I had no idea oceans and water life were even a thing in NMS. Wish I was into the game, but compliments to devs for still developing it.

It has been a couple years but there was a underwater-focused update but the major updates like NEXT and Beyond have added to it too.

Is there anything to do in this game? Rewarding exploration, interesting stories?
Or is it just procedurally generated crap to have your crafting and base building look pretty in weird environs?

Yeah updates have been coming very frequently since release and they add a lot of stuff. There's also settlements too, but back when I played there was no way to manage them remotely which defeated the purpose of NMS being a game where you are a space wanderer...
