I'm working on an update. For some reason I'm getting more and more screenshots for each one (over 200 for #7), so give me some time.

Brevity is the soul of wit.

I probably won't be able to do that before the weeekend, barring some miracle that nets me 2d6 hours of free time earlier.

Why eat, sleep or go to work when you have an (awesome) LP to update?

Because not everyone can make a living playing vidya games and writing about them on teh internets, maybe?

these are the words of a defeatist and traitor to the motherland.

Good idea. For $500K I promise doing LPs for the next 30 years, with frequent and regular updates.

Anyways, Bros, let's aim for tomorrow with #7.

Hi guys. Sorry I couldn't be here for the last update. I see You have somehow managed without me.

codex_10.jpg
We did.

lilarcor1.jpg
Aye.

Ok, let me se what is new...

bg2_up06_015.jpg

Hey this is nice.

codex_10.jpg
Um, yeah, I, ah, found it lying around somewhere.

Right. What else did You get...? OH FUCK.

bg2_up06_112.jpg

WHAT HAVE YOU DONE!? WHAT HAVE YOU DONE!?

codex_10.jpg
It's not what you think...

I CANNOT BELIEVE THIS! I LEFT YOU ALONE FOR JUST ONE UPDATE!

codex_10.jpg
No, really, I-

I don't want to hear it! Let's just move on.

Update #7: What Is Wrong With This City?
bg2_up07_000.jpg

It seems we are in Bridge District now. We might as well continue from here.

bg2_up07_001.jpg

Quite a long way to go until the next level up.

bg2_up07_002.jpg

I don't even want to know how it is possible that You both got a human flesh in your backpack AND an increase in reputation.

bg2_up07_003.jpg

These saving throws still need some improvement until they reach the comfort zone (5 or less is nice).
Also, we should have probably increased short sword proficiency first. We won't be using staves just yet, and that bonus to backstabbing would be nice.

codex_10.jpg
I warned you I won't be fighting with a stick, but no. You had to be smarter.

bg2_up07_004.jpg

This AC would be ok, if not for the penalty against crushing weapons (+2, meaning it is effectively 0). Against other types of damage it is -4 or -5, so not bad.

bg2_up07_005.jpg

No changes here (and there probably won't be any for a long time, so I won't be screenshotting this part any more).

I forgot to screenshot the fattest kill/bodycount screen, so we'll check it out next time.

bg2_up07_006.jpg

The Codex has a somewhat loaded backpack.

bg2_up07_007.jpg

So we start by selling excess stuff to the nearest merchant (I am also going to omit such 'events' from now on, except when there's something interesting in them).

bg2_up07_008.jpg

And now let's explore some of the buildings in this district.

bg2_up07_009.jpg

Oh. A temple.

codex_10.jpg
Can we plunder it?

No.

codex_10.jpg
Let's leave then.

bg2_up07_010.jpg

When we're off exploring, trivialities such as locked doors are never going to stop us.

codex_10.jpg
On the contrary. Remember, children: locked places usually have the best loot.

bg2_up07_011.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Not to mention trapped containers.

bg2_up07_012.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Bingo!

bg2_up07_013.jpg

Potions are always nice.

codex_10.jpg
Especially now, when we have a potion case. Which I bought. Not you. Just saying.

bg2_up07_014.jpg

Let's check this place now.

codex_10.jpg
Looks nice.

bg2_up07_015.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Um... Athkatla pest control? We've heard residents complaining about a goblin infestation...

bg2_up07_016.jpg

Nice try.

codex_10.jpg
This ring of human influence is overrated.

bg2_up07_017.jpg

lilarcor1.jpg
Mwahahahaha, slaughter!

codex_10.jpg
Mwaha- Hey, don't steal my lines!

bg2_up07_018.jpg

These guards drop magic arrows.

codex_10.jpg
Quite nice of them.

Of course they also use them to shoot at You.

codex_10.jpg
Bastards!

bg2_up07_019.jpg

We meet another guard in the next room.

codex_10.jpg
Hi, nice to meet you. Don't shoot magic arrows at me, I can use them better. Thanks.

bg2_up07_020.jpg

This looks nice, except we find nothing interesting in any of these.

codex_10.jpg
:decline:

bg2_up07_021.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Not supposed to be here? Yeah, I hear that a lot.

bg2_up07_022.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I disagree, however.

lilarcor1.jpg
Mwahahahaha, slaughter!

codex_10.jpg
I'm warning you!

bg2_up07_023.jpg

This guy dropped something sellable.

codex_10.jpg
From the moment I saw him, I knew he looked like a resonable chap.

bg2_up07_024.jpg

More potions.

codex_10.jpg
Which we can place in my neat potion case which I've bought myself, without your help.

bg2_up07_025.jpg

Yeah, I know, potion case.

codex_10.jpg
It's really neat!

bg2_up07_026.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Never see me coming...

Oh god, I hope so.

bg2_up07_027.jpg

31 damage. Not bad.

codex_10.jpg
He still lives, though. :decline:

bg2_up07_028.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Ok, fixed.

bg2_up07_029.jpg

codex_10.jpg
It's a trap!

I'm pretty sure we've already done this joke before. Besides, not that kind of trap.

codex_10.jpg
Oh yeah. Like I care what you think.

bg2_up07_030.jpg

I think we've hit the jackpot.

codex_10.jpg
Awesome.

bg2_up07_031.jpg

And a magic flail as a bonus.

bg2_up07_032.jpg

Nothing to see here.

bg2_up07_033.jpg

This floor is done. Let's go downstairs.

bg2_up07_034.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Oh look, more walking XP.

bg2_up07_035.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Fuck! Stop shooting me!

How about you tell them about your neat potion case?

bg2_up07_036.jpg

I'm sure they would like to hear about the neat potion case.

Death count: 24

Loading.

codex_10.jpg
Right, so I think we should go all tactical on those two.

Meaning?

codex_10.jpg
Maybe I should cast a spell or something?

bg2_up07_037.jpg

Maybe you should.

codex_10.jpg
Fucking useless chainmail!

bg2_up07_038.jpg

We close in, so both guards switch from bows to melee.

bg2_up07_039.jpg

This + Horror changes the tide of the battle.

bg2_up07_040.jpg

codex_10.jpg
And stay fucking down!

bg2_up07_041.jpg

For everyone interested, here's the 'story background' for this location. It apparently belongs to some out-of-town merchant. Cut quest, anyone?

bg2_up07_042.jpg

Oh yeah, we kill the guard.

bg2_up07_043.jpg

Some spell scrolls. Dispel magic is always nice to have, just in case.

bg2_up07_044.jpg

A trapped altar.

codex_10.jpg
That Farrahd guy must really hate priests. He's a bro. :bro:

bg2_up07_045.jpg

codex_10.jpg
An emerald. I like.

bg2_up07_046.jpg

Yet another guard meets his demise.

codex_10.jpg
I don't get these guys. Why do they take up such a dangerous job? I bet they're underpaid too.

You have a strange way of showing sympathy.

bg2_up07_047.jpg

How many cool things can we find in these? Let's try to guess.

codex_10.jpg
Um... five?

Try again.

codex_10.jpg
Three, maybe?

Closer, but no.

codex_10.jpg
It's zero, isn't it?

It is.

bg2_up07_048.jpg

Does this count as a nice find?

codex_10.jpg
Not really.

bg2_up07_049.jpg

Anyway, we're done with this place. Let's move on!

bg2_up07_051.jpg

Our next target destination is this modest house here.

bg2_up07_052.jpg

It seems they believe they have something interesting here.

codex_10.jpg
We'll see.

bg2_up07_053.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Oh-kay. Why would anyone... Ah, forget it.

You're still going to steal it, aren't You?

codex_10.jpg
Of course. The world is my oyster, and stuff.

bg2_up07_058.jpg

Next up, this little barn/shed here.

codex_10.jpg
I bet there's nothing interesting inside.

bg2_up07_054.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Alright. I would've lost that bet there.

bg2_up07_055.jpg

codex_10.jpg
To be honest, I'm not seeing this in optimistic colors.

Don't be a wuss. The Codex never surrenders.

codex_10.jpg
He does however, sometimes retreat. And I believe this to be one of those times.

bg2_up07_056.jpg

Falahar and Pitre quickly show us it won't be easy here.

codex_10.jpg
EASY!?

bg2_up07_057.jpg

It definitely won't be easy.

Death count: 25

Load game.

codex_10.jpg
I have a suggestion. Let's come back here later, when I am well-rested and maybe also levelled-up.

bg2_up07_059.jpg

Nah, let's try again immediately. This time we enter hidden in shadows. These guys are already hostile, so we won't go easy on them.

codex_10.jpg
Oh. We won't GO EASY on them. Great.

bg2_up07_060.jpg

Okay, I kind of hoped this would kill the mage.

codex_10.jpg
Well it hasn't. What now?

bg2_up07_061.jpg

We manage to Horror some of them, but the odds still don't look to be much in our favour.

codex_10.jpg
I have nothing to say.

bg2_up07_062.jpg

Right.

Death count: 26

Load.

codex_10.jpg
Any smartass comments?

You have to admit, we were a little bit closer to victory this time.

codex_10.jpg
We were able to see it with binoculars instead of a telescope, yeah.

Let's come back here later, when You are well-rested and maybe also levelled-up.

codex_10.jpg
Indeed.

bg2_up07_063.jpg

Let's check this house here.

bg2_up07_064.jpg

The Codex employes his keen diplomatic sense once again.

bg2_up07_065.jpg

It ends predictably.

codex_10.jpg
Fucking peasants.

bg2_up07_066.jpg

Amnish bodygaurds do not fuck around.

codex_10.jpg
I'll kill you all!

bg2_up07_067.jpg

I kind of saw this coming.

Death count: 27

Reload.

codex_10.jpg
What the fuck is wrong with this city? I can't enter someone else's house and rob everything blind without getting killed.

Yeah, imagine that.

bg2_up07_068.jpg

We can however try an approach that is a little more subtle.

bg2_up07_069.jpg

Except it fails when we actually want to steal something.

codex_10.jpg
:x

bg2_up07_070.jpg

Amnish soldiers apparently need backup.

codex_10.jpg
I could use some backup too, actually.

bg2_up07_071.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Oh fuck, that is a lot of people to kill.

bg2_up07_072.jpg

Well, this has not gone well.

Death count: 28

Loading.

codex_10.jpg
I'm not going back in there without a cloudkill prepared.

bg2_up07_073.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Maybe this place will be a little more friendly.

bg2_up07_074.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Ok, it's not, but at least it is easier to deal with.

bg2_up07_075.jpg

Not very impressive, but at least worth a few coins.

bg2_up07_076.jpg

codex_10.jpg
People in this city are seriously paranoid.

bg2_up07_077.jpg

codex_10.jpg
My neat-

Don't. Just don't.

bg2_up07_078.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Okay, what's that?

bg2_up07_079.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Nice! I've always wanted a pet berserker but Gorion, the fucker, never let me keep one.

bg2_up07_080.jpg

Back on the street, we witness this conversation.

bg2_up07_081.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I wasn't eavesdropping. You can go and play with your whore if you want to, I don't care.

bg2_up07_082.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Didn't you hear what I've just said!?

bg2_up07_083.jpg

lilarcor1.jpg
DIE!

codex_10.jpg
Good job, Lilarcor.

bg2_up07_084.jpg

One of the thieves dropped some interesting stuff.

bg2_up07_085.jpg

codex_10.jpg
What's a familiar?

It's kind of a wizard's pet. A mephit, for example.

codex_10.jpg
OH NO! TAKE IT AWAY! TAKE IT AWAY!

It could be something else too...

codex_10.jpg
TAKE IT AWAY! TAKE IT AWAY!

bg2_up07_086.jpg

We probably won't be using this spell, unless we have no other way to pass an encounter other than a specifically prepared spellset.

bg2_up07_087.jpg

The other guy dropped a scroll too.

bg2_up07_088.jpg

codex_10.jpg
:incline:

bg2_up07_089.jpg

We learn all the spells.

codex_10.jpg
Including the Summon That Horrible Mephit spell?

Yes, including Find Familiar.

codex_10.jpg
Fuck.

bg2_up07_090.jpg

Back in the Copper Coronet, we meet Joluv, who sells Icewind Dale themed items.

bg2_up07_091.jpg

One of them is this nice sword, which is actually a little better than Lilarcor. The difference is not worth the 10K price, though.

lilarcor1.jpg
Better than me? Ha! I'm the biggest, the best, better than the rest!

bg2_up07_092.jpg

We're out of spells, so let's rest a bit.

codex_10.jpg
:incline:

bg2_up07_093.jpg

Okay, now we can... Oh, no.

codex_10.jpg
What? What is going on?

bg2_up07_094.jpg

I forgot about these dreams.

codex_10.jpg
Dreams? I remember those. They had this nice narrator and blood. Lots of blood.

bg2_up07_095.jpg

Now they have Imoen.

codex_10.jpg
Fuck.

bg2_up07_096.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Hey, it's the edge of the world. Kind of cool.

bg2_up07_097.jpg

codex_10.jpg
So, what exactly is she rambling on about?

Beats me. I can't stand this inane shit. This is what you get when You try to write Planscape: Torment style dialogs without the talent to back this up.

codex_10.jpg
:codexisfor:We love You, MCA.

bg2_up07_098.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I'm not really following what is going on here.

Maybe you shuld try listetning to what she says?

codex_10.jpg
You think?

bg2_up07_099.jpg

codex_10.jpg
You wrongly assume I am coming at all.

bg2_up07_100.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Not this guy. I was hoping never to see him again.

Um...

bg2_up07_101.jpg

codex_10.jpg
You like talking about pain, it seems. Remind me of this when we meet IRL, 'kay?

bg2_up07_102.jpg

codex_10.jpg
And fuck you. I'm not adding that to my death count!

Ok, enough of this shit. Let's do some actual adventuring.

bg2_up07_103.jpg

First, we cast Find Familiar.

codex_10.jpg
What? NO!

bg2_up07_104.jpg

We get a cat.

codex_10.jpg
Nice! I've always wanted a pet car but Gorion, the fucker, never let me keep one.

I thought it was a berserker?

codex_10.jpg
Yes, it was supposed to be a berserker cat.

I can see the problem.

bg2_up07_105.jpg

Its skills are nothing special, but it has its uses.

lolcatsdotcomur5dhkw464f8hb16.jpg

bg2_up07_106.jpg

Next, we finally get rid of the shitty Mail of the Dead.

codex_10.jpg
The name is appropriate, by the way. I've been dead many times while wearing it.

bg2_up07_107.jpg

We immediately put the money to good use and buy Robe of Vecna.

codex_10.jpg
:yeah:

bg2_up07_108.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Cool. I'm looking prety badass now.

Notice the 112 HP, noble readers. That is because cat familiar has 24 HP, half of which The Codex gets as a bonus.

codex_10.jpg
:incline:

bg2_up07_109.jpg

Onward to Government district!

bg2_up07_110.jpg

The Codex begins his exploration of the new district with breaking into the first house we see.

codex_10.jpg
Mind you, I am not a burglar, just a loveable rogue.

bg2_up07_111.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Potions.

It's always good to have as much of these as You can carry.

bg2_up07_112.jpg

Ok, next building.

bg2_up07_113.jpg

codex_10.jpg
A temple. Boring.

bg2_up07_114.jpg

Moving along the street, we encounter this charming scene.

bg2_up07_115.jpg

codex_10.jpg
:fight:Burn her!

'Burn her'?

codex_10.jpg
What?

bg2_up07_116.jpg

codex_10.jpg
That is kind of racist, but they have a point. Drow are overall pretty horrible people.

bg2_up07_117.jpg

codex_10.jpg
She is kind of hot, though.

bg2_up07_118.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Fear not, noble virgin! I'm coming to help!

bg2_up07_119.jpg

'Noble virgin'?

bg2_up07_120.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Hey. She's the first hot woman ever who called me by name. Oh, and she did not say 'I'll kill you Codex!'.

bg2_up07_121.jpg

Fair enough.

bg2_up07_122.jpg

These fanatics don't take 'no' for an answer.

codex_10.jpg
I'll persuade them.

bg2_up07_123.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Mwahahahaha! Slaughter!

bg2_up07_124.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Fuck, I haven't noticed that one more archer there.

bg2_up07_125.jpg

Ok, I did not see this one coming.

Death count: 29

Loading.

codex_10.jpg
That's it. No more Mr. Nice Codex.

bg2_up07_126.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Let's see what they think about fighting me stoneskin-clad.

bg2_up07_127.jpg

codex_10.jpg
The fuck? What kind of inane shit is this?

bg2_up07_128.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I've got your license right here. Damn, he disappeared.

bg2_up07_129.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Anyway, let's kill these guys.

bg2_up07_130.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Shit! They hit kinda hard.

Time for some potion quaffing, I think.

bg2_up07_131.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Okay, two down!

bg2_up07_132.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Yes! Victory!

bg2_up07_133.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Have I really saved you before? Can't remember.

bg2_up07_134.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Go to grave district to get free sex. Gotcha.

bg2_up07_135.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I saved a drow from being burned and all I got was this one lousy potion.

bg2_up07_136.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I can't enter the prison? Prepos... Wait. Why would I want to enter the prison?

bg2_up07_137.jpg

There's no stopping The Codex. We use the side entrance.

codex_10.jpg
I still don't see the point.

bg2_up07_138.jpg

There's nothing interesting inside.

codex_10.jpg
No shit. Why did we even bother?

bg2_up07_140.jpg

Another potentially epic break-in interior exploration is stopped by an inconventional lock.

codex_10.jpg
Why are people doing this? Don't they know my curiosity will eat me alive if I can't enter some place? No decency. No respect.

bg2_up07_141.jpg

This one looks a little more promising.

bg2_up07_142.jpg

codex_10.jpg
You really have to be constantly vigilant around these parts.

bg2_up07_143.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Good we are still finding these. They tend to get used up pretty fast.

A moment later, we meet Jan Jansen. I would omit the conversation with him, but it seems to be some kind of a mini-quest (we got XP in the end), so I'll just leave it here without any comments:
bg2_up07_144.jpg

bg2_up07_145.jpg

bg2_up07_146.jpg

bg2_up07_147.jpg

bg2_up07_148.jpg

bg2_up07_149.jpg

bg2_up07_150.jpg

bg2_up07_151.jpg

bg2_up07_152.jpg

bg2_up07_153.jpg

Bioware humor is not as funny as I considered it to be when I was ten years younger.

codex_10.jpg
You actually found this FUNNY?

I got better.

bg2_up07_154.jpg

Moments later, we encounter a damsel weeaboo in distress.

bg2_up07_155.jpg

The Codex is very keen on doing what is right.

codex_10.jpg
I am?

You are, apparently.

bg2_up07_156.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Vampires! Jesus, give me strength!

How can You know who Jesus is?

codex_10.jpg
How couldn't I know? He's the best vampire hunter of all.

bg2_up07_157.jpg

codex_10.jpg
OhFuckThisHurts!

bg2_up07_158.jpg

codex_10.jpg
What are you doing to me? Stop doing it!

bg2_up07_159.jpg

They did not stop.

Death count: 30

Loading.

codex_10.jpg
What happened there was not normal.

Yeah, they drain your levels when they hit you. If they drain them all, you die.

codex_10.jpg
That's not fucking good.

bg2_up07_160.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Let's prepare for this confrontation up front.

bg2_up07_161.jpg

codex_10.jpg
You again? Fuck off!

bg2_up07_162.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Goddammit, now there's three of them!

bg2_up07_163.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Here, have a dispel!

bg2_up07_164.jpg

And our hero is stunned, which means he's also dead.

bg2_up07_165.jpg

Like I said.

Death count: 31

Load game.

codex_10.jpg
This is bullshit! How am I supposed to buff myself against the vampires if I get gangraped by these fucking cowlers every time I snap my fingers to light up a cigaret!

There is a way.

bg2_up07_166.jpg

Apparently, Cowled Wizards dont give a shit if someone's casting spells indoors.

codex_10.jpg
Oh.

Let us see if Stoneskin is enough for this.

bg2_up07_167.jpg

It is not.

Death count: 32

Load.

codex_10.jpg
Stoneskin failed me? How is that possible?

It stopped the damage but not level draining, it seems. We should have invested into that amulet instead of Robe of Vecna.

codex_10.jpg
What amulet?

You'll like it.

bg2_up07_168.jpg

We get some more buffs this time (also Mirror Image, which does not show on character sheet). We also emply the services of our berserker friend.

berserker_small_zpsdc3be58a.jpg
Blood Death and Vengeance!

lilarcor1.jpg
Kill everyone!

I can't help but notice that atmosphere in this party is getting a little unhealthy.

bg2_up07_169.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Vampiress is down!

lilarcor1.jpg
BLOOD!

berserker_small_zpsdc3be58a.jpg
RAAAARGH!

Now only to kill her two lackeys.

bg2_up07_170.jpg

berserker_small_zpsdc3be58a.jpg
ARGH!

Each successful attak drains The Codex of two levels (each class), meaning they can kill us in six hits tops.

codex_10.jpg
Well this sucks.

bg2_up07_171.jpg

Not looking good here. One more hit and we're dead.

codex_10.jpg
MY PRECIOUS LEVELS! I'LL KILL THESE FUCKING VAMPIRES!

bg2_up07_172.jpg

Yes, but not at the moment.

Death count: 33

Loading.

codex_10.jpg
Do we have a plan?

We do.

bg2_up07_173.jpg

1. Buffs. 2 Full plate mail.

bg2_up07_174.jpg

3. Profit.

codex_10.jpg
Mwahahaha, slaughter!

Two vampires are dead already, I forgot to screenshot Del kicking the bucket.

bg2_up07_175.jpg

The Codex can still receive two more hits and not die.

codex_10.jpg
I'd still prefer not to receive them.

bg2_up07_176.jpg

:rage:

Death count: 34

Loading game.

codex_10.jpg
Do we have another plan?

No. Fuck. We're going again with the previous one.

codex_10.jpg
I was afraid you would say that.

bg2_up07_177.jpg

codex_10.jpg
DIIIIIIEEEEEEE! Great job, Lilarcor!

lilarcor1.jpg
Told you I'm the best!

Again, I did not catch Del dying. Sorry for that.

bg2_up07_178.jpg

This does not look good.

codex_10.jpg
Looks pretty fucking bad indeed!

bg2_up07_179.jpg

As The Codex' Haste spells have been drained along with Mage levels, we need to use an emergency potion.

bg2_up07_180.jpg

With it, we are able to outrun the vampire.

codex_10.jpg
To out-tactically retreat, you mean.

bg2_up07_181.jpg

Unfortunately it seems the vampire took some interest in our temporary protégé.

codex_10.jpg
:x

bg2_up07_182.jpg

We get his attention back by shooting some arrows at him. Of course I forgot vampires are immune to normal arrows and we dealt no damage.

codex_10.jpg
Desperately needed: facepalm emoticon.

bg2_up07_183.jpg

We lead the vampire away from Sasuke or whatever the weeaboo fucker is called, but of course he follows waving his non-magical katana.

codex_10.jpg
All this is really embarassing.

bg2_up07_184.jpg

Luckily The Codex' Draw Upon Holy Might power is not leveled-based.

bg2_up07_185.jpg

We sneak up on the vampire...

codex_10.jpg
Good thing it's nighttime or I wouldn't be able to hide in shadows with my level 1 thief skills.

bg2_up07_186.jpg

...and backstab him for double damage.

codex_10.jpg
Not sure if :incline: or :decline:.

bg2_up07_187.jpg

And he's dead!

codex_10.jpg
:yeah:

bg2_up07_188.jpg

And we get no reward whatsoever for all our efforts. Was it even worth it?

codex_10.jpg
I seriously doubt that.

bg2_up07_189.jpg

Ok, it definitely wasn't worth it.

codex_10.jpg
1000 gold!? Fuck this shit. This was the last time I've helped someone.

bg2_up07_190.jpg

Good thing You can read this scroll, or we would be really fucked.

bg2_up07_191.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Hello precious levels. I've missed you so much.

bg2_up07_192.jpg

Moving on, we encounter Madeen.

bg2_up07_193.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I don't like vaguespeak when we're talking about rewards for me.

bg2_up07_194.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Maybe I will, maybe I won't.

You will?

codex_10.jpg
Why?

He pays up front.

codex_10.jpg
I will.

bg2_up07_196.jpg

Tolgerias is found inside the city council building.

bg2_up07_197.jpg

codex_10.jpg
You won't even tell me what you expect me to do? What kind of shit is this?

bg2_up07_198.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Yes, let's talk about the reward. I have some very recent bad experience in helping people who did not promise to pay me for it.

bg2_up07_199.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Magic item? Agreed!

bg2_up07_200.jpg

codex_10.jpg
So it's a bounty hunt? No probs.

bg2_up07_201.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Valygar Corthala? Sounds noble.

Yeah this quest would be better if it wasn't ruined by listing Valygar as one of the joinable companions in the manual to this game.

bg2_up07_202.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Right. So where's my magic item? Wasn't he supposed to pay me up front?

Oh, he will. He just does not know it yet.

bg2_up07_203.jpg

There we go. :smug:

codex_10.jpg
I like the way you're thinking.

bg2_up07_204.jpg

codex_10.jpg
This is actually pretty cool.

bg2_up07_205.jpg

Umar Hills are now available as a travel destination for us.

bg2_up07_206.jpg

Next stop - City Gates!
----------
Next time: we embark on a trip to Umar Hills and die a lot.
Remember that You can vote for future quests The Codex should undertake. The list... ah, fuck this.

Good stuff man. Cut it ouit with the capital You though. While it's expected and proper in our :monocle: potato language, it looks plain silly in English.

Voting for exploring the Planar Sphere.

Also, for the love of Bhaal, don't pay for the spellcasting license! Once you're buff enough, exterminate the Cowled Wizards willing to enforce their spellcasting ban :smug:

I never planned on paying those dirty peasants for their license. :smug: And no, I'm not dropping the capital You.

Planar Sphere is already underway. It is going to take at least two updates, though. I encountered some seriously murderous halflings in there.

Last time on Let's Solo Baldur's Gate 2:

bg2_up07_171.jpg

Oh yeah, this. We have to get that anti-level-draining amulet fast.

codex_10.jpg
I'd say!

Update #8: Hiking

bg2_up08_000.jpg

While heading for the city gates, we are waylaid by enemies.

codex_10.jpg
What? Action right from the start? Bring it on!

lilarcor1.jpg
Oh yeah, baby!

bg2_up08_001.jpg

We start by Horroring the attackers.

codex_10.jpg
Wait, I can cast spells in the streets now?

It's a spell-like ability, actually.

codex_10.jpg
I don't think Cowled Reapers care about semantics as much as you do.

Fine, they're not monitoring this street then. Now, get rid of that one guy who was not scared.

bg2_up08_002.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Ok, done.

bg2_up08_003.jpg

Before Horror wears off, we manage to kill all slavers except this one mage.

codex_10.jpg
Easily fixed.

bg2_up08_004.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Oh fuck dammit!

lilarcor1.jpg
Haha!

bg2_up08_005.jpg

The wizard dropped some spell scrolls.

codex_10.jpg
They're pretty lame, though.

bg2_up08_006.jpg

We also got some magic weaponry.

codex_10.jpg
Also lame.

bg2_up08_007.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Oooh. This looks promising!

bg2_up08_008.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I like this alot.

bg2_up08_009.jpg

This actually sucks, as it's both weaker and more cumbersome than our non-magical full plate. Also, You can't use amulets/cloaks/rings of pretection together with magical armor.

bg2_up08_010.jpg

I can never remember the graphics for better magic maces. Is it something worth keeping, maybe?

bg2_up08_011.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Nope.

bg2_up08_012.jpg

Moving on, we are waylaid by enemies AGAIN.

codex_10.jpg
How can anyone live in this city, with danger lurking out around every corner?

bg2_up08_013.jpg

We use Horror to good effect again.

bg2_up08_014.jpg

The mage did not panic however, and Mirrored Imaged himself. Magic Missile should take care of that.

bg2_up08_015.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Boom! Headshot!

bg2_up08_016.jpg

The rest of the thugs prove to be no challenge at all.

bg2_up08_017.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Renfield?

bg2_up08_018.jpg

You mean Renfield? Besides it's Renfeld.

bg2_up08_019.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Oh yeah, Renfeld. That's an even better camouflage than that Alucard thing.

bg2_up08_020.jpg

Oil of Speed. We like those.

bg2_up08_021.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Look, they had a dual-wielding guy. Helped him much.

bg2_up08_022.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I think I already know all of these.

bg2_up08_023.jpg

We need to sidetrack a little, to carry Renfeld to his Harper friends.

codex_10.jpg
You said 'harper'! OMG SPOILERZ!

bg2_up08_024.jpg

codex_10.jpg
What the fuck... I can't make five steps without getting attacked in this city!

bg2_up08_025.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Yeah, yeah, RAAAARGH! yourself too.

bg2_up08_026.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Coin? Neat?

bg2_up08_027.jpg

codex_10.jpg
125 gold... Really? Fucking cheapskates.

bg2_up08_028.jpg

codex_10.jpg
DAMMIT! Can't I really go anywhere without being bothered by someone?

bg2_up08_029.jpg

codex_10.jpg
If you're paying, I might be interested.

bg2_up08_030.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Yeah, yeah, later. Maybe.

bg2_up08_031.jpg

Back to the city gates. Maybe we can reach them this time.

codex_10.jpg
I wouldn't bet on it.

bg2_up08_032.jpg

We actually made it.

codex_10.jpg
Fucking yay. What now?

We can finally start this update properly.

bg2_up08_033.jpg

We should be able to get a thief level-up today.

bg2_up08_034.jpg

Our thieving skill have improved a lot since we switched from Mail of the Dead to Robe of Vecna.

bg2_up08_035.jpg

Saving throws are also looking a little better.

bg2_up08_036.jpg

Our AC is now -1 against slashing and crushing weapons and -4 against piercing and missile. Still needs improvement.

bg2_up08_037.jpg

Remember when I said I won't be screenshotting this part anymore? I lied.

bg2_up08_038.jpg

Bone golem? I don't remember us fighting one of these...

codex_10.jpg
Don't you worry your pretty little head with such details.

bg2_up08_039.jpg

codex_10.jpg
High Merchant sounds wealthy.

bg2_up08_040.jpg

codex_10.jpg
No probs. I have all the manpower you might possibly need.

bg2_up08_041.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I'll get there... eventually.

bg2_up08_042.jpg

Onwards to Umar Hills.

codex_10.jpg
Finally, no more distractions.

bg2_up08_043.jpg

We are waylaid by enemies on the way.

codex_10.jpg
:rage:

bg2_up08_044.jpg

codex_10.jpg
This Stinking Cloud should take care of them.

Yeah, pity we're out of Horrors, though.

bg2_up08_045.jpg

Half of them are down.

codex_10.jpg
Let's hope that's enough.

bg2_up08_046.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Damn, they hit quite hard!

Healing?

codex_10.jpg
No, I can do it.

bg2_up08_047.jpg

codex_10.jpg
There. Mirror Image. Can't hurt me now, suckers!

bg2_up08_048.jpg

Guess again.

Death count: 35

Loading.

codex_10.jpg
They got lucky. I'll get them next time.

bg2_up08_049.jpg

This time we reach Umar Hills undisturbed.

codex_10.jpg
They chickened out! Fucking Orog cowards!

bg2_up08_050.jpg

Contrary to city areas, this one is completely undiscovered upon entering.

codex_10.jpg
Finally, some real exploration.

WARNING: screenshots below (hidden under Show) contain a lot of dialogue which The Codex and I did not bother to comment. If You're interested, You can read it.

Why are we talking to this guy?

codex_10.jpg
I have business with him.

You do?

bg2_up06_114.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I want to buy a book.

You do?

bg2_up08_065.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I'll take this one.

I never suspected You of being interested in history.

bg2_up06_118.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Vellin Dahn.

bg2_up06_115.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Let me think. Vellin Dahn. Dellin Dahn. Dallin Dahn. Darlin Dahn. Dar?in Dahn. Darcin Cahn. Darcin Cohn.

I have no idea what you're talking about.

bg2_up06_116.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Darcin Cole.

bg2_up08_066.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Darcin Cole was your name.

Do You know this guy?

bg2_up08_067.jpg

What armour are we talking about?

bg2_up08_068.jpg

Skins. Blood. Are you think what I'm thinking you're thinking?

codex_10.jpg
Probably.

You are NOT completing the human skin armor.

codex_10.jpg
Oh, but I am.

We'll see.

Mimic blood? Sure, I can get some.

You can?

codex_10.jpg
Hey, when was the last time I wasn't able to find something I was asked to find?

Fair enough.

bg2_up08_075.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I hope I'll get paid for this.

bg2_up08_076.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Let's see what the town mage keeps in his pockets.

bg2_up08_077.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Oh fuck. Why would I want to summon THESE?

codex_10.jpg
Did you boys say 'money'?

bg2_up08_081.jpg

So, we embark on another epic quest.

codex_10.jpg
I'd say this is not worth my time, but quest rewards in this game are ridiculously high, so it just might be.

bg2_up08_082.jpg

We buy some ale.

codex_10.jpg
This thing is more expensive than Oktoberfest Special. And not nearly as well served.

bg2_up08_083.jpg

codex_10.jpg
1000 XP for fetching a beer.

Nothing says EPIC like bloated XP rewards.

bg2_up08_084.jpg

codex_10.jpg
DIE, CHICKEN!

What the hell are You doing?

codex_10.jpg
I don't know! I just suddenly felt the urge to kill some chickens!

Right.

bg2_up08_085.jpg

codex_10.jpg
These chickens must die!

bg2_up08_086.jpg

codex_10.jpg
We know what we're looking for?

What secrets?

bg2_up08_087.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Oh, look, a gem.

Nice. Let's move on.

bg2_up08_088.jpg

Exploring forward, we find this nice house to loot investigate.

bg2_up08_089.jpg

Look, a book. You can endulge in your newly-discovered reading habbit.

codex_10.jpg
I'd like to read your obituary next.

bg2_up08_090.jpg

Some stuff we can sell.

bg2_up08_091.jpg

Looks like picking up the book was a quest trigger of some sort.

codex_10.jpg
Neat.

bg2_up08_092.jpg

bg2_up08_095.jpg

bg2_up08_096.jpg

bg2_up08_097.jpg

Levelling up as a thief. All skills get increased by +5.

bg2_up08_098.jpg

Some magic...

codex_10.jpg
Acid.

...arrows. We can always use these.

Moving on, we encounter some angry young people:
bg2_up08_099.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Valygar who?

Don't you remember the bounty hunt Tolgerias sent us to?

codex_10.jpg
That mage guy? Didn't he already pay me?

Kind of.

codex_10.jpg
Then the job's done, isn't it?

Well... Let's focus on the attackers, ok?

bg2_up08_100.jpg

codex_10.jpg
These guys? No sweat.

bg2_up08_101.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I'll soften then up with a spell and...

bg2_up08_102.jpg

And die?

Death count: 36

Load game.

codex_10.jpg
Fuck, they're pretty tough.

bg2_up08_103.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I need to prepare a little.

bg2_up08_104.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Stinking Cloud should take care of this.

bg2_up08_105.jpg

codex_10.jpg
84 damage? This is bad!

bg2_up08_106.jpg

It is bad indeed.

Death count: 37

Load.

codex_10.jpg
I'm open to suggestions.

I might have a few.

bg2_up08_107.jpg

Like Cloud Kill.

codex_10.jpg
Good idea!

bg2_up08_108.jpg

They seem to be high-level enough not to die instantly.

codex_10.jpg
Skull trap should help them with this.

bg2_up08_109.jpg

codex_10.jpg
And fireball.

Watch out, Your Stoneskin is down.

bg2_up08_110.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Ha! Eat dirt!

Stoneskin...

bg2_up08_111.jpg

Stoneskin, I said. Fuck.

Death count: 38

Loading.

codex_10.jpg
I haven't noticed that my stoneskin was down.

Damn You, Codex!

bg2_up08_112.jpg

We need to limit damage taken in this fight, so we open by casting Slow this time.

codex_10.jpg
Good thinking.

bg2_up08_113.jpg

And then Cloud Kill.

codex_10.jpg
I love this spell!

bg2_up08_114.jpg

Then FireBall.

bg2_up08_115.jpg

And finally Skull Trap. Also, your Stoneskin is down.

bg2_up08_116.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Dammit, how can they still be alive!?

STONESKIN!

bg2_up08_117.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Right. I need to give them something else to do than attack me. Time to introduce some chaos into this combat.

bg2_up08_118.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Fuck! This hurts!

Time for healing potions, I think.

bg2_up08_119.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Aha! One is down!

bg2_up08_120.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Oh yeah, baby!

bg2_up08_121.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Choke on arrows, shithead!

bg2_up08_122.jpg

At least they dropped some better stuff than those vampires last time.

codex_10.jpg
I don't want to remember them.

bg2_up08_123.jpg

These boots look nice.

bg2_up08_124.jpg

codex_10.jpg
This weapon looks dangerous. I wouldn't want to fight with it, unless I was Bruce Lee.

bg2_up08_125.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Cool stuff!

bg2_up08_126.jpg

Giant Lynx attacks.

lolcatsdotcomp6qhtstf8ewm1rs7.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Calm down, kitty!

bg2_up08_127.jpg

It seems the lynx was hunting a deer.

codex_10.jpg
Whatever. Dead now.

bg2_up08_128.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Shade wolf...? Ok, this is new.

bg2_up08_129.jpg

codex_10.jpg
It's arrow-proof!

You should switch to a magical weapon.

lilarcor1.jpg
That's me!

bg2_up08_130.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Good going, Lilarcor!

lilarcor1.jpg
Of course!

bg2_up08_131.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Yeah, maybe we'll find something 'eeevvvillll' in this cabin here.

bg2_up08_132.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Who exactly are we looking for here?

Valygar.

codex_10.jpg
And he is...?

You forgot already?

codex_10.jpg
I'm not sure I ever remembered.

bg2_up08_133.jpg

Guess which three weapons Valygar has proficiency in? Yup, it's long bow, katana and spear.

bg2_up08_134.jpg

This spell scroll looks interesting.

bg2_up08_135.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Hey, it's a level 5 spell, which means I can use it already!

Indeed.

bg2_up08_136.jpg

Spears in AD&D kind of suck. In D&D 3.5 they deal 1d8 damage, which at least makes them usable.

bg2_up08_137.jpg

Look, a shadow.

codex_10.jpg
The shadow?

No, just a shadow.

codex_10.jpg
Oh.

bg2_up08_138.jpg

codex_10.jpg
More shadows.

These are shadow fiends, actually.

codex_10.jpg
Is that better or worse?

bg2_up08_139.jpg

You be the judge.

codex_10.jpg
Fuuuuuck!

bg2_up08_140.jpg

Worse. Much worse.

Death count: 39

Load game.

codex_10.jpg
Hiking is very dangerous around here.

bg2_up08_141.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Stoneskin should help.

bg2_up08_142.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Bring it on, darkies, I'm, not afraid of you!

bg2_up08_143.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Fuck, why are there so many of them?

bg2_up08_144.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Eat some cloudkill!

bg2_up08_145.jpg

Cloud Kill does not seem to be doing much.

codex_10.jpg
I'll haste myself then and just kill them the traditional way.

bg2_up08_146.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Stop killing me!

I forgot to screenshot the death screen, but trust me - it happened.

Death count: 40

Loading.

codex_10.jpg
Ok, I'm out of ideas.

Let me see.

bg2_up08_147.jpg

Let's scout a little bit first.

bg2_up08_148.jpg

And get ready for them with Draw Upon Holy Might.

bg2_up08_149.jpg

Try magic arrows. Maybe we can pull them one at a time?

codex_10.jpg
I remember it worked fine in the previous game.

bg2_up08_150.jpg

Not in this one, though.

codex_10.jpg
Haste!

bg2_up08_151.jpg

First we kill of the shadow weakened by arrows earlier.

bg2_up08_152.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Another one down!

Focus on the fiends, they're much more dangerous.

bg2_up08_153.jpg

We get lucky with a critical hit and manage to slay one of the fiends pretty fast.

codex_10.jpg
Ha!

bg2_up08_154.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Oh fuck yeah!

The other fiend is down and we still have Stoneskin active. Nice going.

bg2_up08_155.jpg

With the fiends gone, the rest of the shadows are pretty easy to deal with.

bg2_up08_156.jpg

Hiking forward, we find a cave.

bg2_up08_157.jpg

Inside there's a completely unsuspicious and unguarded chest.

codex_10.jpg
It's huge! Imagine all the loot!

bg2_up08_158.jpg

The chest turns out to be a Mimic. The Codex is held by his Mimic Glue ability.

bg2_up08_159.jpg

Can our hero survive until the spell wears off?

bg2_up08_160.jpg

Nope.

Death count: 41

Loading.

codex_10.jpg
I should have seen that coming.

bg2_up08_161.jpg

Holding Arbane's Sword makes us immune to Hold Person. Very useful.

codex_10.jpg
You can kiss my ass, mimic boy!

bg2_up08_162.jpg

We retreat a bit after getting hit with Mimic Acid for ~70 damage.

codex_10.jpg
Like I always say: when annoyed, cast cloudkill.

bg2_up08_163.jpg

Cloud Kill works pretty well, but it wears off before killing the Mimic.

codex_10.jpg
I'm not going to survive another acid thing, so I'm not going anywhere near that fucker.

bg2_up08_164.jpg

How about hidden?

codex_10.jpg
That's better.

bg2_up08_165.jpg

We manage to backstab the Mimic.

codex_10.jpg
I'm not sure how this works, but whatever.

bg2_up08_166.jpg

One another hit is enough to kill the monster.

codex_10.jpg
Yeeeeehaw!

bg2_up08_167.jpg

We get mimic blood (quest item) as a reward along with a diamond and some magic bullets and darts.

bg2_up08_168.jpg

Moving forward, we meet Madulf and his merry band of monsters, which means: more plot! 'Show' to view.

bg2_up08_169.jpg

bg2_up08_170.jpg

bg2_up08_171.jpg

bg2_up08_172.jpg

bg2_up08_173.jpg

Back to the wizard.

codex_10.jpg
Stop calling me 'boy'!

bg2_up08_174.jpg

codex_10.jpg
19K XP and a magic sword? I'd say it was worth getting a faceful of acid for this.

bg2_up08_175.jpg

The golem goes full crazy as soon as it is activated.

codex_10.jpg
More XP for me!

bg2_up08_176.jpg

Jermien is tanking for us in this fight, so it's extremely easy.

codex_10.jpg
Meh, boring.

bg2_up08_177.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Yup, I saved your ass. I expect more rewards of course.

bg2_up08_178.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Such a sudden and convenient change of heart.

Bioware writing at its best.

bg2_up08_179.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Wait, what about my reward?

Oh, we'll get rewarded alright.

bg2_up08_180.jpg

First, the sword we got is Ilbratha. We could keep it for the Mirror Inage ability but I bet I would forget it most of the time, so it's going for sale.

bg2_up08_181.jpg

Second, we loot the house.

codex_10.jpg
Oh yeah!

bg2_up08_182.jpg

Getting no less than two new spells.

bg2_up08_183.jpg

First is Contingency.

codex_10.jpg
Looks complicated.

bg2_up08_184.jpg

And the second: Protection from Normal Weapons.

codex_10.jpg
This one's cool.

Click 'Show' to view the plot.

bg2_up08_185.jpg

bg2_up08_186.jpg

bg2_up08_187.jpg

We get 27.5K XP for negotiating peace between Madulf and the village.

codex_10.jpg
Awesome!

But it would be boring if we did this quest the right way, wouldn't it? Our readers deserve more than that.

codex_10.jpg
What do you mean?

bg2_up08_188.jpg

I mean this.

codex_10.jpg
Ok. Works for me.

bg2_up08_189.jpg

First we take care of the minotaur. Some of the other monsters are scared.

codex_10.jpg
It feels so GOOD to inspire fear in my enemies' hearts.

bg2_up08_190.jpg

Next up is Madulf himself.

bg2_up08_191.jpg

Gnoll gets a series of arrows to the groin, but the monsters are no longer panicked.

bg2_up08_192.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Time for some crowd control.

bg2_up08_193.jpg

The Ogre is killed by a Magic Missile barrage.

bg2_up08_194.jpg

The Gnoll gets his final arrow.

bg2_up08_195.jpg

And the orc sufffers a similar fate.

codex_10.jpg
Ha, I rock!

The XP and loot reward from this seems inadequate, though, so we load the game from before attacking Madulf's gang.

codex_10.jpg
We WHAT? All this effort for nothing?

Yeah, pretty much. And no whining please.

codex_10.jpg
I hate you so much!

bg2_up08_197.jpg

Looting the Umar inn.

bg2_up08_198.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Is it even legal to set traps in a public place? I'll just disarm it so that nobody gets hurt.

And by nobody You mean Yourself?

codex_10.jpg
That's beside the point.

bg2_up08_199.jpg

codex_10.jpg
A wand. I like wands.

bg2_up08_200.jpg

We go back to Valygar's hut and this time he's there.

codex_10.jpg
Hi. You'll need to hire new Ranger Death Squad for yourself.

Plot AHOY! 'Show' to view.

bg2_up08_201.jpg

bg2_up08_202.jpg

bg2_up08_203.jpg

bg2_up08_204.jpg

bg2_up08_205.jpg

bg2_up08_206.jpg

bg2_up08_207.jpg

bg2_up08_208.jpg

We agree for Valygar to join us.

codex_10.jpg
We do? What about this 'solo' thing?

I'm allowing for a few exceptions.

bg2_up08_209.jpg

Valygar is probably one of the better companions in the game, very similar to Kivan from the first Baldur's Gate.

bg2_up08_210.jpg

Area completed!

bg2_up08_211.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Let's hope you're right then.

bg2_up08_212.jpg

And it worked. This concludes our brief period of cooperation with Valygar.

bg2_up08_213.jpg

I like Lilarcor's comment at the end.

bg2_up08_214.jpg

But before we enter the Planar Sphere, we need to prepare ourselves and rest.

----------

Next time: We try to explore the planar sphere but suffer some... setbacks.

codex_10.jpg
By 'setbacks' you mean 'deaths'. Am I right?

Yes. Yes, You are.

Why did you let Valygar live? Killing him and opening the sphere with his body does not change anything in this quest. Any biowarian npc=instant decline.

A Beautifully Desolate Campaign
This is going to be fun. And lethal. Which basically are the same thing.

Good updates, keep going.

Whoa. Another one of these trippy dreams. I must have eaten something unfresh.

bg2_up09_001.jpg

codex_10.jpg
It was the lasagne, probably. That cheese looked fishy.

bg2_up09_002.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Or maybe it was the vegetable soup.

bg2_up09_003.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Yeah, must have been the soup. I knew tomatoes should not be purple.

bg2_up09_004.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I wonder if I should be paying attention to this...?

bg2_up09_010.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Hey, a reign, I mean rain of fire. That's pretty cool.

bg2_up09_011.jpg

codex_10.jpg
No worries. I never refuse free stuff.

Update #9: Planar Sphere of Death, Part I - Bloody Halflings
bg2_up09_005.jpg

Welcome back, noble readers. We will be reaching Level 10 in Fighter class today.

codex_10.jpg
I had this weird dream...

bg2_up09_009.jpg

Our death list has exceeded 250 over less than 20 game-days, which means The Codex kills something once every two hours on average.

codex_10.jpg
Hey, a man has his needs!

bg2_up09_012.jpg

We've changed our spell loadout a little, including some of the newly-acquired magics.

codex_10.jpg
I'm pretty sure 'magics' is not a word.

bg2_up09_013.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Someone here has been watching too much Star Trek.

bg2_up09_014.jpg

And inside we go!

bg2_up09_015.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Let me guess, my first task here is to find it.

Correct.

bg2_up09_016.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Let's try this way first.

bg2_up09_017.jpg

Watch out, a golem.

codex_10.jpg
No shit. It's kind of hard to miss.

bg2_up09_018.jpg

codex_10.jpg
OH FUCK MY FACE! MY BEAUTIFUL FACE!

bg2_up09_019.jpg

'Clay Golem was immune to my damage'. Huh.

Death count: 42

Loading.

codex_10.jpg
Ok, what the fuck was that?

It seems that clay golems are immune to slashing damage, even from magical weapons.

lilarcor1.jpg
Inconceivable!

codex_10.jpg
What do we do, then?

bg2_up09_020.jpg

First, clad in Stoneskin, we confirm the problem.

codex_10.jpg
Confirmed.

lilarcor1.jpg
NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

bg2_up09_021.jpg

It seems to also be the case with piercing weapons.

codex_10.jpg
Great. What now?

As golems are basically immune to magic, we'll need a crushing weapon.

codex_10.jpg
I don't think I have one.

We'll have to buy one then.

bg2_up09_022.jpg

We get attacked by a thug on our way.

bg2_up09_023.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Fuck off, I'm not in the mood.

bg2_up09_024.jpg

We buy a Quarter Staff +2. In hindsight, we should have gone with the cheaper option and get Staff Mace (also +2), but whatever.

bg2_up09_025.jpg

We also use the opportunity to visit this fine merchant.

bg2_up09_026_zps437790de.jpg

And get an ammo belt.

codex_10.jpg
:yeah:

bg2_up09_027.jpg

Back to the sphere.

codex_10.jpg
You wait here Valygar. There's nothing interesting going inside. Really.

bg2_up09_028.jpg

Our Stoneskin is a little battered from the little test before, so we put a little more effort into this fight and cast Mirror Image.

bg2_up09_029.jpg

This proves to be a good idea.

codex_10.jpg
Die, pot-boy!

bg2_up09_030.jpg

With the golem gone, it's time for some looting.

codex_10.jpg
This is always my favourite part.

bg2_up09_031.jpg

We find mostly spell scrolls...

bg2_up09_032.jpg

...and some quest items.

bg2_up09_033.jpg

Overall, it's quite nice.

bg2_up09_034.jpg

This spell turns others into squirrels, making them much less threatening.

codex_10.jpg
Good thing it's not hamsters. They can be quite ferocious.

bg2_up09_035.jpg

Breach is a very important anti-mage spell, as it dispells some of the more annoying protections.

bg2_up09_036.jpg

We copy the spells.

codex_10.jpg
Earning some tasty XP in the process!

bg2_up09_037.jpg

I guess the golem was disar-

codex_10.jpg
Don't.

bg2_up09_038.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I'm guessing this completes my first task here.

bg2_up09_039.jpg

codex_10.jpg
This is so mundane it must be a quest item too.

bg2_up09_040_zps8c513222.jpg

There's one another side path to explore before we venture deeper into the sphere.

bg2_up09_041.jpg

codex_10.jpg
HA! Never knew what hit him!

bg2_up09_042.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Nice vista.

bg2_up09_043.jpg

codex_10.jpg
This can't be good.

bg2_up09_044.jpg

codex_10.jpg
This, however, is always good.

We get a pretty uninteresting (+1 HP, -1 THAC0) fighter level-up.

bg2_up09_045.jpg

Wary of possible golem ambushes, we scout hidden.

bg2_up09_046.jpg

bg2_up09_047.jpg

bg2_up09_048.jpg

bg2_up09_049.jpg

Solamnic Knights warn us of killer halflings waiting ahead.

codex_10.jpg
HA HA HA! Oh WOW!

bg2_up09_050.jpg

Also, we find some loot.

bg2_up09_051.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Another one of these neat anti-protection spells.

We'll be needing them.

bg2_up09_052.jpg

Moving on, we indeed meet some hostile halflings.

codex_10.jpg
As if goblins from the beginning of the game were not enough comedy.

bg2_up09_053.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Hey, halfings, I'm a nazgul! Boo!

bg2_up09_054.jpg

codex_10.jpg
This is almost too easy.

bg2_up09_055.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Oh, hi, you're late.

bg2_up09_056.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Ow! The fucker bites! DIE!

lilarcor1.jpg
Mwahahahaha! Slaughter!

bg2_up09_057.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Oh, I haven't forgotten about you.

bg2_up09_058.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Look, another one. Let's backstab him!

bg2_up09_059.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Ugh, feast?

Note: we actually managed to backstab him, but he barely noticed.

bg2_up09_060.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Don't move, willya?

bg2_up09_061.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I said, don't move, impdwarf!

His name's Togan. Also, watch out, there are more of them.

bg2_up09_062.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Bite me! I mean... Uh, fuck it.

bg2_up09_063.jpg

We retreat a little. Togan follows, so we kill him.

bg2_up09_064.jpg

Approaching hidden and looking for backstab opportunities.

bg2_up09_065.jpg

Kayardi's True Sight puts a stop to that (I forgot about Cloak of Non-Detection, of course).

codex_10.jpg
You're excused this time. I forgot we had it too.

bg2_up09_066.jpg

When in doubt...

codex_10.jpg
Cast cloudkill!

bg2_up09_067.jpg

The halflings attack, so we retreat and kill the fastest one who follows.

codex_10.jpg
This is looking pretty good so far.

bg2_up09_068.jpg

And then Kayardi appears and casts Maze on The Codex, which is equal to insta-killing him. Fuck.

Death count: 43

Load game.

codex_10.jpg
No fair! I wasn't dead and would have come back after a while.

We'll have to deal with this somehow.

bg2_up09_069.jpg

Second try - first we backstab Togan.

codex_10.jpg
Let me check if you have a spine!

bg2_up09_070.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Die, midget!

We manage to kill him pretty almost immediately, but the other halflings become magically aware of us...

bg2_up09_071.jpg

...so the keen plan to get them one at a time fails spectacularly and soon after the situation turns into a clusterfuck.

bg2_up09_072.jpg

And The Codex is mazed again.

Death count: 44

Load.

codex_10.jpg
We need a plan.

I might just have the one.

bg2_up09_073.jpg

We employ our newly learned spell - Conjure Lesser Air Elemntal (L.A.E.). Note the 'stun' marker over The Codex' head - this spell makes You paralyzed for some time after aummonning, while You're engaged in battle of will with the elemental. Therefore, it is best to cast if before combat.

bg2_up09_074.jpg

We also summon the Berserk Warrior.

berserker_small_zpsdc3be58a.jpg
Blood!

bg2_up09_075.jpg

Then we engage the halflings in an already familiar pattern. First, The Codex backstabs Togan.

codex_10.jpg
Gonna need a new kidney, midget!

bg2_up09_076.jpg

L.A.E. and Berserk Warrior keep rushing forward to attack, which makes controlling them a pain, especially that in multiplayer BG/BG2 You can't pause the game as easily as You can in single player (some time needs to pass after unpausing before You can pause again).

bg2_up09_077.jpg

L.A.E. is immune to non-magical weapons, which makes it a pretty good tank. Also, it shielded The Codex from Maze. The bad thing however is that our hero panicked.

codex_10.jpg
OH MY GODS HE HAS A KNIFE!

bg2_up09_078.jpg

codex_10.jpg
NO MORE PAIN PLEASE!

bg2_up09_079.jpg

No more pain.

Death count: 45

Loading.

codex_10.jpg
That somehow did not go any better than before.

I've noticed.

bg2_up09_080_zpsa5ab68a4.jpg

Next attempt is not very promising from the start. L.A.E. turns on The Codex after summonning.

codex_10.jpg
Damn ungrate cloud-fog thing!

bg2_up09_081.jpg

codex_10.jpg
How dare you wound me!

bg2_up09_082.jpg

Next up, Berserk Warrior is dire charmed almost immediately.

berserker_small_zpsdc3be58a.jpg
Kill elf!

codex_10.jpg
And people are surprised I prefer to work alone.

bg2_up09_083.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Die, traitor!

berserker_small_zpsdc3be58a.jpg
Argh!

bg2_up09_084.jpg

Without any sort of meat (or cloud) shield to protect him, The Codex is stunned.

bg2_up09_085.jpg

And mazed.

I wonder if we reach 50 today.

Death count: 46

Load game.

codex_10.jpg
Do we have a plan D or whatever fucking letter have we reached already?

We don't.

bg2_up09_086.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Oh for fuck's sake! Not this shit again!

At least this time we dealt with it without getting wounded.

bg2_up09_087.jpg

Backstab only deals 23 damage.

codex_10.jpg
Why does the world hate me!?

bg2_up09_088.jpg

codex_10.jpg
You half-people stay where you are.

bg2_up09_089.jpg

codex_10.jpg
And take some deep breaths while you're at it.

berserker_small_zpsdc3be58a.jpg
Forward!

No, You stay put. Damn Leroy Jenkins AI.

bg2_up09_090.jpg

codex_10.jpg
BURN!

berserker_small_zpsdc3be58a.jpg
Kill little man!

bg2_up09_091.jpg

berserker_small_zpsdc3be58a.jpg
Stop moving, little man!

We deal some major damage, including the nameless halfling warrior dead, but Kayardi, who is the greatest threat, is unaffected.

codex_10.jpg
Fucker.

bg2_up09_092.jpg

codex_10.jpg
HA!

Togan is down, as is Berserk Warrior.

bg2_up09_093.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Eat arrows, dipshit!

Entu croaks too, but our Cloud Kill has disappeared.

bg2_up09_094.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Only two spellcasters left and Kayardi is out of his best spells. I'll enjoy ripping them apart! Stoneskin!

bg2_up09_095.jpg

codex_10.jpg
IT BURNS! MY FLESH BURNS!

bg2_up09_096.jpg

Damn cleric.

Death count: 47

Load.

codex_10.jpg
Maybe I could just sneak by past them?

Do you want to be known as The Codex Who Feared the Halflings?

codex_10.jpg
Well, it's either that or huge amount of excruciating pain, so...

We'll try again.

bg2_up09_097.jpg

codex_10.jpg
GOTCHA!

Saving game!

bg2_up09_098.jpg

codex_10.jpg
ThereYouGoGuys. GoKickSomeAss!

berserker_small_zpsdc3be58a.jpg
KickAss!

bg2_up09_099.jpg

codex_10.jpg
ImWellPreparedThisTime. NoWayIllLose.

bg2_up09_100.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Cloudkill!

berserker_small_zpsdc3be58a.jpg
LittleCloudFriendKilAndBerserkerKillToo!

bg2_up09_101.jpg

Kayardi's combo of protection spells means we can't hurt him with any weapon we have, but he's not immune to Cloud Kill.

codex_10.jpg
YesInhaleThatShit!

No! LittleCloudFriendGone!

L.A.E. is unsummonned but we manage to kill Togan.

codex_10.jpg
ThisIsGettingReptitive. IMustveKilledHimLikeTenTimesAlready!

bg2_up09_103.jpg

berserker_small_zpsdc3be58a.jpg
ElfWhyYouNoMove?

Kayardi's second set of protection spells kicks in (he has two contingencies/sequencers/whatever prepared) and Cloud Kill stops hurting him, so he manages to cast Power Word, Stun on The Codex (whose HP dropped below the Power Word threshold in the meantime). And it was going so well.

bg2_up09_104.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Fuck, that was close!

Miraculously, the spell wears off before The Codex is killed. Berserk Warrior was unsummonned during this time.

bg2_up09_105.jpg

Entu croaks after two Lilarcor's love thrusts to the face.

lilarcor1.jpg
HA! He even realized he could not handle me alone, and called for assistance.

bg2_up09_106.jpg

Mogadish was prepering something nasty, so The Codex gives him some Wand of Lightning treatment.

codex_10.jpg
No flamestrike for you!

bg2_up09_107.jpg

Kayardi moves to lower-level magic such as Fire Arrow.

codex_10.jpg
Desperation tactics, huh? I have them now!

bg2_up09_108.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Ah! My poor skin! I'll kill you for this twice!

Another lightning kills off Mogadish, but The Codex gets hit with Melph's Acid Arrow by Kayardi. We start shooting him with magical arrows to bypass his spell protection.

bg2_up09_109.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Fuck, this acid hurts!

Time for healing, I think.

bg2_up09_110.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Eat arrows, dipshit!

Keep shooting, he must be really low on HP now.

bg2_up09_111.jpg

Yes! YES!

codex_10.jpg
:yeah:

bg2_up09_112.jpg

No. NO!

:rage:

Death count: 48

Loading.

codex_10.jpg
What... What happenned?

I think you died from Melph's Acid Arrow damage over time. Kayardi probably managed to cast it twice.

codex_10.jpg
Have you at least managed to save the game after killing them?

No.

codex_10.jpg
:rage:

bg2_up09_113.jpg

I did however save it just before the combat.

codex_10.jpg
Right between the ribs!

bg2_up09_114.jpg

berserker_small_zpsdc3be58a.jpg
Forward!

No! Stop!

bg2_up09_115.jpg

Fuck this shit.

codex_10.jpg
HowAmISupposedToCastCloudKillNow?

Just keep shooting lightning bolts at them.

bg2_up09_116.jpg

Ok, Togan is down.

codex_10.jpg
WhatElseIsNew?

L.A.E. is gone.

codex_10.jpg
Right.

bg2_up09_117.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Let'SlowThemDown!

bg2_up09_118.jpg

codex_10.jpg
BerserkerIsGone. Cloudkill!

Good idea.

bg2_up09_119.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Hey, Kayardi, catch some dispel!

bg2_up09_120.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Good job, Lilarcor!

lilarcor1.jpg
Of course!

bg2_up09_121.jpg

Entu chokes to death inside the Cloud Kill.

codex_10.jpg
Good!

bg2_up09_122.jpg

codex_10.jpg
OhMyGodOhMyGod! Help!

The Codex gets hit by Symbol, Fear and fails his saving throw.

bg2_up09_123.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Help! ImBeingEatenByFrodoBagginsRetardedCousins!

Funny like Insane difficulty means The Codex also deals double damage to himself (here, with Cloud Kill). On the upside, at least Mogadish' Flame Strike failed due to Robe of Vecna's magic resistance.

bg2_up09_124.jpg

codex_10.jpg
AAAH! I can't breathe!

Mogadish finally croaks and we get a hefty 14K XP for him. The Codex saves against Domination but is still panicked.

bg2_up09_125.jpg

codex_10.jpg
I'm melting!

And I think that would be it for this attempt.

bg2_up09_126.jpg

Yup.

Death count: 49

Load game.

codex_10.jpg
That was a very unpleasant experience.

We would have won if You made that saving throw against fear, You know.

codex_10.jpg
We would have won if you weren't such a dickhead, you know.

bg2_up09_127.jpg

Trying again. Backstabbing Togan deals 19 damage.

codex_10.jpg
:decline:

bg2_up09_128.jpg

berserker_small_zpsdc3be58a.jpg
KillElf!

Right away our Berserk Warrior goes hostile. I'm not sure if he got charmed or if something else happened.

bg2_up09_129.jpg

L.A.E. does his duty and gets hit in the face by Maze. The Codex is stunned, however.

bg2_up09_130.jpg

Togan is dead. This is not even funny anymore.

bg2_up09_131.jpg

The Codex is affected by Chaos, which would not have happened if he wielded Lilarcor instead of the bow...

bg2_up09_132.jpg

Mogadish Flame Strikes again.

bg2_up09_133.jpg

And we're dead.

Death count: 50

Load.

codex_10.jpg
That could have gone better.

bg2_up09_134.jpg

berserker_small_zpsdc3be58a.jpg
WhyYouNoDieLittleMan?

And we're right in the middle of the next try. Kayardi went forward to tank for his party, which would be stupid if we had any way of wounding him at the moment. But we don't.

codex_10.jpg
ThisGuyIsSeriouslyFuckingAnnoying!

bg2_up09_135.jpg

Entu stuns The Codex with Ego Whip (whatever that is) right after we cast Slow on the halfling party.

bg2_up09_136.jpg

codex_10.jpg
Fucking OW!

The stun wears off, but Entu shows even more competence by dealing 40 damage to our hero.

bg2_up09_137.jpg

codex_10.jpg
IAmTheGreatShrimpInTheSky...

And The Codex gets confused by Kayardi's spell with Entu moving in to attack.

bg2_up09_138.jpg

Which equals death.

Death count: 51

Loading.

codex_10.jpg
That mage midget is a fucking butcher. He has to die.

I agree.

bg2_up09_139.jpg

codex_10.jpg
PaybackTime!

So instead of wasting our backstab on the relatively harmless Togan, we use it on Kayardi, before his protection spells are activated. This is not cheating, because he's hostile from the get-go.

codex_10.jpg
This is not cheating because, at this point, seriously, fuck the world.

bg2_up09_140.jpg

After that we retreat behind our summoned tanks. L.A.E. even kills something.

codex_10.jpg
GoodJobElemental!

bg2_up09_141.jpg

Kayardi is immune to Web and moves to tanking position again.

bg2_up09_142.jpg

We cast Slow and after that Cloud Kill from outside his sight range.

bg2_up09_143.jpg

And finally Dispell Magic to (hopefully) weaken Kayardi's protection.

bg2_up09_144.jpg

Kayardi actually dies off screen.

codex_10.jpg
HowAnticlimactic.

Don't care.

codex_10.jpg
Same.

bg2_up09_145.jpg

codex_10.jpg
How's that flamestrike working for you now!?

We take Mogadish' remaining hit points with a backstab. All the halflings are dead.

codex_10.jpg
I'd like to make a comment now.

Ok, go ahead.

codex_10.jpg
:yeah::yeah:

bg2_up09_146.jpg

Looks like they dropped some fine loot.

codex_10.jpg
I remember those. They're gauntlents of ogre power, or something like that.

bg2_up09_147.jpg

Entu had a nice long bow.

codex_10.jpg
Pity I'm not using these anymore.

bg2_up09_148.jpg

Indeed these are Gauntlets of Ogre Power. We can't identify the bow just yet, as glasses of identification are out of charges and The Codex' lore is insufficient.

bg2_up09_149.jpg

What awaits us behind this door? You probably already know, but nevertheless, join us for the next update to see how it kills us we deal with it.

codex_10.jpg
Yeah, good idea, let's stop here. I need a fucking break.

----------
Next time: we explore the depths of Planar Sphere and fight many foes.

codex_10.jpg
None of them as annoying as these fucking halflings, I hope. Seriously.

I fondly remember those halflings. Dark Sun halflings are indeed nasty little buggers.
