I figured out why I don't particularly care for the type of multiclassing allowed in PoE2:

* like how in Elminage the Fighter class is a basic class and in most ways becomes surpassed by Lords and Samurais and Ninjas and Hunters, but the Fighter basic class still remains the class with the highest physical damage output and the only class with access to the most damaging axes and swords; you trade brute force in favor of versatility basically. THIS is the kind of "balance" I like.

Like how you can technically make a Samurai-wannabe in Wizardry/Elminage by classing a mage into a fighter, but he still won't be a true Samurai although he would fulfill the same "role". Having to choose at the start two classes to mix together that will always produce the same results is boring, IMO. What would I do to change PoE2's multiclassing?
I would remove multi-classing and instead make the combo-classes (the class name that results from combining two other classes); I would take those, modify their trees and make them into Prestige/Advanced classes of some sort. This way it also works out better for newer players as they don't have to make front-loaded blind choices.
If it were possible I'd also implement my preferred type of multiclassing, i.e. changing from one class to another and retaining specific functions of the previous one that depend on the class you're changing from and changing into, but I don't think this is currently possible without a true modding tool kit.

anything with rogue, anything melee with monk /w lightning strikes, paladin/chanter, cipher/any martial class or ranger, paladin/warrior for invulnerability mode, fighter/enchanter
As for multi-classing, imo the more you allow mixing classes, the more you go away from actual advantages class based systems have. You mix fighter with cleric to get paladin, then you allow fighter dual into cleric which is, uh, kinda paladin, then you add prestiges for cleric to make them better fighters, and prestiges to paladins to make them better healers, and in the end that all would probably just look better as a skill system already eh? Classes are great in settings (and systems) with strict roles, where everyone is expected to behave in a particular way, but using them to just mix bunch of abilities seems like missing the point of what they are supposed to do.

Well, okay, I can understand your position. Personally I'm not a fan of Elminage-style multiclassing, where (mostly) only spells are inherited (in limited numbers).
An alternative to "advanced" classes are subclass kits, which are present in PoE2 and some of them are quite the game changers.
I agree that the system is not perfect. And it does dilute class identity. But I think most multiclass systems tend to do this, to a greater or lesser degree. Personally I was a great fan of DnD 3rd / 3.5 ed. style multiclassing and Prestige classes (like in NWN & NWN2). Loved the depths, complexity and endless possibilities there. But I will admit those were even more meta-gamey.
Santino's voice that the classes don't work together well and end up competing for action time is only justified in case of caster multiclasses IMO. Sure, in that case you can unload one or the other spellbook (but spells from those spellbooks can still complement each other/the party). Martial classes tend to have lots of great passives, which will be useful regardless (also in caster-martial multiclasses). Plus the martial class resource pools are limited and they can easily burn trough all of their resources.
Note that multiclassing isn't necessarily always the optimal choice. Some classes get powerful skills when left pure and even end game abilities to recover class resources and keep on rocking. Plus they get access to each power level much sooner then a multiclass.

Well, I don't really agree with that. You could say that if the game mostly consisted of active abilities. But as there are lots of passives, which can complement many builds, many multiclasses work together very well. Yes, you play 2 classes at once. But actually noone is forcing you to do that. Pure classes are fine as well (less so in case of Paladin and Rogue, but still).

It's the same with the IE games multiclasses, except there you use both class abilities simultaneously, e.g. fighter/mage you can cast and still attack with 10 APR, fighter/thief you can attack with 10 APR and backstab once instantly etc.
I played Ascendant/Assassin and was pretty happy, you fill max focus on opening strike(s) and can spam away afterwards, with Shadowing Beyond for invincibility when targeted.

I was really against multiclasses at the start, because it just seems like a tacked on feature. The classes are as is very non-restrictive about how you play them. You can use any kind of gear, you have some damage, tanking, cc, support, abilites... Plus the subclasses are usually pretty cool. However during gameplay I've noticed that I enjoy playing multiclass characters more. They just seem handier and more fun to build. You find some interesting synergy and you stick with that. For single clases I often end up feelin like I'm wasting half the skill points for stuff I'm never gonna use... It's funny cause you'd think sinle classes would be very specialised and muticlassing would mitigate that, but it's kinda the other way around.
