I’ve tried using AI to automate the tedious parts of writing, but it wastes my time. I already have a rough outline in my head for how things should go but the AI keeps going in weird random directions.
Well, that's because the AI isn't quite there yet, lol. But wait a decade and I think you'll be getting a pretty cool, if rather shoddily written story

Extrapolating future progress from recent progress is a common misconception and has been parroted everywhere ad nauseaum regarding these new algorithms. It is more likely that the final stretch to make this really amazing is the hardest part of the process.

I expect to see this turbocharged averaging process to be spread to more fields, but I do not think that the blemishes will disappear anytime soon. Think of something like 3D printing where the advances made in the last 10 years are amazing but people are still mostly able to produce worthless plastic knickknacks. Actual quality stuff is still injection molded even if 3D printing has made prototyping easier.

Here are some examples of portraits i generated for Kingmaker using that tool in like 10 minutes.

It may be, but the last five years or so went pretty much in the opposite direction:
"We are probably decades away from achieving this specific resul- Oh wait, someone just did". On repeat, every few weeks or so.

And the guy who still thinks current AI-generated images today are still about merging google searches together has no clue of what he's talking about and it's a couple of years behind the curve. A closer look to what DALL-E2 is achieving should be enough to dismiss that narrative.

didn't some guys in iceland recently get arrested for 3d printed firearms?
That's old news. 3D printed guns without any gun parts (though unrestricted Chinese "springs" that work perfectly in Glock pattern magazines are used for convenience) have been adopted by actual combatants in war (Myanmar rebels) a year ago and factories are pumping out 3D printed guns in restricted countries. The signal can't be stopped!

The weapon is a mix of fabricated 3D printed parts, easily manufactured metal pressure-bearing parts, and readily available springs, screws, nuts, and bolts.
No gun parts, but the FGC-9 design uses metal parts that are not printed. You can make a slamfire shotgun out of two metal pipes:

Jake Hanrahan of Popular Front interviewed JStark1809 about the FGC-9 and 3D printed guns in November 2020.[12] JStark1809 stated that he had no background in engineering, taught himself CAD, and learned what he needed through widely available resources on the internet. With his rudimentary operation, he showed how to manufacture an FGC-9 in two weeks or less. He shot the gun in a forest and demonstrated its reliability and rapid firing rate. JStark1809 described his absolutist belief in the right to keep and manufacture arms and his desire to make the weapons widely available in order to protect human rights. Hanrahan described him as "one of the most dangerous people" he had ever met and criticized authorities for underestimating the power of 3D-printed guns.[12]

Der Spiegel reported in October 2021 that British financial services had provided clues on the identity of JStark1809 to the Federal Criminal Police Office, and they identified a 28-year-old man in Völklingen who went by "Jacob D." Police had raided his home that June, though they found no weapons and did not take him into custody. Two days after the raid, he was found dead in his car in front of his parents' home in Hannover. Coroners did not determine a cause of death, but they ruled out foul play.

It seems like the designer of the FGC-9 had an "accident".

Boomer vampire politicians are far more serious about shit they don't understand than they need to be.

There was some 3D printer guy in Texas that was under investigation and kept mouthing off to the feds. They ended up entrapping him with some 17-year-old girl with charges of soliciting a minor or whatever.

There's really very little threat from 3D printed guns when you can order all the parts for an AR-15 online and make the registered component yourself with a jig.

But some old fart with more power than morals hears "3D printed guns" and imagines people pressing a button and getting a gun out of a replicator from Star Trek. Then you wind up Seth Rich'd over nothing.

It wouldn't surprise me to see Stable Diffusion and NovelAI banned due to the seething of artists.

I doubt it. Corpos are probably gonna put artists and writers out of business by mass producing shovelware with AI

Go ahead and commission some new art for us that's better than what I or Perkel posted, since you're such a critic. Let's compare.

Let us know how much it costs you, and how long it takes the artist to draw it. :M

On a serious note, how good is Novel AI in retaining characters and having a memory of them, Dragon model tokenization still had problems remembering characters and sometimes changing the gender of characters all of sudden.
Just like current years devs then.

I can totally see Hasbro using this for their 1D&D VTT to keep players hooked without real group play
