I always pick mage types because magic is usually fun and melee characters are usually boring and don't get enough abilities. But if you only get to pick one character it's probably not that great of a game anyway.

Were the kits implemented in any video games that used 2nd Edition D&D?

BG2.

BG2 Wild mage, not from this book but from tome of magic.
I see. Were all of them implemented in BG2? or only Wild Mage? and how did they define the difference between "Wild Mage" and "Mage"? Was it basically a druid?

No, I believe the only wizard kits are wild mage and specialist mage.

Wild mage gave a chance for a wild surge for every memorized spell cast. A wild surge could have many different outcomes, some beneficial, some not. There are 100 effects it could potentially have.

what do you consider the most interesting kits in 2e?

Shadow mage( Player's Option: Spells & Magic)
Shadow Wizard( Defilers and Preservers: The Wizards of Athas )
Elemental Wizard - Water (Tome of Magic )
Witch/Warlock - The Complete Wizard's Handbook
Wu Jen - The Complete Wizard's Handbook

Speaking of AD&D2E, were there any games that actually used the original 1974 D&D rules? and how many games used the first AD&D? I would imagine none used the basic and not many used the first AD&D, but I am curious about the exact numbers.

The first CRPG licensed for any D&D/AD&D rules was Pool of Radiance, released in 1988, the year before TSR released AD&D 2nd edition, so it naturally relied on AD&D 1st edition rules. Even though the first game in the Krynn/Dragonlance trilogy was released in 1990, this relied on the Dragonlance hardcover setting/rulebook that had been released in 1987 for 1st edition AD&D. There were 9 games total in the Gold Box series, not counting Unlimited Adventures, Neverwinter Nights, or the two Buck Rogers games (which obviously are not D&D/AD&D).

SSI had third-party developers create console games, Order of the Griffon (PCEngine/Turbografx-16) and Warriors of the Eternal Sun (Sega Megadrive/Genesis), which took place in the Known World / Mystara campaign setting associated with B/X and BECMI D&D and therefore utilized BECMI D&D rules.

D&D Stronghold: Kingdom Simulator uses BECMI rules for building a kingdom. You can get it on Steam or GOG.
