Was really surprised to see this. The leak list and the timeline of releases had me thinking the what was listed there as ONIMUSHA NEW WORK had become Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess somewhere along its development cycle. But it turns out that new Onimusha game was still happening.

It’s a little later than they were originally planning

fuck yes Onimusha is back

hopefully they don't make it a Soulslike and instead kept it's own gameplay

I doubt it ends up playing like a Souls game. It probably stay functioning like you’d expect an Onimusha game too with some more timed button press combos like Devil May Cry has.

Given its Resident Evil origins, I do wonder somewhat if they bring over some Resident Evil 6 stuff, like that game’s counter system.

Please don't tell me this is another soulslike game similar to Sekiro etc...
If so I am so done with modern gaming. Is it such a crime against humanity to use the gameplay from 1-4? BORING!

I remember enjoying the original and Onimusha 2 on release. Onimusha 3 didn't appeal to me because of the setting, and I didn't pick up 4 because I didn't play 3.

It's really pretty much impossible to tell much about the gameplay from that trailer other than what looks like an execution finishing move. I'll wait until something more informative is released before deciding if I'm interested in this or not. At least it doesn't look like it's set in Paris.

Now I wonder if Pragmatica is still alive.

Is the first game cool?

it's an old game so temper your expectation, older Onimusha games is just old ps2 action game. You mostly block, dodge attack by moving around (instead of DODGE ROLLS), and attack normally. IIRC starting with Onimusha 3 and 4 they also have parry for big damage.

They are fun game, but not really something that you would consider "peak action combat" compared to like, say DMC series. One of the biggest appeal of the series is essentially "What if Sengoku Japan, but with fantasy and demons"? I would pretty much say that Onimusha setting wise heavily inspires the likes of NiOh and Wu Long

So besides combat the game also has a focus on other elements like exploration, puzzles and story?
I don't know why everyone's beating around the bush but it's pretty much a more action-y Resident Evil 1-CV taking place in Japan. Fixed camera angles, tank controls and puzzles. Haven't played any of the sequels but that's the vibe I got from the first game. Gameplay of the sequel looks similar too.

Yeah, Onimusha is an Action Adventure game like Resident Evil is, only it’s a more action oriented melee focused game.

If you play the first one I’d suggest playing the updated Xbox version Genma Onimusha.

Hmm... maybe? It's a fun series, but I'll have to take a wait and see approach on this one.

There is puzzle but imo not on the level of Resident Evil? They are mostly simple. And yeah bear guy is correct. The only Onimusha without tank control I think is the last one (Dawn of Dream)
Onimusha 3 has both tank and normal options. The latter is best for exploring but in combat you want to use tank.

I've played 1-4. So basically all of them. They're a mix of combat (and accompanying resource management), puzzles, a little exploration, and unique to the fourth (and best) game mainly, secrets and RPG systems.

First game: Samurai action-adventure with a splash of Resident Evil...but not good. The combat is basic and not particularly challenging, the secondary gameplay elements are not...in their element yet. Some OK puzzles. Bland music. OK at best level design. Stylistically it is cool as most capcom games were back then, but it was no match for Resident Evil and Devil May Cry. Every aspect of the game feels like there's something more missing, but it's not bad.

Second game: probably the most representative of the first three games. Samurai action adventure with a little more of a complete vision and higher production values but still ultimately not that good. Close to classic capcom quality, but not quite. I would recommend maybe playing this game as an intro if you don't mind it not being a top-quality game (7.5/10 maybe?), then jump right to 4.

Third game: Stars a french actor, time travel and is half set in modern day france, half in fuedal japan...because why not I guess. It's a toss-up whether this or the second is the best of the original trilogy. Production values are higher once again with some pretty stunning cutscenes and levels. Gameplay is barely changed from the second game, but there's minor improvements and additions. The main difference is two distinct playable characters but this only injects variety, not mechanical or systemic depth. Better than nothing changed nonetheless.

Fourth game, my personal favorite: production values (budget) is reduced slightly from the third game, or at least it feels that way as there's less crazy pre-rendered CGI, and the overall more serious tone of the first three games is dropped a little in favor of charming Japanese goofiness at times, but gameplay-wise it's top-form for the series with more on offer than ever before. Fairly extensive RPG systems, 6 playable characters make up your party to build, and actually executed in a fun and enjoyable way (rare for action games), puzzles and secrets galore with the puzzles being more interesting than ever, decent level design mostly, a pretty good soundrack I think as a series first (I don't remember a single track from the first 3 games sticking with me). lots of bossfights...the only catch is the second half of the game devolves into chain critical hit spam unfortunately. Though this does not apply to bosses at least. A solid 8/10 and one of my top ten PS2 titles. And most overlooked. Release date was 2006, when the next (awful) gen of consoles was now the focus.

Nah, I like souls but it's facts. In the late 90s and early 2000s, there was TONS of styles of hardcore hack n slash action game, mostly coming out of Japan but not always (e.g Severance). Nowadays everything is a shameless souls clone (and before that, godawful batman combat clone). Souls clone is a better alternative than most braindead AAA trite, but it's decline from old standards to be so homogeneous and shameless (as usual). Ninja Gaiden was its own thing. DMC was its own thing. Castlevania was its own thing. Onimusha was its own thing. Even the overrated God of War was its own thing. These games and then some. Most ranking from half-way decent to great. Now everything either sucks bad, or is a souls clone with minimal divergence from the formula.

Every fucking action RPG being soulslike is shit decline that even though you can objectively say Souls has better gameplay it's plainly refreshing not having to play another half baked clone

The problem is every single Action RPG Dev are now cloning Souls again with few that's not a Soulslike flopping hard (that Atlas Fallen game by the Surge team)

Yeah, I fully expect some studios to copy/draw inspiration from Souls but they copy it mechanically almost wholesale, even the less favorable aspects like OK at best RPG systems. None that I tried even attempted to build on the formula, maybe only one mechanic, and many miss what made souls great in the first place, such as good level design. It's like they completely missed the old school action game boat....which, well shouldn't be surprising. Many missed the glory of 90s early/2000s Japan.

It's the typical bandwagoning bullshit that a lot of studios do whenever a more innovative game comes along and turns into a big hit (hence the everincreasing "-like" subgenres).
