GOOD JOB SLICK!

Because:
a) graphics are really important
and
b) any idea that is different or slightly original is shitty.

So his idea isn't that well thought out - at least the thread has more merit to it than virtually any other active oblivion/politics/sex/comedy thread here.

@Voltare

You may want to consider why the pc's levels are reversing. Is it a curse, or a spell? Possibly progressive amnesia, which would make you lose skills, or a wasting disease that progressively hammered away at your attributes, or maybe accelerated or reverse ageing. It wouldn't really make sense for you to be barred from entering higher dungeon level before you dropped to a certain level, as that's basically letting game stats ruin immersion - levels are only an abstraction to represent improvement as a result of experience.

depends but likely in the computer room
what a way to make an entrance *SIGH*...

Wow i used to think everyone on RPGCodex was pretty cool and Smart (cepting that idiot Volourn of course) but considering the thread author completely stumped like half the board on what reverse level design is even after he explained it in detail...

Well hey, look at the bright side you guys are still pretty cool :P

Wow, I was just thinking that. [HILL] and [WALLS] totally remind of the ending of Wizardry 7. Man, that's some crazy shit. Keep up the good work! And don't listen to anyone who tells you that your idea/gimmick is totally fucking retarded. They're obviously just being graphic whores.

Most RPGs can be judged for quality by how elf breast size compares to minotaur testicle size. So are we talking a 7:4 ratio here? Or something more like 20:6?

So.. you are using Beyond Virtual, which is basically Klik'n'Play in 3D. Whee.

Why all the mocking of this guy? Not that he sounds like the second coming of Richard Garriot, but geez... he's not a douchebag or anything.

My suggestion would be to eliminate levels all together...since they aren't really neccessary. Also how did the player get to the bottom--maybe this was discussed already but I just quickly scanned through.

To establish a baseline, maybe have the character start at the top, work down two levels via a 'secret' entrance, "Win" the game, then have to escape--but wonders of wonders, the original escape route is blocked. So now they have to work their way up the front door, and along the way there are ability drains/sinks that degrade the pc. Maybe something as easy as no healing, for example...or mid dungeon monsters that rust equipment.

etc.

While tactically interesting, I like reward for my efforts, so maybe the gaining of special intrinsic powers along the way will keep folks motivated?

The last American one was 8. And how was it screwed!? Seemed to me it got better and better with each sequel. I especially loved the the combination of wowee zowee Buck Rogers technology and medieval weapons in the last three Wizs.

The series lives on in Japan on the PS2 and I think there's going to be one on the DS. Only one PS2 game made it ove seas and it's really really REALLY good (IMO).

The idea is still being fleshed out, I do know that this is only the first quest in a much longer game.I have the idea that the character is a mercenary, hired to clean dungeons/catacombs, etc. A powerfull character , one with a huge reputation as a bounty hunter as well.... For instance, the second quest in the game will have you guarding a stagecoach through a dangerous mountain pass.( there will be a type of mounted combat here, but out of respect for mount& blade, it won't be "played up".)

Yeah, he is a lot further along than me. It is harder than it looks to make a game - mostly it is super timeconsuming and you have to force yourself to make it happen...which I am terrible at.

o.k.....i'm starting the area that the character/characters starts/start in. A small village outside a larger city.Thse are not test shots, but very similar to what the final product will be( more houses, tree's, more landscape and texture variance, of course will be coming).

Why all the mocking of this guy?

Because he seems to be just like all the other retards that infest game development sites with their inane "SO I GOTS THIS AWESOMEST IDEA FOR DRAGON BALL MMORPG!!!???"? Because I've/we've seen hundreds, if not thousands like him? Because his "game creation process" pretty much involves hitting a "MAEK GAMEZ" button on a kiddie piece of software? Because his "awesome idea" revolves around a level-down gimmick? Because reading his posts sure makes it seem that he can pull of a plausible multi-faceted/-pathed story befitting a good RPG? Because he just, all things considered, isn't cut out for the job?

they're mocking me cause they either can't come up with better.....

Doesn't take much effort, really.

or are incapable of doing anything except forum lurking.

Yeah, that must be it. You sound like you think you're a real and hardcore game developer now that you've got BV. Hey, guess what? You're not. Even if you'd manage to complete your "game" (though divine intervention, no less), it would still be a steaming pile of shit. Now go back to your glorified Klik'n'Play, pretend that you're making a game and shut up.

It is harder than it looks to make a game

Not in Beyond Virtual - where everyone can make a game!(tm) You don't even have to know anything about programming!(tm) All you need to learn is a bit of scripting, and you're on your way to a triple-A title!(tm)
