Ok... So seems like the recipe is this:
  • Take a classic children's tale
  • Make a derivative grimdark murder simulator out of it that has zero connection to the original story, apart from the names of the characters and some other superficial detail
  • Profit (or so they hope)
I'm officially disgusted.

What's next? A Gulliver's Travels FPS?
I would play that. Instead, we have this:

Epic Mickey had potential of being grimdark, especially the concept art that was released long ago, but sadly it was not meant to be. The trilogy is not even finished.

This setting has some serious potential to be adapted to the world of Edward Penishands.

Consider the possibilities.
Should have been "pussibilities".

Trailers were great, but gameplay videos make me worried a little bit. There is something wrong with enemy AI combined with big health pools, making everything look a little bit slow and boring. Hopefully they will polish that part before the release.

New Lies Of P Trailers Show Off Clockwork Combat And A Dark Fantasy World

Take a closer look at the luxuriously deadly world of Lies of P in these new behind-the-scenes videos.

By Darryn Bonthuys on May 24, 2023 at 10:00AM PDT

Lies of P releases soon, and ahead of the launch of this dark and twisted adaptation of the tale of Pinocchio, two new videos for the game have gone live. In the first video, which is a deep dive into the making of the game, director Jiwon Choi explains how the project came together.
According to Choi, developer Round8 Studio wanted to create a game that focused on its Souls-like combat and story equally. "In order to leave a striking impression on our players, we believed that we must deliver an equally striking story that grabs their attention," Choi said. "It occurred to me that we should utilize a well-known story, and turn that story on its head. I decided to choose The Adventures of Pinocchio because it's full of compelling characters and events. But in order to make our game unique, we completely recreated the story into a dark and mysterious one. A story based on Krat, a fictional city, plagued with a petrification disease."

This tweak to the Pinocchio story has resulted in several other characters from the books being reimagined, with one notable example being the four black rabbits. In the original story, the rabbits are undertakers who work for death, but in Lies of P, they're reintroduced as a group of assassins. As for combat, Choi explained that the studio aimed to create a realistic and detailed action system that exists alongside an in-depth system of character growth.

For example, Lies of P has a weapon combination system that allows for new combinations of weapons to be created with different functions and characteristics. Because P is a robotic puppet, he can also replace and enhance his mechanical Legion arm, which Choi says will create a "much more dynamic" combat experience. There's also the P-Organ system that allows for different skills to be obtained, essentially giving players their very own growth tree to invest in and build to suit their individual preferences.

As for the actual challenge that players can expect, Choi explained that the studio has "minimized all variables" by eliminating a difficulty adjuster system. Instead, Lies of P will have several difficulty options, and as players grow in strength and skill, they'll be able to calibrate the challenge accordingly.

The rest of the video contains more details on the art direction chosen for the game, which pulls from the Bell Epoque era's rich and stylized golden age but puts a dark spin on that aesthetic. You can also get a preview of the technology being used to craft the game, with the game engine having support for Nividia's DLSS and AMD's FidelityFX Super Resolution.

In a second video, you can also gain more insight into one of the characters that you'll meet in the game, Sophia. Voiced by Allegra Marland (The Crown), Sophia is described as a guide who feeds P with information to help him along his journey. While Sophia is based on the character of the Blue Fairy from the Pinocchio stories, she has more "angelic" and "goddess-like" qualities, according to Marland.

Lies of P is scheduled to release on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S in 2023, and as announced at Gamescom, it will also be included on Xbox Game Pass.

Tried the demo. Pretty decent. This is probably the least janky souls clone I've played in terms of controls, animations and hit feedback. Also runs at a smooth 144 fps at all times despite looking good, which is a rarity nowadays.

People often critique DS3 and Elden Ring for being too fast while your character is too slow, but in this game it seems like it's the opposite. Your character is very agile and stamina drains slowly while enemies are shambling wrecks that need a second to wind up their attack and a few seconds to recover afterwards. So far it seems really easy. I made it to the first boss and got him to like 10% hp and that was my first death in the game. Hopefully it will get harder later.

However, the game is extremely derivative, as almost every mechanic in it seems to have been lifted from a From Software game. You have your weapon arts, the limited vampirism from Bloodborne (although here it seems like it triggers after blocking an attack), the slow backstab animation that turns you into a ghost while you execute it, the way parrying works, etc.

The only unique thing about the game is the puppet theme and I admit it does add a bit of uniqueness to the combat, because enemy animations follow a completely different pattern (an enemy can swing their giant weapon in a split second, but before they do that they raise their arm and there is a visible tell, like gears accelerating, smoke and sparks coming out, etc.) than usual humanoid enemies and require a bit of an adjustment.

It also sucks that you cannot bind actions to side mouse buttons, but this is something that they can hopefully add on release.

So far seems like a decent "get it at -50%" game.

Why is this in the JRPG forum? Just curious. Are all Souls games considered JRPGs?

Anything developed in a country east of Russia is a JRPG according to the esteemed geniuses at RPGcodex. Except when a game has an obviously western aesthetic like Resident Evil, in which case it gets put into general gaming.

You're right: it should really be anything east of Berlin.

Location
The Swamp
Played it up to the first boss and wasn't impressed. The environments look good, but every enemy being some kind of automaton got old really fast for me. It also feels slow and clunky after playing Elden Ring.

I've seen a few sites speculate that this might be the best souls game of 2023. I certainly hope not. Personally, I'm looking forward to Remnant II.

Played the demo.

The funny thing is that you can do rolls, but only when you don't have locked camera. When you're locked on, you have some awkward sidestep instead, which made me get stuck in enemy models a few times. It is especially bad, while encountering multiple enemies.

Exploration compared to souls feels poor. Demo locations were pretty closed and the roof section had many invisible walls.

Artistic style was not bad. I also liked the nexus music.

Generally, nothing revolutionary or wonderful.
