Installing the game right now. I pre-ordered the collector's edition, and paid for it in full only to find Beth jacked up the price. :x

So I ran home and scrounged up the extra. I got my revenge when I paid half of it in pennies. :smug:

Anyway, going through the comic. Love it so far. Has this old school post-apocalyptic vibe. Hopefully the game will be able to keep that.

Gentlemen - this exhibit shows you a typical consumerist sheeple. A consumerist sheeple would bitch about the decline and how greedy devs and publishers produce bad games but the moment they will release their new game the sheeple will run and shell out any moneys they'll demand from him.

Gentlemen - this is why we can't have good things.

Ignore the Master Race shitflinging, I just want actual impressions

edit:

Anyway, installation's done. If anyone has any questions I'll answer them on my first break.

I'll already leave some here for after you have played a little, then. Does the merging of Big and Small Guns affects balance in any significant way (like, do stats matter for wielding the heavier ones? What about the dialogue skillchecks?

I liked Fallout 3. Since NV is built on it, odds are I'll like it too. I can have good things because while I'm not all that pleased with the gaming market, I'm not you either. What you're trying to say is that I'm the reason why YOU can't have good things, something I am immensely proud of. :smug:

- What kind of machine do you play on (CPU, gfx etc.) and how's the performance
- How many crashes to desktop did you get so far
- Does the game feel polished? Or unfinished?

Dual Core AMD. card is an ati radeon HD 5700. Game set my graphic options to ultra high and I haven't had any lag.

No crashes, no bugs, nothing that looks unfinished so far.

Does the installation feature some sort of bar that slowly fill up with time ?

Yes. IIRC, it's just a steam installer, nothing fancy. Didn't really pay attention to it.

Impressions so far:

Combat feels better. Probably won't convert anyone who abhorred fallout 3, but if you thought F3 was enjoyable/serviceable, you won't dislike this one.

melee/unarmed seem to have gotten some new options. unarmed gets uppercuts and crosses as you gain skill points (or so the message said, I haven't bothered to invest in melee so far, and probably won't this play-through). I've also seen enemies do a leap attack with tire irons, so i'm guessing you might be able to do that if you're good enough as well.

enemies are weak (still early game, but they feel way weaker than in fallout 3) and the AI dumb as a brick. I had one guy stop in the middle of a shootout and just stare at me. Another instance I charged at 2 guys in an open field with a hammer (i have almost no melee skills either). ran up to one guy and killed him without him noticing me. no stealth necessary. Other one started shooting wildly but to his credit at least turned in my direction before I sledge hammered his head off.

There's a lot of different ammo, and by the looks of it weapons too.

And of course, what the codex has really been waiting for :smug::

Oh, once you get a gun, make a note of how much time you spend repairing. Also, is ammo spare at all or is there shells coming out of every wasteland marauder's orifice.

Currently torrenting it because I can't be arsed to shell out 50 bucks for a game whose prequel sucked extreme ass. If I like it I'll probably buy it. Will post impressions later :smug:

Repair is changed in that you can take a weapon to 100% at any skill level, but you get more out of it the higher the skill.

Overall the way the skill system is setup is the biggest improvement over fallout 3. Between the lower amount of points per level, as well as every skill is meaningful in some way, between item creation and affecting certain conversation choices, you're really going to make sure you have a plan for what skills to level and when.

Skill books also have much more of an impact since they raise skills 3 or 4 points depending on if you have comprehension or not, and theres only a few books per skill. So hunting down all the books for a skill with comprehension will only get you 12-16 points into it.

I only just got through the tutorial and am in the first storyline town Prim and i'm really enjoying this game.

I notice the condition gauge for your weapon on the lower right corner has a notch/limit thingie, what does it mean? As long as your gun's condition is above the limit it will operate at 100%?

I disliked how armor and weapons' effectiveness in fo3 decreased linearly with their condition, this would be an improvement.

As far as I can tell, yeah, that's what's going on. Haven't done any extensive testing though.

Do you mean they die faster (good) or that they cause less damage (bad)?

They die faster. For the most part cause less damage too. Though I did a quest that involved fighting nightkin and they had reasonable health/damage, so it might just be because I've been fighting gang losers.

And you need to carry 2000 !@#$!@ caps to get into the strip. I guess I'll be abusing the load/save feature at a casino until i have enough. :smug:

OP, I am co-opting your thread for my own first impression from a few hours of play, you have no choice in the matter.

+: The writing so far seems to be adequate. Not stellar but nothing made me claw my eyes out yet.
+: Nostalgic music from Fallout 1
+: Animations look much better than the ugly jerky garbage from F3
+: Some cool factions, I'll see if there's any depth to them
+: SO FAR there doesn't seem to be any dump stat, per and agi do something useful this time.

-: It's a FO3 mod
-: It's an unoptimized laggy mess. My computer is plenty efficient, thanks. Haven't encou8ntered any bugs yet though, strangely.
-: Killing an enemy always results in the VATS slow motion nonsense even if you're fighting real time, FUUUUUUUUUCK
-: Some of the voice acting sounds like they hired bums and random bypassers off the street. The worst-fitting so far is the super mutant at the base of the mountain where you find Tabitha. Makes me long for the insane screaming orc men of FO3.
-: Mercs and raiders wear the exact same outfits in las vegas that they did in washington DC. Guess The Gap still operates nationally in post-apocalyptia.

Anyway, just wanted to voice my two cents before being buried under the weight of an avalanche of codecks critical opinions.

edit: forgot one

Maybe it's just on a critical hit, but I know it's happened more than once. First mod I download will be something to turn that off.

Yeah, just found that, I failed checking the options. Still, I have to wonder what made them think that was a good idea.

The new Fallout target customers? The one that would rather watch a game than play it?

I'd blame it on all the people who don't/didn't buy the kinds of RPGs you prefer. The entire Codex could boycott (next big accessible thing) and it wouldn't even matter or change anything. Individual sales are meaningless when you're dealing with millions.
