Does the above mean we'd need a ride check to get down the switchback?

If so, we may want to lead the horses down and worry about getting to the hill in the morning.
If you want to ride down the hill you will need to pass a ride check. This is more like a goat track than a road.

Cormac throws caution to the wind and spurs his highland pony into a trot down the hard-scrabble granite switchbacks. The horse is sure-footed and Cormac's nerves are steel-like and in a matter of 15 minutes he reaches the bottom of the hill.

Grinning in self-satisfaction and heart pumping from adrenaline, Cormac brings his horse to heel and turns back to look up the hill at his friends and waves enthusiastically. Some are about half-way down the escarpment and above them high overhead you notice a "blot" in the sky . . . in the lengthening shadows ofthe setting sun it's difficult to make out details, except that it looks like a very large raptor perhaps (roll a search check if you wish, notifying your companions will require some other means in the harsh, blowing wind.)

Cormac squints and notices that the "raptor" is something "more."

It circles, exposing its tail and instead of the customary fan, you see something that shocks you. It has a torso, rear legs and a lashing tail. From this distance the details are indistinct, but if you didn't know better you'd say it's a beast of legendry, a gryphon!

Cormac's eyes widen and his mouth drops open. "Thhh, that's a gryphon? That's a gryphon!"

Cormac casts moonrise. He then grabs the orb of light in his hand and waves it back and forth in the direction of the group, while glancing back at the flying beast.

Everybody laughs as Cormac rides pellmell down the hill and eventually pulls up where the plain starts to flatten out. For some reason he produces a globe of light in his hand and starts waving it back and forth frantically. Everyone roll an Idea roll (INTx5%)

Marán and Urash assay that Cormac is trying to signal to them in some way, that he's warning them. (Everyone roll a sense check, Marcán and Urash get +20% to their skill).

Mab and Ker both look up as each feels a heavy buffet of wind like a downdraft (You are not surprised and are able to dodge or parry if you are targeted). To their great surprise an extremely large "raptor" (larger than a horse) is plummeting in a dive at all of you. It appears to be headed straight for ... (Everyone but Cormac needs a Luck Roll (POW x 5). Those who fail are potential targets, which I will select randomly).

Urash drops to the ground, barely avoiding a jagged rock that would have no doubt disfigured him had he landed a few inches to the right.

"what the...!!"
