Yep, I actually have the screenshots for the next three missions ready. I just need to sort them, do the writeup and upload it to photobucket. The writeup still takes the longest, unfortunately, but I'm getting the hang of it.

Debriefing
Pretty straightforward mission. We were pressed for time, so no secondaries were taken this time.
As you see, ruskie recon is pretty damn sneaky, so it is important to protect the vital objectives.
The enemy air presence was not too much of a threat, but we were able to chase them off before they did any real damage.
Enamy aircraft just loves to damage our movement ability, which means we wither lose one turn immediately, or hobble along slowing the whole task force.
The AA didn't get to take any shots at the enemy aircraft this time, but I actually took a few random potshots at the bunker. The result wasn't stellar at range 2, but the 88 can be fearsome vs tanks when firing right next to them.


This is not over yet, moar updates incoming right after this one.

The western bank is almost indisputably ours. The lone bunker is not a threat.
Gondolin scouts to the south, securing the southern passage to ambush any reinforcements.
The eastern bank is protected by infantry and bunkers. Unsupported.
This will take a while, but there won't be any problems.
There is also a juicy secondary objective to the northeast.

Debrief
Went easier than I thought.
The fighting was intense, but ultimately the objectives were real close and conveniently located.

Yeah, we killed our first KV. Came down pretty fast. Bombers are our best friends when it comes to that. There's more when that one came from though, so I'll considering grooming us another stuka.

As you prolly saw, the whole air combat thing is really random. A pity we only have one fighter pilot, that would help a lot, cause running down enamy aircraft on the way home really allows for a pest free blitzing environment.

Unfortunately, our sole recon unit does not deliver. This is partially due to Gondolin getting the shitty end of the stick with promotions. Well, there were other priorities. Promoting him to lev.4 will help, as he'll get a special order that greatly increases spotting range. We will also consider picking up another recon team.

I'll give you the sitrep for the next scenario and I'm done for the day.

Anyways, sitrep.
Our objective is to move 8 units to the designated area. That's a lot. We'll need all the speed we can get.
Good thing we needn't capture or hold anything along the way.
There are two routes we can use. Both lead through Uryupinsk, which also has a convenient airfield nearby. Then we'll decide. The wooded area to the north looks a bit longer, and comes with the risk of ambushes.
The southern route leads thorugh a secondary objective, which is always good.
Unfortunately, if we take it, I fear that we may not have enough time for a major victory.

The plan is thus, capture Uryupinsk, than send out scouts to decide the route. If we take the woods, I'll leave a small task force behind to secure the objective down south. Once we push the 8 units, we'll have all the time in the world and we'll use Luftwaffe support as they cannot mexe into the exit hex.

You update faster than I can comment. And I wanted to.

During a scenario or campaign game, leaders have a chance of being awarded a Leader
Special whenever his unit takes or deals damage, and a greater chance whenever it elimi-
nates an enemy unit. PANZER GENERAL III SCORCHED EARTH keeps track of each leader’s kills by
class. A Leader Special can also be granted by triggered events such as capturing a particu-
lar objective.

And Leader survival after unit death is 1/3.

Interesting facts:
Carius got "his" (was a loader back then) 38t frontally penetrated by a 37mm AT gun in 41. Radiooperator lost his arm. Krew survived. So screenies liek the one with PzIII vs 76 cm AT are funny.

No one wanted to drive captured T34s after 2 of them got blown up by mistake at night.

Yeah, I recall that the manual said something about damage and kills, but the thing is, in practice it feels utterly random. Or the formula is not that straightforward, maybe the circumstances count as well, as for example arty seems to get the medals pretty fast for using reserve fire.

No one wanted to drive captured T34s after 2 of them got blown up by mistake at night.
I thought about incorporating it somehow in the intermission chatter, but unfortunately, we'll gonna need that extra armor.

Which means it can take a beating and deal much more pain than you'd expect.

We're in a bit of a mess here. While we move as fast as we can, the ruskies are hot on our trail.
They systhematically take back whatever we've managed to capture. Doesn't matter though, all the potato was taken anyway.

We're running short on turns. As you can see, the northern approach got delayed for a bit. And they need two more units at the objective.
I'm hoping that we can quickly take the airfield so that the paratroopers gain a bit more operating range. The siege equipment will then pin down the enemy defenses at the town.

We may sill be able to pull a major victory out of it, depending on the resistance at the target location.

To make matters worse, our aircraft are harassed by the enemy.

Debrief

Generally speaking, I always sucked at the move X units to exit area missions, especially the ruskie missions where you had to ship like 12 units this way. And conduct a search&destroy along the way.
But enough of the bitching.

It was a close call this time. Paradropping Azira to assist the siege was one obvious mistake, that didn't contribute much and I would be better off moving him to the NE airfield.
From there, he could probably just paradrop to the objective.

Mobile artillery didn't work too good too. The pitiful range means less opportunity fire, you don't have to waste actions to deploy, but you waste some anyway on maneuvering.
It seems that

The lack of AA also did hurt the northern advance. One fighter just wasn't enough for the job. Serrated would be much more useful had I taken him through the woods.

All in all, the requirements were pretty steep, so I'm glad we did how we did. The multiple tank encounters were also tough,
but that's a taste of things to come.

With hidsight, I might have packed half of our guys to recon trucks and just blitzed across. Will have to try it some other time.

And mistake or not, being paradropped into the action is always a high, as long as at least some of the company survives the drop. :smug: :thumbsup:

All right, about them commendations.
The first one is always the same and is unit-specific:

(o)All infantry gets the "Tactician"special, which means when attacking it will always be in close combat, regardless of terrain and entrenchment.
This makes infantry awesum as it naturally has the highest close combat skill of all classess. Also, in close combat the enemy's close combat value is what counts, regardless of any other defense. And if it's not infantry, it will be a pretty low value (f.e. heavy tanks can have 2-3).

(o)Tanks get the Blitz special. In 3D assault it used to extend their movemnt range which was p.cool and all. In Scorched Earth, blitz means enemies will surrender instead of retreating. Makes mopping up so much faster.

(o)Artillery gets Expert Support which allows for an extra defensive fire. Normally it only fires once in enemy turn, twice is you save an additional action a eot. Not groundbreaking, but useful.

(o)Anti Tanks get Expert entrenchment, which means they dig in to maximum level immediately.

(o)Anti Air get an increased +1 range (usually this means an 33% - 25% range increase and it makes a difference), slap this on top of the "Careful Positioning" order, and our 88 now has effective range of 5 hexes.

(o) Recon and Fighters get essentially the same thing - increased spotting range.

(o) Bomber special allows them to bomb in bad weather. But the effects are still reduced significantly.

The second comendation is randomly pre-defined for each leader. Some are situational, some are game - breakingl as long as they happen to the right guy.

I haven't seen them all yet, but some of the effects I've seen are:

(o)Immune to AA when paradropping (obv wasted for anything other than infantry. Although I think there is one or two paradroppable light recon stuffies in vanilla game..
(o)Increased amo by +4 - awesome on bombers, good for everything else, useless on infantry.
(o) First move action is free - useful for just about everything.
(o) Increased resistance to attribute damage - very useful
(o)Convert suppression to kills - I've had wet dreams of having it on bombers. Or artillery.
(o)Unlimited refits (normally, only the first unit refit is to fullstrength - fairly useless.
etc.
Hopefully, we'll see some of this on our team.
