No way the backers and some other people are still riled up about that...or can they?

Not exactly. Fucking in a brothel, becoming a porn star in Fallout 2, fucking a sheep in Arcanum etc. are small touches that many people like (including people that hate romance). But no one played the games only for that, so it's not a deal breaker if a game ships without the option to become a fluffer in it. I don't have something against someone who likes romances (even the bioware ones, god help his soul). But the whole drama

Didn't the ME2 suicide mission had essentially the same concept, based on your relationship level with each companion?

Actually, it sounds like Mask of the Betrayer. It is the only RPG that comes to my mind that gives you super bonuses in combat for an accomplished romance (or camaraderie).

Hm now when I think about it, whole premise there was about two lovers going against laws of Multiverse. So, it was Obsi who created most true love driven rpg ever.

If they made a big deal about how they wouldn't allow the player character to buy the services of prostitutes because it's a dumb feature, then yes, a lot of people would write a lot of angry words about "censorship" and women invading the boys' club/mancave. Some have already done that in regards to female armor.

Anyway, as far as I remember, Torment (and one bizarre case in Heart of Winter) was the only IE game that allowed it. BG2 (and also BG I guess) had prostitutes, but you could only talk to them.
