That picture doesn't show how thick that manual is either. Fucking awesome game.

AC4 was nice for the combat pace portion, with PA bringing back the same sort of effect heat had before, where someone could blast the fuck out of you and you'd try to evade until you can recover. And laserblades were actually deadly again, albeit for a different reason. Unfortunately, the vs arenas are still shit, as they have been since AC3. Etal Base was by far the coolest stage to fight a mech battle in. Wish I could find a video of someone fighting there. Huge area, tons of cover, huge ceiling, skyscrapers high enough to burn out your opponent's energy trying to get even altitude with you (Allowing for awesome skydive attacks by recovering on top of the building then jumping down.) I seriously hope the stage design for the next AC doesn't suck like it has for so many years.
There is hope, since AC4A was considerably better in vs stage selection, even though it didn't have proper cityscape. They were much larger and more detailed than what had been on the table in AC for a while. And of course, all the destructible stuff added to the fun when either playing as or against giant missile gunboats.

The Regulations also added to it, though the unlimited energy Regulation was pretty prone to derp. They also did pretty well with the unlimited ammo option, by making it more like a huge ass reload time. Very nice for iron man matches.

Such a great duelling game AC4, had awesome fun chasing people down with laser blades while trying not to get hit, or stun locking people with the twin bazooka arms

You ever built a fast-as-hell mech with additional boosters that could perpetually OB while slashing with its two energy blades? (only possible in AC4A)

Nothing like fighting in the huge ruined city map, where your standard attack plan is going to the edge of the map, pointing yourself at the general direction of the enemy, and then moving at him so fast he need luck to lock-on before you've already sped past him. 3000 mph is the lowest fight speed for that thing bro (no OB).

I haven't played 4 Answer much. It's also really annoying to grind out the singleplayer to unlock all the parts, some of those missions are bloody hard.

There's only few missions where I haven't gotten the gold rating either on Normal or Hard. It's just a matter of finding the correct trick for the most part.

BUT MOTHERFUCKER I AM NEVER PLAYING THE FINAL DESTRUCTION PATH MISSION AGAIN. EVER.

The moral of this thread: don't challenge Vaarna to a mech video game debate.

Looks promising. Visually.
The movement feels heavy, but the weapon doesn't pack a punch.

Hm. I got the impression that the mech were actually zipping around way, way to easily, given their apparent mass. Made the whole thing near-indistinguishable from the many other generic futuristic MP shootans with people (or what goes for people in them). Mechs sniper-perching didn't help, either. And the miniscule scale of the map (but I'm hoping that's just because it's an alpha or something). And the mechs having total HP, instead of damage to individual components (or did I miss something there?). And...
Eh, overall, p. underwhelming, so far.

It doesn't look big enough. It's like someone put a cockpit on a FPS game. The Mechwarrior trailer gave much better sense of scale.

Which is pretty pointless if they don't make it feel like a mech themed FPS, not like a normal FPS with a mech cockpit slapped on.

Well it did seem like you could turn off your mech to fool the enemy's radar which is always cool. It really needs locational damage, though.

The use of total damage and locational damage in a mecha game is actually a very interesting topic. MechWarrior doesn't have much to say here either, because it uses the worst locational damage mechanic: Locational HP. Heavy Gear 2 made excellent use of locational damage, as it used penetration mechanics instead of "shoot for x amount" and you could aim at weapons systems as well, not to mention that certain weapons could damage electronics of a Gear. On the other hand, Armored Core is perfectly fine with just total HP, and locational damage really wouldn't improve the game because of the speed and mobility at which it takes place would make accurate manual aiming next to impossible.

Though I will say that Hawken looks depressingly like a usual FPS except with mechs. You've got your usual limited weapon loadout of CoD school, turrets and a fucking sprint button. I also don't notice any automatic weaponry, which is a damn shame considering how awesome the bulletstorms in AC4 series can be. However, I don't mind there being sniper mechs, because thus far NO mech game I've played has done the sniper aspect exceptionally well (that is, the kind of sniping where you lie in wait, silent and hidden). Theoretically HG2 had all the right tools, but the graphics just couldn't accomondate hiding in the terrain. As usual, it was just a matter of being able to fire at particularly long ranges.

The sounds are just fine though. At least the ballistic weapons don't sound like the pussified crap from vanilla MW3 or MW4 (in fact, the ACs in MW4 didn't even sound like automatic cannons at all until somewhat improved new sounds in Mercs).

I don't think any game has done sniping exceptionally well aside from a few very scripted moments in recent war porn FPS games. In my opinion the best mech sniping was in Chromehounds where the ranges were usually ridiculously long, but then again the snipers were more like mobile guns than mechs. That game also did artillery pretty well.

Also there was a missile barrage and an automatic weapon in that trailer.

Flashpoint did pretty good job at snipers if you ask me. It did quite a lot considering the lack of graphics power necessary for truly obscuring foliage (and magical AI eagle eyes).
