Is he really that much of a name outside of dedicated western RPG communities like this one though? So much that they would connect his name to a AAA game purely for marketing purposes?
He is quite known. Of course he is not a super star like in RPG communities, but he isn't a complete unknown, such as, for example, people like Fargo or Sawyer. There are more people than you would expect who played Torment and liked it.
I'm not so convinced about that.

Torment is one of those games where existing fans are p vocal so that people hanging in certain communities might think how it and Avellone are far bigger than they are, and where it is fashionable for everyone else to put into Best Ever lists regardless of whether or not they have played it.

Codex Year of the Donut Serpent in the Staglands Dead State Divinity: Original Sin Project: Eternity Torment: Tides of Numenera Wasteland 2 Shadorwun: Hong Kong Divinity: Original Sin 2 A Beautifully Desolate Campaign Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire Pathfinder: Kingmaker Pathfinder: Wrath I'm very into cock and ball torture I helped put crap in Monomyth
Do you see them using him as marketing? The only reason people know he's involved is because he tweeted about it.

But it won't hurt them, obviously.

I don't. It was more in answer to people commenting that will do little if anything of game's writing, which implies that he is there as a "guest star" (and IMO he really isn't that much of a brand to be used for something like that in a AAA game of this caliber).

Sawyer I get, but Fargo? Fargo is a complete unknown?

Yeah, pretty sure that nobody knows him outside of RPG communities :)
In these hours I'm posting on a lot of forums, and in Prey topics there are many people who knows this "Avellone" guy, though.
Then again, his presence isn't for big marketing purposes. Just look at the most important videogame sites, almost everyone reported this information, but you won't find it in the home page, as if he was Kojima or Miyamoto.

More like he will "work" on Fallout 5 for 40 hours or so. What was the last time he was lead on anything instead of just minor contribution to generate hype by mere association?

Heh, i like how everybody wants Avellone to have some minor involvement in their game in order to generate hype by association, as you say, but nobody wants to have him as their lead writing man.

BTW, better Prey than any Fallout. Having Avellone work on any in-house Bethesda game would be like having Shakespeare write for a Michael Bay film. There's nothing to be gained in sticking a couple of precious pebbles in a giant turd. Also, this game is going to use id Tech 6, right? No Gamebryo shit i hope.

^Probably that Void engine (just like Dishonored 2) which is apparently based on id Tech 6.

And yeah, better Arkane that one of Bethesda Fallout/TES teams. At least this way there is a chance that his writing will be attached to actually good game.

Heh. (note the shirt)

Eh, I'm really not getting that reference and the comments aren't at all helping. What's it about? Something related to ye olde "press X for awesome", or something that requires lotsa points dumped into GAF Lore stat in order to be funny?

Well, the best we can hope for is a version of Bioshock Infinite.
Nope, the space ship is open and they allow you to backtrack from new areas to old ones so for this alone it will better than Infinite Shit.

Why are they using the Prey title for their shameless System Shock 2 ripoff? Give me Prey 2 you chucklefucks. The cliffhanger ending has been bothering me since 2006, I want my native american in space back. It was the last good shooter I played before the decline killed the genre.

MCA brought me here.

I've only seen the trailer and it looked like a shitty space jump scare shooter.

tl;dr Is this anything more than Dead Space Infinite?

Except Void Egine is based on idTech 5.

According to this, Arkane Austin has licensed the CryEngine in 2013:

Not sure whether that still holds true or whether they made a switch.
