We are trying to make the game one-button friendly, so while there is functionality on right-click, it's usually ease-of-use functionality rather than core.

Yeah, fuck you Sawyer and fuck you Obsidian. This is the kind of shit I pay on Kickstarter for. I pay you to focus 100% on that, not devote 90% to that and 10% to making sure you can sell a tablet-version.

Inb4 apologists saying "man it's totally possible to do a perfect PC interface that works well on tablets"
Yeah, it is not like every IE game except PST was one-button friendly.

Honestly, I played my IE games with one button. The mouse. And sometimes some shortcuts, but just because the game is going to be onebuttonfriendly doesn't mean they won't exist.
Oh, Codex, you so easy to anger.

Edit: Also the above post by Sawyer wasn't the whole post:

While it's true that we're not designing the game with touch screens in mind, we have had the game running on a Fujitsu Windows 8 tablet and it worked fine.

We just spent a decade having every game limited by consoles controllers, low resolution and 256 Mb RAM, pardon me if I'm not excited to spend the next decade with games being limited by tablets one-button inputs, small screens and 512Mb RAM.

ESPECIALLY when they are sold as "PC exclusives".

One-button-friendly is not the same as one-button input.
Besides, what other buttons than a few shortcuts, your space bar and your mouse did you use in the IE games? Right, probably none. It will, most likely, be exactly that. Customizable, allowing multibutton-layouts, but not depending on it.

You seem to be missing the point. I wouldn't have a problem with them focusing on making the game one-button friendly if they thought that would be the best design for some reason, but doing it to make sure it can be played on tablets?

Fuck them.

Exactly, it comes to the same point of W2 shitty console-friendly inventory.

It was about time they make an actual serious fuck-up.

Where do you draw that information from? He even specifically said it's not designed with tablets in mind. He simply confirmed it also works on a tablet because someone asked.

IE isn't all that one-button-friendly, you can't see any description of items or spells without right-clicking, nor can you open containers or interact with stuff in the inventory.

Besides, it has been 15 years since Baldur's Gate, a time when we're browsing on Netscape Navigator by clicking on the scroll bar on 640x480 monitors... Nowadays every mouse has at least 3 buttons, not to mention all the other hardware advancements; why can't "PC Exclusive" games take full advantage of that?

God damn it, this is the same reason I stopped playing Fallout; sorry but if you don't make it literally impossible to play the game without both mouse and keyboard then I'm done with you. Wrap it up, Obsidiailures.

Again, the original quote:

The right button is definitely not core. Core is interacting with your world. So it probably means that you interact with the world, ahoi Sherlock Holmes, by right-clicking. Speaking, selecting answers from dialogue (even though they confirmed in the UI-update that you will also be able to select your answers with the number keys), selecting spells, attacking. The ease-of-use function of the right button will probably exactly be that: ease-of-use, seeing descriptions etc. I think they also confirmed number keys as shortcuts for selecting skills.

tl;dr: Keyboard is confirmed, left mouse-button is confirmed, right mouse-button is confirmed. The whole uproar here just stems from the fact that he mentioned tablet and one-button-functionality in the same post.

SophosTheWise: That's some cute apologetic shit you got going on there. Why else would he say "we are trying to make the game one-button friendly" in direct relation to a question about tablets et al? He's not saying "we're trying to keep it one-button friendly because that totally makes sense on PC, yay!" They're not just "incidentally one-button" - they trying, as in doing work to, making it one-button.

The whole uproar here just stems from the fact that he mentioned tablet and one-button-functionality in the same post.

Fuck you, the uproar comes from developers who keep tablets in the back of their mind during a design process they payed for with money coming from the PC-crowd.

I just hope you can bind RMB to flick the rotation of the party formation around, that shit was really handy. If they don't have that as the default behaviour I am going to go o___O

You know why he mentioned it in direct relation to a question about tablets? Because someone fucking asked if he could also play it on a tablet and that was some nice side-information.

Also, again:

we're not designing the game with touch screens in mind

Edit: Besides, a touch-screen-based game would not necessarily have to rely on one-button-functionality.

Touch screen implies Windows 8 touch as well.

I believe J.E. Sawyer said that Baldur's Gate on a tablet with a stylus would be cool, but Roguey would be able to confirm that better than me. I think Chris Avellone, Adam Brennecke (and Feargus) all said that.

Not paying attention to touch screen design doesn't mean that they aren't being mindful of tablet users. That said the UI won't exactly be super-tablet friendly I don't think. Unless UIv2 has all huge buttons and shit - which will be an obvious giveaway.

Wasn't there some Russian game conference in which Feargus talked about exploring tablet market? Not to mention Obsidian intends to make a 'universe' out of PE IP, and I can certainly imagine tablets and mobiles being a part of it.

I've been reading the Numenera player book pdf and was wondering (for those who have read it) which do you think will be more entertaining to play in a crpg, that or what you know of Sawyers current homebrew so far?

With the focus on souls and eternity I'm getting the sense that Obsidian is recycling liberally from its efforts to produce a Wheel of Time RPG. So do you like pulpy sci-fi with an emphasis on existentialism or epic fantasy with a lot of setting detail?

Though I think that exploring tablets with the PE universe could go horribly wrong if they don't do it the right way, seeing as the fundament of PE is based on of old-school-roleplayers and the like. There are a lot of good games for tablets and I could actually see Obsidian pulling it off. I wouldn't categorically deny everything tablet. If there's a genuine interest behind making a good tablet game, I can dig it.

 Some nice butthurt ITT while I was gone.

What would do you with a whole bunch of mouse buttons in an IE game anyway? They're point and click games. You do everything with menus and toolbars and shit. Even examining items can be done with an optional "look" button (NWN had that IIRC).

1,6M mark was Mac support mark. Macs, as far as i know, come with one button mouse by default.
this game has been designed as one-button friendly since the second day of the kickstarter; and not because of the tablets.

Overreaction? In mah Codex?
In IE the only button that you need to use is tab for highlight. Every single thing exept that could be done with left click.

This whole drama for a random quote that the only contoversial thing in it was the word "tablet" is looking for an excuse to :outrage:
