I love how people choose forget that Garriott basically pioneered an entire genre of PC gaming.

People are different at the beginning of their career...when they are younger, passionate, stay up all night working non stop to create something from a deep LOVE of what they are doing.

When they get older, they lose that. They relax, hire people to do the work for them, shrug off the details because they don't really love it as much...and just want a paycheck so they can take a vacation this year.

I have personally worked with people like this ~_~ Who have entire careers working at TOP companies....who have the resume to blow the socks off of anyone....and bring the passion of a wet blanket to the project. At a certain point, you lose that bright eyed passion to create amazing stuff and just work because...well...it's a job.

That ^

I love how people choose forget that Garriott basically pioneered an entire genre of PC gaming. Ultimas 1-7 were groundbreaking at the times they were released. Not to mention the Underworld spin-offs.

As I mentioned earlier, take a look at what guys like Molyneaux, Schafer, Gilbert, and Spector have done in the last five or so years. I'd be shocked if you can beat the shitty iOS/MMO/Facebook mentality out of Garriott at this stage. If he was so passionate about PC gaming then where has he been the last decade?

LB has written manifestos about the "Three Eras of Gaming" - Single Player, Multiplayer, and Social/Browser gaming. The very best we could hope for is something that combines all 3, which is like a lobster dinner with turd seasoning.

If you can bring me a younger Garriott from the past say 1992 or 93 and get him to design this game I would be interested. This isn't that man, its the man who made Ultima 9 and then numerous shitty MMO's.

I haven't forgotten who the man was, i kinda miss that dude.

Single-Player = Age of Darkness

Multiplayer = Age of Enlightenment

Social/Browser Gaming = Age of Armageddon

He mixed up the first two but I think it's a pretty good prediction

Divinity: Original Sin is what this game should be but... it won't be so just buy/play Original Sin!

But there's so much nostalgia attached to Britannia... I can't relate to a newer (yes I played Divine Divinity but it isn't quite as memorable) background as much as I want to go back to Trinsic or Cove.
Maybe LB should license the Avatar so that we get a proper Ultima... but to whom?

I'd like to get something out of the way first: :butthurt:

He's making a Pay2Win MMO in CryEngine 3 for $8 million plus whatever he got from his REAL "backers" (which he was also, shall we say, tacit about). Then he's making a singleplayer campaign for whatever's left of those $8m plus change. Sure there will be "a single player mode" but it won't be anything like what you'd expect from A SPIRITUAL SUCCESSOR TO WING COMMANDER!!!111!!11! :desu: :yeah:!!!11!:balance::kfc:!!1!!!:kwanzania::kwanzania::kwanzania: !!!! :takemymoney: :takemymoney: :takemymoney: !!!!!!!!! :takemymoney: !!!!!!!!

Same with Lord British's Ye Olde Totally Not Ultima Forever I Sweaereth On The Honor Of All Mine Collection Minigames! There will be the semblance of a campaign to cover his ass but mark my words, dear lord will it suck.

Larion studios is the perfect example of a developer that has learnt from their mistakes. In under a decade they have managed to create 3 games, 2 of which were complete shit - and now a fourth which finally appears to be a step back in the right direction.

In related news, The Banner Saga multiplayer, which was advertised as a "Free" addition to a "DRM-free" game, is in fact a World of Tanks style dev-hosted Pay2Win. Apparently even 700% of their funding goal was not enough for Stoic to add P2P or LAN functionality and miss out on all those sweet, sweet microtransactions. Thanks for hurting crowdfunded games, you greedy scamming assholes. I guess it's true what they say: You can take the developer out of EA...

Huh? It was always going to be a F2P.

For one, the words "Free to play" do not appear anywhere in the advertising. Even in his self-defense article the guy consistently calls it "Free".

Secondly, there's different kinds of free to play. Dota2 style where you only pay for cosmetic items, and WoT style/this one where you pay to skip the grind to the cool stuff. (To be fair, it's not Chinese style direct P2W or full on EA-tardation.) It sucks because you can tell it's a really good game underneath.

Thirdly, the guy asks himself "what should we have done with the extra money? Pocketed it?" Well how about using it to avoid the inferior design of a server-drm Pay2Progress multiplayer portion.

You can complain about renown increasing too slowly through playing all you want or about renaming your chars costing renown, but it most definitely is *not* pay 2 win.
