Most of the weapons in the game would be rendered useless if there was any horse combat. You can't fight a mounted horseman with a dagger, axe or even a longsword. You'd need a halberd, zweihander or a pike. Oblivion isn't that kind of game.

It can be, but that's up to the modders.

The whole 'Why didn't they put in horse combat' thing is a complete furphy, and undermines real criticism of Bethesda.

Horse combat is only demanded since Bethesda decided to put in horses. I wish the more intelligent people here, the ones who can level more relevant arguments (ie cutting back of skills, factions, classes) would just shut up about the bloody horse combat.

For fucks sake, it ought to be obvious to everyone how much freaking extra work horse combat would require to implement. And yet I see many of the same people who complain about the undue emphasis on action also demanding more of it in the form of horse bloody combat.

HORSE COMBAT IS NOT THE ISSUE. CUTTING OF SKILLS, FACTIONS AND DECISION MAKING IS THE ISSUE.

Some people here know nothing of priorities. They'll cry over the tearing of an expensive shirt when a man is shot with a gun.

Weren't crossbows also effective against cavalry...? Oh right.
During the crusades crossbowmen would march backward with their stuffed shirts full of arrows from the Muslim light-cavalry without a care in the world (other than dying of thirst, but that's a different story). But a cross-bowmen is just going to get run down by an armored lance-wielding knight. Really any kind of armored knight with a melee weapon. Of course, back in those days heavy infantry was generally so crappy that they tended to run away from heavy cavalry which invariably results in death. That's why some armies didn't really bother with heavy infantry and just had their well trained heavy cavalry dismount to take on enemy heavy cavalry (this worked over and over and over and over and over again during the 100 years war but England was just too tiny a country to do anything to France other than steal and break a bunch of stuff).

HORSE COMBAT IS NOT THE ISSUE. CUTTING OF SKILLS, FACTIONS AND DECISION MAKING IS THE ISSUE.

Its a issue because it shows the sheer stupidity of gameplay implementation.

Ridding in WoW is useful because there is no "map travel" (well for most classes) and so ridding is done to help cross maps, expecialy when no air travel exists.

The problem in Oblivion is that map travel exists, at any point a player can without any cost travel to any place on the map, even if that requires the player to "uncover it", ridding is useless.

We have been over skills and fractions, decision making was never much strong in TES anyway so I doubt you see anyone saying "dumb down" to something that was always like that.

You can't just travel to any place on the map at any time. You can only travel to places you have been. And not in the middle of battle.

Anyway - what does that have to do with horse combat?

Arguing 'A bad thing about Oblivion is that there is no horse combat' is complaining about something that wouldn't be an issue if they hadn't decided to put horses back in the first place. It's not something they took out (DF's horse combat really can't count), whereas skills and factions are.

Re decisions - there were more crucial ones in Daggerfall because of all the alternative MQ paths. Unlike MW's one-path MQ. Not to mention the decisions as to which guilds to join since in Dagger and MW you couldn't join them all unlike Oblivion.

Here: compare. Daggerfalls' MQ:

I like it when people start arguing about the argument itself.

No! Don't argue about that! Argue about the other stuff that sucks!
