Obscure RPGs

I have to admit that I don't like playing RPG before FO 1. But I'm curious, what else was released during those glory days of Black Isle, and years 97 or 96 that went unnoticed. Anything that has aged as well as FO 1.

If you know obscure RPGs that are worth checking out, post them here.

Hmm... the old Shadowrun for the Genesis is a bit obscure. It's also a great game, a western RPG that fits the codex definition made for consoles, and it comes with a dark setting to boot. The side-quests are random generated like in Daggerfall and there are actual different solutions to puzzles and other problems (Even diplomacy! Before Fallout and PS: T!) AND the main quests is non-linear.

Most old "RPGs" are dungeon crawling grinds so hardkore, they would scare off the Japanese. Real role playing games before 1992 or so are almost non-existent, and the ones up to 1997 were highly primitive and limited.

"Real role-playing games didn't exist before 1997"...

I would suggest Dungeon Hack, the Eye of the Beholder series (try 2), Dark Sun 1&2, Realms of Arkania (2 is the best, but I like 1), Darklands, and Betrayal at Krondor as 'classics' (each a little different) that have aged well (that I would consider replaying). Albion is another (just) pre-F1 game worth playing, and almost an adventure game.

BTW, check out Dungeon Craft. It's a remake of FRUA but it looks quite nice and is functional, I tried a couple of short scenarios with it the other day. High-level D&D combat always turned me off but if you want a taste of the old games there are a lot of modules that you can download.

As far as really old RPGs are concerned:

-"Eye of the beholder 2" (avoid number 3 at all costs). VERY difficult but nice story and atmospheric. Prepare some pencil and paper to make your own map.

-The bard's tale 3 (thief of fate). Fantastic dungeon crawler with an auto-map system. Also VERY difficult.

-Fate: Gates of Dawn. Grab yourself an AMIGA emulator and play it. First chicks with boobs (!!!) in a CRPG, and very diverse. TOO difficult without a walk-through.

Not obscure, but Dark Sun: Shattered Lands. It's Gold Box style gameplay with late 90's quality C&C and story. And it has one of the best settings I've ever seen in a game.

Hmm that's an interesting list. Never played BaK and the earlier M&M series (though I intend to sometime soon), enjoyed UU, but funny you should mention Robinson's and Anvil of Dawn. Robinson's had a great concept, but poor execution. If only someone would do a commercial remake of it, that'd be great. I'm no fan of Bethesda, but I think they can do this, especially since there's no need for witty dialogue or good storylines

And Anvil of Dawn didn't quite connect. I just didn't appreciate it's style - not enough action, and...don't know, just wasn't impressed by its quality

Anyway, I have to add Wasteland to the list. Very unforgiving RPG, but very enjoyable
