There are circumstances where QTEs are perfectly fine in a game, but like every other part of a game they need to be used well and properly.

QTEs are almost always used as placeholders in lieu of better gameplay mechanics by lazy people lacking the know-how to make better gameplay mechanics.

The one commandment regarding QTEs is that they should not be used as a primary gameplay mechanic. Break that rule and you end up with people hating them.

And they've been around longer than you think. People didn't complain that much about them back then because they were used sparingly. Wiggle the joystick (or tap A and B) to get out of a hold or balance yourself at the edge of a pit, does that sound familiar? In most cases it wasn't Game Over if you failed it, but it would be a detriment and could lead to Game Over.

QTEs as we see them today are primarily a symptom of poor gameplay design. People can do better than this, but they don't wanna.

I won't play a game unless it has at least 2 QTEs per minute.
