It's a standard entrance to vault. Go back up the stairs and once you're up, blink away, the vault guards will fuck you.

Also thats a SHITTY weapon for this kind of character. Wasnt there a dwarven bearded axe lying around? Just enchant one up to about 7/7 and give it vorpal ego. 51 STR means you will deal insane damage.

How do you get this setup instead of only one at a time? I'd love to be able to see monsters and inventory simultaneously.

It's just vanilla trunk.

And using Slouch was my first consideration. If I take more than, say, 20% damage I'll blink away and get another three or four casts in before they're on me.

The problem is, if that *doesn't* work, I'm completely fucked as that's my only blink scroll.

Edit:

I'd say killing eight and surviving to be a success. Slouch wasn't doing *nearly* enough damage to stick around on the level (two casts, all were roughly 70% hp) for me to take out every one, so I decided to play it safe (had barely taken any damage by that point) and bail up the staircase. Didn't dip below 80% hp while fighting all eight guards that followed, so a return visit is possible.

Even managed to get a +1 large shield with rF+ out of it. Mmm...SH 49...

Zot was a lot hairier than I expected, especially Zot 5. At least now I know what to expect next time. Hatless spriggan with no resists except elec and magic and clarity ftw! Suck on that golden dragon! Wasn't even fucking poison immune. Also, I actually spent less than 100 turns in Zot 5. Next time I visit, I'm cleaning that place out.

Also: Summon Butterflies is one of the most overpowered spells in the entire game. So funny stopping abominations and hellhounds dead in their tracks with a swarm of butterflies for several turns for 1 lousy MP.

First, I just whacked through Icy Swamp 5, and it was a joke. Hydra simulacrum are total pussies and give barely any XP, though Ice dragons are chilly. Inside the vault there was the rune, but no treasure other than one stack of poison needles. Ain't there supposed to be treasure?

Second, is anyone old enough to remember that song that goes "Wrap it up, I'll take it?" Sometimes I sing, "Chop it up, I'll eat it" to myself while I'm playing Crawl. It's a good thing I live alone.

That's pretty bad. Last two acquire scroll my spriggan burned netted him a pair of cloaks, neither of which was nearly as useful as my elven cloak of preservation. I think the first was a plain cloak of preservation and the second was magic resistance.

What really pissed me off though, was that I never managed to find a hat. 27 dungeon levels, vaults, snake pit, shoals, elf, irc, hive, a portal or two, and not one fucking hat. What the hell? :x

Also, if your character is a trog worshipper, that amulet is still better than the fucking amulet of faith I wore all game long. At least warding does something in combat.

Oh wow. Oh wow oh wow oh wow. Crunchy just died to the interface. I mean, he was in dire straights so maybe he wouldn't have made it anyway, but oh fucking wow.

OK, I cruise through the first four levels of the Shoals. Total joke. I pop down to 5, and check it out, all these orcs in the water, and I'm in the perfect defensive position, and the merfolks are trapped behind plants. And of course I'm not paying attention, and the merfolks are biting through the plants and their stupid turtles apparently can hit from 2 away (how cute) and this Saint Roka guy smites of course, so I berserk. And I kill Roka, and I kill orc after orc after orc, and despite the fact that I'm killing the fuck out of everything, berserk ends. I thought slaughter extended it, but oh no it doesn't. Then there's a merfolk on the stairs, and I'm like fuck let's try to kill him. Then my health is almost out and I'm like, "This is a problem for RPGCodex." I mean, I was fucked, no doubt, but I had two scrolls each of blink and teleport, and I had the wisdom of the Codex, so Crunchy could have pulled through:

So I take the screenshot, and I do a character dump, and then I think I'd like to count how many orcs I killed so I can complain about how lame it is that berserk didn't keep up, because I was tearing through them, and what the fuck good is fucking berserk if it runs out even when you're killing? So I click on the message history.

So on the message history you can scroll up and down with the arrow keys. So I scrolled up a bit, scrolled down. Held down the arrows each way while I did it. It turns out, if you scroll down far enough you just exit the fucking message log and you're back in the game. I attacked the plant beneath me for three straight turns and died before I even knew what happened.

I don't even know if I'm mad or not. I'm in shock. What a stupid, stupid death. I spent hours on this fucker, and the message history was the hardest boss of all.

They're a very unique experience.

I just had the most unsatisfying level 11 character ever - a FeBe. I felt like I didn't earn it.

I'm doing a FeCr now and it's a lot of fun though.

I think without magic they'd be super boring. Trog is only so interesting...

Well they can't use most items so yeah, you need magic to keep them interesting. Other Troglings at least have wands and shit to play with. Oh, and Felids are brokenly overpowered in Zot Defense. When you revive it unrots all your hp, so you don't even have to tank the fucking orb yourself.

@Yeesh: I hate deaths like that. It's my one gripe with permadeath; sometimes you really didn't die fairly. And I don't mean walking down the stairs and imploding to stupid monsters, I mean interface shit or game crashes and the like. Or the cat walks across the keyboard. You totally could have survived that too, that patch of land behind the plant to the left would have been the perfect spot to blink to, the plant would have blocked any thrown shit and you could have escape further from there. :x

The way simulacra work is that they're weakass zombies except that they do a shocking amount of cold damage. Something like a stone giant or hydra simulacrum can kill a spriggan or deep elf with no resist from full in one turn with good rolls.

I tried the new trunk Okawaru; They changed Might to "Heroism", which gives you a +5 to most non-spellcasting skills and is nice in both the early and midgame, useless late. Haste became "Finesse", which is a haste-effect that only works on your actions rather than your movement - but it's unnerfed haste, meaning a 100% speed boost rather than the nerfed 50%. However, I still prefer Trog or Makhleb for melee characters because they have a method of rapid healing that doesn't require me to find a ring of regeneration, which I never did in this game.

The demon blade of speed was dropped by one of Margaery's hell knights on like DL 25; I had unfortunately wasted a ton of enchant weapon II and III on a gifted double sword already. With finesse running, a demon blade of speed with a demonspawn, and +7 slaying bonus this dude was a blender in melee.

Shield of resistance is also one of the artifacts where I go "yerp" when I see it. The demonspawn scale mutations are also very sick when you realize they're almost doubled in effect by guaranteed damage resistance on de-nerfed trunk armor.

My favourite is in nethack, where you hang around for the corpses to rot so lichen can grow on them, so you can kill THAT and carry it around as permafood.

I'm going to play in trunk from now on, so I'll probably be dicking with armor soon. But first I want to try clearing dungeon sprint at least once. I think if zero'd in on a winning combo: Ogre Hunter. There's so few enemies that you can pretty much use the boulders through the whole map, especially if you enchant them early. And thrown boulders just rape. Plus you can go for either Trog or spellcasting depending on which altars/shops you get early. Though my latest runner got chomped by a fucking 12 headed hydra with what appeared to be double normal speed for no apparent reason. Even 150 hp go down fast to a 12 headed hydra when you got no evasion or armor. And of course I couldn't berserk because the room has a fucking eyeball in it so I had to wear stasis. My kingdom for a blindfold.

Judging by your gifts, I think Oka is pretty much the archer god now. Those are nice ammo gifts, the sling is amazing, and +100% attack speed is a shitload more impressive when you're firing arrows and don't have to run around.

Punk is a fixed artifact; it's pretty rare to see it and it was the first serious sling Okie produced. Trog is really even better than Okawaru, you're almost sure to have a sling or crossbow with a huge damage bonus by halfway through Lair with a Trogling.

I think the current implementation of archery is too strong, steel ammo is too good, enchant weapon I sucks for anything but making ammo sick, etc. So I just use it to kill fleeing enemies and minor shit like that rather than build it up to really high levels. If I were trying to run streaks on CAO with random characters or something I'd probably use archery with every shitty class/race, but that was just sloppy a test drive game.

That's pretty cool. I only played nethack long enough to get my tourist killed in a horrible manner though.

Quick question - is there a point in additionally enchanting branded daggers like dagger of poison (+0, +1 currently).

Yeah, branded daggers are the ones you want to enchant ideally. You can't enchant artifacts after all. As for venom in particular, that's a pretty meh brand in the long run.The brands with fire, ice, speed, slaying (Holy wrath, orc slaying, etc.) or physical extra damage benefit the most from the damage enchants (enchant weapon 2, or the Y part of +X, +Y) but anything will be more useful with extra accuracy.

Chaos, Distortion, Venom, Electrocution, Pain, Draining and probably some other thing I'm forgetting, do flat amounts of extra damage, so they're nicer on faster weapons and don't matter as much if they lack damage bonuses.

Remember you can enchant missile weapons too though, if you bother to use them. +7 darts will last a long fucking time.
