NWN2's fine, never crashed, both in pirated and legit copies. NWN1's the one that always crashed across multiple systems.

Also, shame on Jaesun for not finishing POD.

So is this the crash anecdotes thread now? NWN2 crashed on me "once" but it was because I had a corrupted MotB save that would always crash on load. I had no choice but to roll back with that one.

Grabbed this because fuck boxes. I played MotB before for the story, never touched the main campaign. Figured this was as good a time as any, while I wait for the Skyrim expansion to release (fuck you too).

Started a rogue, dual-wield and all that jazz. The campaign is... there. I don't know what it is about NWN that makes it so boring compared to even super boring Baldur's Gate, but it is. I guess it's the focus on making it modable rather than stand-up in its own right. It must not be THAT bad since I am 10 hours in and can see myself finishing it, but god damn spice shit up here and there please.

Say what you will about dumbed down tactics in the Dragon Age series, at least they spiced it up here and there with legitimate spices or amusing derp.

It was pretty bad in some cases on launch.
MOTB, I recall fucked up OC campaign a lot .
But I bought the steam NWN 2 pack and didn't crash much.
Took em months to fix, but it's ok now.

I think "in theory" means Atari is bound by contract to give them a cut, hence "in theory", but they don't and Obsidian doesn't want to pursue it legally for a number of reasons.

I think publishing rights for NWN2 reverted from Atari to Hasbro at some point in 2012, at which point the game was pulled from Steam and other DD. I guess Hasbro is bringing it back out again now, they're listed as publisher on GOG.

In theory Obsidian's contract should not be affected, but who knows what kind of bonus structure it had, and it might be a little muddied now.

Insert clever insult here
There is still a bug there that the Drow -1 Daylight malus is not removed in the Neverwinter city maps during night. IIRC, some of the wilderness maps have the same problem.

You do get few amusing lines of dialogue if you play as a drow. Though not enough to justify the -2 ECL. Of course, HARDCORENERDS edit races.2da to remove it since, hey SP, fuck the system.

What really bugs me is the ECL adjustment for planetouched when their abilities are actually identical to the the ECL0 versions, lacking the actual reason they were ECL1 in the first place (Outsider type gives a bunch of immunities, blocks "person" spells, proficiency with all wartial weapons and makes Alter Self better, none of which you get in NWN2).

edit: I'm getting errors when I attempt to buy it. Is GoG's processing Polish based? The error says "the card doesn't support international transaction" as a possible problem and the last time I got such a problem was for an international purchase.

I'd actually consider getting the D&D ultimate package from Gamestop:
NWN 1+2 including expansions (and MoW for NWN2), IWD 1+2, BG1+2, ToEE and PS:T for ~10$ (was 8,35€ for me).
I only had to find out that I apparently have to enter my name in all caps in order for my Credit Card to be accepted - if you still want to buy from GoG, that's something you might want to try, who knows...

Although I bought it mainly for MoW, I only tried ToEE so far, as I had no motivation to download the 11.2 GB for NWN2, but at least this one seems to be DRM-free.

I don't know about the entire bundle.
The bundle page says "This game requires the Gamestop App", but it might be due to not being available outside of it.
So far I've only tested ToEE, but at least this one didn't need the Gamestop app to run and I certainly didn't need to activate it.
AFAIK, Gamestop/Impulse has no system similar to Steamworks, so I guess it mainly depends on the individual game.

But if anyone knows more, please correct me.

My credit union called and confirmed that it was because of international purchasing.

Eh, the server that checks CD keys has been down for a while, so I think I'll just pirate it when I clear out my backlog.

If they don't allow you to copy the installation files/image discs on an external HDD, then you're better off with GoG.

They do allow "archiving" for later restoration without re-downloading, but the only time I tried that, it didn't work... :M
Also it still needs the Gamestop app to do that.
If you can simply copy the installation directory to an external HDD depends on the game. IIRC, NWN2 allows that (at least my old non-GameStop installation still worked when I did it), and from what I heard ToEE probably does, too, but I don't know about the other games.

If you are willing to pay 50% more for only one game, compared to the entire bundle only for the certainty of being DRM free, the I'd go for GoG, otherwise the Gamestop offer seems superior to me.

Just wait for the eventual GOG discount. It will likely get at least 70% off some time. They always do. And if you need it NAU!, just download the TPB demo and pay later.

For someone who has never touched either NWN should one skip the first altogether? Or play both?

I have bought both games, but played only a couple of hours with the first before being eager to proceed to the second. Some people here will even recommend skipping NWN2's Original Campaign and start right into the expansions (MotB, mainly), but I think this approach is too much of a crash course.
