More of my impressions:
MINOR CHAPTER 1 SPOILERS BELOW.
Crafting schematics are too expensive. I've bought a few (to convert some of my leather into reinforced leather - or whatever it's called - and make myself a new steel sword out of endraga teeth) and ran out of money. After sorting through my equipment for stuff to sell, I noticed that Drowner brains and Nekker teeth sell for 6 and 4 orens respectively, so I've decided to do some hunting.
Since the forest is relatively monster-free during the day, I waited until 8 pm before venturing forth and after a few minutes of wandering I found myself running away from a pack of nekkers as they proved to be too much of a challenge for my unprepared witcher ass. Upon reaching the waterfall area, I encountered some Scoia'tael elves fighting a bunch of drowners. The nekekrs chasing me couldn't resist joining the party and (hiding behind a tree) I've watched a three-side fight unfold in front of me. Elves were outnumbered and soon gangraped to death, while Nekkers were not a much for drowners in the long run. Except for one Nekker warrior who downed three drowners by himself before finally succumbing to hits from the fourth (and last) one. That's when I joined in, killing the lone monster and picking up the remains of everything that died here. Loot hunting went better than I expected.
After that I've decided to check if there's a cave behind the waterfall Gothic/Risen style, and there was. Entering, I could already smell the nekkers inside and they did not disappoint me, showing up in a large group with the intent of clawing my guts out. Using the cave's narrower parts as bottlenecks, I managed to kill them one by one, using four of five witcher sings in the process (sorry, Axii, I'm not a fan of mind control) and moved deeper underground. After finding and looting some corpses along with killing some leftover nekkers I encountered a completely new type of monster - a corpse eater. Overconfident at taking ona single opponent I attacked it head on and was clawed to death in an instant. Second approach was a more careful "wait until it gets close, knock it down with Aard, jump in, strong slash, jump out" and worked much better.
I emerged from the cave when the sun was already rising. Instead of returning straight to town, I turned another way and soon found myself among ruins of an ancient elven bathhouse. Beautiful place, really.

tl;dr: but crafting schematics are too expensive.
