ok.now. you've probaly read my post below, and think my reverse-leveler -dungeon crawl idea sucks.it's an experiment, just a try at something new. anyway, after you finish the quest, you 'll be somewhere around level 8-10 when you leave the city to go out into the world and start to finish the game.I'm imagining this would add a bit of difficulty to a turn-based party system.basic plot--- a demon has losed his creations upon the world, in an attempt to control it.this is a post apoc world, but set in a time 2500-4000 years after destruction. As i have more time later on tonight, i'll explain more of what i mean......

races/peoples:
(may wait for another game for this one.....)
edgerunner- a kind of fallout type race, from the area known as "skydark", they are the only ones who will go into skydark, usually to retrieve or find chunks of metal and other pre-dark objects.Seriously debating a steampunkish kind of mix for these.they wear woven metal clothing.
Advantages- use a type of projectile weapon( gun if you will) with magically enhanced bullets.
Disadvantages-use of armor is severly limited, as they are fast movers.

Waterwalker- based upon the south american-central american basilisk( the jesus christ lizard, a real animal that can run across the top of the water)
Advantages- can escape from enemies by running across water, has a long sharp tail that can be used for slashing.
Disadvantages--can't use guns, because of their finger arrangement , a bit slow on land.

Andonai ---- the last of an order of elf-like beings, trained to be assassins and protectors of the crown.Went through a "trial by fire" very similar to the old shaolin ways.Temple and most of the order destroyed by the "demons".
Advantages --Very fast ( possible 2 hits per turn in turnbased)
Disadvantages-- Can only wear the armor that's bonded to them

there are more, and a deeper plotline, but i ain't got the time right now......all criticism is appreciated!

EDIT: screens of the town, actual, in-game screens( admitedly, very very early, not much there yet and no gui yet either) in the last post.....

What does "reverse-leveller" mean? The rest sounded dull, but an RPG that levels in reverse would be kind of interesting, like a plane from Beyond Countless Doorways. No demons, no cosmology, just a population made up of extremely powerfull people. A shared-consciousness vision of the apocalypse convinces everyone to that if they don't somehow become less powerfull, the world is lost. This sets about a chain of events where every man, woman and child tries to revert to mook-dom.

the lizard is just a thought, an idea( you know...some people do have 'em).

a reverse-leveler : you start as level 30 or so, and to get back up through the catacombs, the doors won't unlock to the levels unless you are below , say, the first one , level 25.The next area won't let you in until you are level 20, and so on untill the first ( upper) level. You'd have to keep a sharp eye on stats, in order to keep your good weapons and such.I'm not sure if I want to make this the start of my rpg, or a separate game....as I'm not sure many people would want to start out this way, limited in choice , have to do the first quest, etc.And I also don't think it'd work well later on in the game, either. But I do think it'd be a nice little time waster......

To answer my own question, only goddamn furries would want to play as a lizard. Are you some kind of furry prevert, Voltare?

Addendum: The idea of level regression is unnatural and stands against all that makes America great. Get out of America you commie.

I live in New Zealand, under a socialist government, and I can tell you folks around here wouldn't stand for that shit either. I suggest trying some kind of libertarian country.

I am. I would play as a sexy lizard-man and dress him in armour that shows off his hot scaly muscles and would use his sex appeal and whore him out to the perverts of other races that want a night on hot reptillian love to get money and lewtz and secret informationz.

I'm not sure about the level-regression idea, but anything that differs from the "ZOMG I getz mor powafulz and use biga wepponz and magikz!!!!!" template would be welcome, in my book. Otherwise, I actually like a lot of your ideas so far, Voltare. Except for elf guys, I guess. I'm sick of elves. You can do a quick-but-weak race without making them anything like elves.

How do you level down anyways? Do you gain negative experience points from battles or something? Eat Paintchips?

Because you have so many experience points, more than you'll ever need to survive, the governmnt takes some of them away and gives them to the needy - eg. peasants, n00bs, rats, goblins, etc.

to get to the upper levels, you have to fight creatures, and it subtracts experience/levels ----maybe just levels....the levels of the catacombs will have level requirements----such as the first one, you can't be better than level 25 to get in to it.

so you basically start at the end of the game and make a trek back to the beginning?

cut it up and move it around and bam people will say you're a videogame storyline genius, because showing things out of sequence always blows peoples minds

yes! you go backwards, through the game.see...the character was hired to cleanse the catacombs, and retrieve a stone taken into them by a " demon".The character finds out that the last demon in there, was not the one that had the thing. So, you have to go "back "through.(wonders what the first discussions about what eventually became mount&blade were like........)

Actually concept (basic) is pretty cool, but I am not sure about detailed implementation you offer as well as storyline. Its nice gameply touch that you have to think while levelling down to be able to get through -- but only if your level-design is good enough to offer the challange, then you have to think strategically, say. "should I drop this +1 sword and use this +1 dagger or stick with ordinary sword. And if so, should I decrease Dex or Str this time.." General idea is cool, but it heavily depends on your implementation and you may very easy fuck it up without proper attitude to details and level design, character system.

IMO you should make this game pretty short so people would play through not drop it halfway because, as stated above, its not that entrtainning to degrade instead of becoming better. Sure, it can catch your attenytion for some time, but not very long. Alternative solution is to do reverse-forward character system where you can downgrade and upgrade(your choice) your stats in levelups. I immagine making the system where not allways necessary higher stats are better to fight some monsters.

Example: you have savage-lizard-horse monster which is pretty nasty one since it slashes you great and poisons as well. If you boost up your strength, you deal more powerful damage to him with melee weapons, but you become fatter(bruiser) so its easier for the horse to hit you. If you boost up Dex, your are more likely to evade deadly blows, but once hit, you get traumatized pretty much. So, you have to find balance in your stats not to be over Strong and over dexterous since upping any stat carries complicated consequences.

Well, THAT would be game I'd give a try.

So by the end, your character will be a slow, clumsy, bumbling idiot who must face deadly opponents of mudcrabs and a half-dead scrib, your ultimate foe? Sounds awesome. :) Just make sure there are unique and humorous consequences if the character does not lower an attribute enough, such as being too charismatic or wise, leading to some ironic failure. I can't think of any good examples, but hey, I don't make my living on creative writing.

I think it will come down to the proper execution. Either you will need to be flawless and devise a good story and mechanism for the level-down, or you could take a satirical slant on the whole character progression and keep it funny and entertaining.
