I liked the Morrowind music, I thought it suited the game world just fine. He's a one trick pony, but he at least does that trick well.

Soule's Icewind Dale music is wonderfully evocative and haunting. But beyond that he's not terribly impressive.

He's not crappy, he's just uncreative. His soundtracks aren't bad, they're just bland and boring. Nothing new. The most generic stuff out there. That's why Bethesda likes him so much. Go figure.

That despite his music is full of rip-offs from masters.

Lyric Suite should jump now to provide actual examples of how he rips off others and still fail in a sophisticated presentation of upmost self-worth.

Nothing new or shocking.

I honestly like the main theme of Morrowind, but apart from that, nothing by him has done anything for me
Though admittedly hearing trumpets blare etc to announce a rat wandering past your feet in said game never gets old

that actually was the reason why I turned music in Morrowind off. I really hate games that start to play "battle theme" as soon as some enemy -sees- you. especially in the exploration game - you hear the music - you know you will get attacked. and especially if it's Soule's music. it's so bland it's annoying. considering that he uses shitloads of instruments. heh Arcanum used only a small bunch of violins and by the middle of the game I kinda hated them but I've never forced myself to even turn their volume down a bit. don't know why.

The problem with modern soundtracks is how, in most cases, they're so easily divided from the game. Ideally the soundtrack should be made to fit the game - the various songs immerse you deeper in the setting. Planescape:Torment is one of the better examples in this, especially the theme for the Smoldering Corpse.

When all the music is meant to sound epic, none of it does, and you can't tell - or care - what the different areas are meant to invoke, because it's all the same shitty fake Latin chanting and blaring trumpets.

A diverse soundstrack fit better to a story based game, because there the music is part of the story telling. A game with a lot of freedom is better off with music that is more in the backroom. Music that just helps create some atmosphere.

I would've wished to listen to the -original- first PS:T soundtrack. it had a dark ambient style - more to Homeworld/Stalker/ToEE thing. Interplay decided to replace it before release though but I wonder if it exists somewhere.

Battle music easily gets tiresome. They often try to make it intensive or something and usually it's shorter then the other tracks.

It's good, though he borrowed a fair bit from Wagner. Funny thing, once I listened through the soundtrack to The Dig and I recognized something. So I hunted up the IWD soundtrack and it became clear that both games had intro music (or a significant part) that was identical. Suffice to say, the composer for The Dig also borrowed from Wagner liberally.

Why don't they use an original piece by Wagner for a game soundtrack? Wagner is awesome.

Because it would give too many people the itch to invade Poland.
