What are the most cliched opponents in rpg's in your opinion?

IMO its the undead. Whether its ghosts, zombies, skeletons...they are the most overused opponents. For a change I would like a series of fantasy crpg's to not have any undead at all.

The undead are overused, but the problem is that they're not used properly. Zombies don't surround you in great numbers, block off all exits and overwhelm you. Ghosts don't have fear effects, don't pass through walls or are immune to physical attacks. Skeletons rarely have a significant resistance to arrows, they don't lose members in fights, don't still come at you when cut in half or such. They all just have different stats, not different tactics and behaviors.

Undead even though overused and probably cliched could be so much better than they have been in many games. In old pnp Dnd undead, especially medium level and high level ones were truly to be feared.

There have been some challenges re undead but that only seems to happen when the game loads up with a whole bunch of things like vampires.

As for the original question I think the low level orc/goblin type of creature.

Undead come to mind first. They've been terribly dumbed down from their earlier status. I do recall finding the Undead to often be something to really worry about in Might and Magic games, and some early dungeon crawl game I forgot the of had it so that meeting any undead at starting levels would spell clear and certain doom. Now they're just another useless filler content group with an occasional "epic" fight.

There is a game called Etherlords which is kind of like HoMM crossed with Magic (the card game) and instead of undead it has a race of (evil) cyborgs and robots that look like undead called Synthets or something.

On topic: Animals and giant insects.

Undead would be fine if they were made as Hory described. I don't hate them as much as I hate animals and giant insects but still, in most games they're pretty boring.

Also, it would be cool if animals came to attack you when you were injured, crippled and bleeding, in leather armor, not when you're walking like a man with a giant sword and giant shoulder pads. Also, they should be packs of cheetahs or such, not weak lone wolves. And they should run when hurt, not just because it's realistic but to piss you off / make it a challenge to kill them before they run.

Animals are cool for the most part. I honestly don't think they are overused; their use is just right. Its only annoying with retarded animal uses, like giant bees as in Eschalon.
