks to them have fewer Mongolian Cavalry in ranks, which made them reluctant to attack me units despite my inferiority of numbers due to mostly only having inferior infantry and Wen only has mediocre WAR that left his own Warrior Monks to waste. Tokimune then attacks the depleted force of Wen in a land battle next turn and easily destroys them, and Tokimune grants him an honorable execution when he displays his utter loyalty to his nation.

After clearing the remaining Song armies, Tokimune decides to stay in Dazaifu to protect it from the constant Song invasions, holding a party to have some quality time with his wives and increase the loyalty of the defected Song officers.

Next turn, the Yuan dynasty finally sends its forces to retake its captured city from the Song and a their capital city also gets hit by a tornado. The loss of that city will deprive the Song of the powerful Mongolian cavalry, and the invasion forces decide to pull a hasty retreat as they go to the front lines to deal with the Mongol invasion. I'm taking advantage of that period of peace to strengthen Dazaifu and later have Tokimune invade the Song capital city of Linan himself.

While all this chaos was going on, two of Tokimune's sons recently came of age and are now ready to lead armies. Both of them are sadly mediocre, but they can command 5000 men just like their father and they also inherit most of his battle skills, so that offsets their stat disadvantage. Tokimune decides to engage in some quality fatherly bonding by launching a counter-invasion of the Song while they are busy fighting the Yuan. A few turns of sea traval, and the Japanese Shogunate forces have landed on China, ready to besiege the unprotected capital of the Song.

The Song capital of Linan is liberated from the weak dynasty of the Song, and many of their cultural artifacts will be put to better use in the hands of the Japanese. Many Song officers quickly proclaim their allegiance to their new Japanese overlords, while the Song Emperor is given a proper execution for his crimes against the Japanese mainland.

Don't worry, I'll finish the war that your dynasty has failed to do so. The Song has lost it's right to rule China when it has been continually been invaded by horse nomads in the form of the Jurchen Jin Dynasty and the Mongol Yuan Dynasty, the Age of China is over and the Age of Japan has begun.

The last chapter has the Kamakura Shogunate finally declaring war upon the Song Dynasty for its repeated attempts to invade the Japanese island, destroying their armies, executing their officers, and ending up conquering their capital city of Lin'an. It is now poised to finish the dying Chinese dynasty once and for all in order to prepare against the might of the Yuan Dynasty.

The loss of their capital city has utterly weakened the Song as their remaining city lacks the horse resources required for their cavalry units, leaving them with weak light infantry and catapults for their armies. Tokimune sets out from Linan to destroy the Song remnants, easily clearing out the weak armies along the way. Meanwhile, in Japan and Korea, I prepare to have caravan units trade with the newly captured city of Linan in order to boost their cultural level, just in case I lose the city later.

Meanwhile, in Europe, aside from the usual wars between the Kingdom of England and France and the Kingdom of Sicily and Venice, the Mongol Kipchack Khanate now targets the Kingdom of Poland, though unlike the Russians, the Poles are actually holding back the Mongols from their city of Krakov.

Next turn, Tokimune begins his siege to destroy the Song. The current Song Emperor has excellent stats compared to his incompetent predecessor, but he has poor unit aptitude, which makes the units under his command less effective than they should be. His catapults do hit hard, but his units are neutralized by Tokimune's use of the confuse tactics. Soon enough, the Samurai break through the gates and easily run through the garrison. The city has been taken, and the Song dynasty falls with a whimper.

The remaining cultural items of the Song are acquired, and besides the great cultural level increase from all the loot, the Kamakura Shogunate is able to recruit siege units at last. Also, the increase in cultural levels in turn also allows for the creation of new cultural items; important among them is the discovery of gunpower, the first requirement to recruit the powerful cannon units.

While the Kamakura Shogunate is busy rebuilding their newly liberated Chinese territory, the Yuan Dynasty is under attack by the Ogedei Khanate as their leader Kaidu personally conquers one of their cities, a valuable distraction to keep Kublai Khan from focusing on the new eastern power. Also, the Chagatai Khanate makes things worse for the struggling Il-Khanate by conquering Nishapur, and the Mamluks are still attacking their city of Tabriz. The Mongols are tearing each other to pieces, a sad sight to see when it Genghis' original goal was to unite and stop the conflicts tearing his people apart.

Also, diplomats from the Kingdom of Pagan and the Vietnamese Tran Dynasty offer their respects, with the former offering an alliance. Not exactly helpful, but I appreciate the gestures. The years of the Kamakura Shogunate are a peaceful, basically along a build-up period where I gather talented officers, raise their loyalty through banquets, and rebuild the cities in preparations for an invasion of the Yuan, which is going to be tough due to having two cities essentially protecting their capital city of Dadu.

5JgPXYy.png

Having gathered enough officers at Linan, it's now time to attack the Yuan dynasty while they are distracted fighting the Ogudei Khanate and their current invasion of the Vietnamese Tran Dynasty.

I really like the cultural item appropriation thing the game has when you take out a rival. And the officer poaching. Reminds me a bit of Uncharted Waters and Brigandine, respectively. Must make offensive wars a lot more appealing than they would be otherwise.

In the last chapter, the Kamakura Shogunate has conquered the Song Dynasty and has spent its time on domestic tasks in order to prepare for the invasion of the Mongol Yuan Dynasty, who are too busy fighting against the Ogudei Khanate and currently invading the Vietnamese Tran Dynasty.

u1pqSLg.png

c5u1yyr.png

With all preparations done, I'm going to outline my plan to invade the Yuan Dynasty and conquer liberate China. Tokimune will lead the 1st Shogunate army to strike the city of Myshu near Dadu due to the presence of a Mongol Prince in charge of the city garrison. He may have mediocre stats, but he likely commands Mongolian cavalry and cannon units bolstered by having 1000 men. Once the city is conquered, he'll use it as a stepping stone to assault Dadu, which is going to be an even tougher challenge because Kublai Khan is stronger than Tokimune himself. Two of Tokimune's sons will accompany their father.

xFVpERm.png

For the 2nd invasion force, the other two sons of Tokimune will lead the attack on the city of Xiangyang and later attack the city of Chengdu. The officer commanding is a mediocre officer, although he is a native Mongolian who will be able to utilize the Mongolian Cavalry to full strength.

Aft9C8s.png

The 3rd invasion force is a Korean allied army led by Kim Tong-jeong in the city of Gaesong. They will need to take the city of Liaoyang to the right of Dadu to protect not only the Korean Peninsula from Yuan retaliation but also establish a foothold to conquer the Yuan city of Huining in the forest, which Tokimune will use once his business in Dadu is finished since it's also protected by a Mongol prince and the Koreans are too weak to deal with him.

ecjyOSX.png

And here's the unit roster of the Kamakura Shogunate. I'll primarily use the Monk Unit as the main infantry unit, the Samurai Horse Archer Unit for the Japanese officers, the Lancer Cavalry Unit for the Chinese officers, and the Catapults for siege purposes.

Je3qVt5.png

GSdGgu9.png

The righteous liberation of China against the barbaric pretender state of the Yuan has now begun as Kamakura forces (and their Korean allies) take up the proper formation of their armies to reinforce each other just in case the Yuan makes a preemptive attack.

JNFWzJ4.png

GEPFrJU.png

v39vDFw.png

iTgnCCR.png

In rather convenient timing, a snowstorm descends upon mainland China, and it gives the field units an additional 2 movement costs. For the Kamakura invasion force, this is a heavy disadvantage as I intended to blitz their cities, and the slower army units that have siege weapons (which Tokimune's unit has) are even slower, and this gives the Yuan enough time to deploy their units to defend their cities, and the next turn I'm forced to destroy them. The Kamakura-Yuan war has now begun.

hEwTHJE.png

rKzyXJl.png

ALOYVeK.png

frLhpTA.png

mLIH73y.png

Next turn, the 2nd Shogunate Force is the first to begin their siege of Xiangyang. Using overwhelming numbers and taking care not to unintentionally create a blockade that stalls the siege, the liberation of Xiangyang goes smoothly despite the Yuan cannon giving some trouble, and I have most of the army units continue on to free the city of Chengdu as well.

q99kyFM.png

2Zwzlhp.png

kxbLho2.png

W5E3hbd.png

Next is the 1st Shogunate's siege of Myshu. The beginnings of the siege were tense. The Yuan prince's royal army, which gave his unit 1000 men plus the power of the Mongolian cavalry and the cannons, dealt great damage to Tokimune's units, and the confusing tactics were less effective than usual in immobilizing the Yuan garrison. Thankfully, his cannons also had less success in immobilizing my units, so once the gate has been broken, Tokimune's samurai quickly target the cannons and kill off the CO unit. Resulting in a complete victory and execution of the Mongol prince.

eeKu8t7.png

XG8nb6n.png

ZGujkxQ.png

YysIuID.png

jIpPyCt.png

The last are the Koreans. The strongest units that the city of Liaoyang can recruit are crossbowmen and cannon units, and the Yuan officer commanding the garrison is weak. Kim Tong-jeong effectively utilized the ambush skill to hide his monk units so that he could have them scale the castle walls undetected while his catapults softened the garrison units inside and the other army broke through the gate. An easy win, and the first phase of the invasion is accomplished.

The 2nd phase of the liberation of China begins as, while Tokimune's forces prepare for their attack on the Yuan capital city of Dadu, the 2nd Shogunate force braves the tough terrain of the city of Chengdu, defeating a Yuan army on the way. The turn after that though sees vicious fighting as the Yuan armies of Chengdu come out and overwhelm two army units, but thankfully the officers managed to escape with their lives.

Meanwhile Tokimune and the 1st Shogunate army move to the city of Dadu, cutting through the two army units protecting the city, and Tokimune and one of his sons now prepare to besiege the capital and engage in what will most likely be the most ferocious battle fought as two powerful leaders will face each other.

Kublai Khan, the Emperor of the Yuan Dynasty and the great Khan of the Mongolian Empire, was slightly stronger than Tokimune and, unfortunately, far smarter than Tokimune. He commands a powerful combination of Mongolian cavalry and cannon units, and they number 1000 men each. Tokimune decides to have his son's units go first while keeping his units in reserve for the final push while his catapult units help break through the gates. However, he has a single monk unit hidden from Kublai's sight, and thanks to the ambush skill, it will be used to strike Yuan's cannon units to prevent them from blasting the Samurai units to fiery bits.

Tokimune's forces manage to break the gate, but Kublai responds with a ferocious counterattack with rapid fire arrows and cannon blasts that deals heavy damage to the Samurai units near the gates. An astonishingly lucky Tokimune manages to successfully use a confused tactic to immobilize one of Kublai's cannons, while a lucky catapult strike manages to send a Mongol cavalry unit into berserk status. Next turn, one of Tokimune's samurai units deals heavy damage to a Mongol Cavalry unit while I finally manage to have the Monk unit scale through the walls. Kublai responds to the sudden threat by focusing all attacks on the monk unit, giving me an opportunity to finally kill the garrison unit blocking the gate and finally breaking through the city.

Kublai's forces, however, dealt the invading Kamakura forces a horrific blow through their ferocious attacks, nearly depleting the strength of the elite samurai and forcing Tokimune himself to finally enter the battlefield. In an outright display of divine intervention, a lucky catapult shot manages to inflict a confused state on Kublai's CO unit. Tokimune didn't waste this chance and ordered all his forces to strike the CO unit with all their might. The royal garrison of Kublai sees the impending danger to their emperor and attempts to cut through the Kamakura forces to attack Tokimune's CO unit.

klPiGEc.png

c8uOKNY.png

Next turn, Kublai's CO unit has organized itself from confusion and pulled out all stops to defeat the Kamakura forces, but it is now too late. Tokimune's son orders his catapult unit to fire on the now-weakened CO unit, and it is destroyed. The Yuan royal garrison is sent into a state of panic as the Kamakura Shogunate earns a hard-won victory.

Most of the Yuan officers defect to their new Japanese overlord; the Kamakura Shogunate acquires the Yuan's cultural items, the Qimin Yaoshu, a ancient Chinese book of Agriculture, an Armillary sphere, an astronomical instrument and most importantly the Hand cannon, which allows the recruitment of Cannon units; and Kublai himself is given proper execution for a worthy opponent. Tokimune has torn the heart of the Yuan Dynasty, and while its remnants fight the inevitable, the Mandate of Heaven shines brightly under the Rising Sun.

Sorry for the long delay but unfortunately I've run into a terrible situation where the computer I'm playing the game and it's current playthrough has run into serious problems where I can no longer run it and I'm planning to take it to a repair shop. That and even more pressing matters in life has forced me to put a stop to this LP for the time being.
