This is my first time playing KR and I'm not using any external help form my maiden-run, so bare with me as I miss some obvious exploits.

IMHO you won't need any exploits for the normal end route.

Well, I'm not totally sure of the exact mechanics, but I think the experience is tied to amount of enemy troops you kill in the fight. Maybe, can't remember.

Buy the Popularity Staff/Staff of Charisma from the Merchant ASAP, use it on every general who is going to level up in next fight. Transfer from attacking general to defending general so you can get multiple uses on single week.

You will want to explore dungeons as much as you can. Get safety plant from Leazas Castle and then using that on appropriate general, Ring of Happiness from... uh, dangerous hole?

EXP mechanics is
Always 1 XP per fight in Dungeon.
Random 6-20 XP for any fight you win, and this is the part where I'm not sure, but I believe it's halved with you lose. Doesn't matter how many enemies you kill or if the enemies run off after a single hit
If Rance had sex with Rebecca before the battle, this changes to Random 1-50 instead, which is a lot more XP on average.

And Ring of Happiness has a description that's self-explanatory.

Maybe because this is like my 3rd playthrough of KR already but you actually don't really have to bother with micro-ing characters and it really barely matters whether they level up or not. The most likely result of leveling seems to be "Commander Attack +1" which will only matter for certain characters (mostly the characters who can hurt Demons) and your chances of getting an appropriate troop boost in areas where you actually use them is really low. For better or for worse if a character's usefulness is basically decided at base.

Incidentally there isn't really any New Game + bonuses for KR outside of 1 additional spy, so the only thing you "carry over" between playthroughs per say is how to handle events better.

You should delay capturing the prison for special scenes and only after those capture that prologue female general.

Fun and happy times!

I wonder should I play Sengoku Rance first or this one?

Also should I try to find HD with Rance installation, or should I get iso yet again?

edit: I meant Sengoku.

Insert clever insult here
KR is freeware or public domain or something like that. Alicesoft is distributing it freely now, which is why the translation patch isn't a patch but actually the full game.

If you literally have no idea on who any of the Rance characters are and etc, play Sengoku first, it's better standalone. Kichikuou was originally intended to be the original finale of a series because the company was near bankrupt and absolutely requires that you know who the characters are and their motivations and relationships etc.

Also get ISO.

A question about the end "bosses"

When dealing with the Kaijuus who are the recomendeed units?

Miki and who else? I think you can get Mercs with huge troops numbers. And I dont have the special characters (King Hanny and Kaijuu prince).
Right now I'm boosting Cordova's troops, he seems to be durable. Maybee I will do the same with Rick. Any tips?

Don't Cordoba and Rick both have a penalty to dungeon battles?

Actually there's a surprising amount of people with that, it's kind of annoying.

I think Patton's one of the best Dungeon fighters if you recruited him.

edit: Leila's probably another good candidate, unless you Bad Ended her.

The wiki sez...
"At the end of year 3 August 3rd week, Soul will be taken away. At the end of year 4 January 3rd week, Shiiru (sic lol) will also be taken away."
So that's your first time limit. Which is actually pretty tight unless you don't care about them.

The 2nd time limit is another soft one, which is the Demon Realm attacking. I don't recall the exact date for that though.

IIRC the demon realm starts attacking around... end of year 4.

Pretty generous time limit considering that you could probably have taken them out by mid year 4 if you know what you're doing.

FWIW, the fight mechanics are something like ATK - DEF * 10% = % chance of dealing 1 damage. Troops use their base attack/defense + their commander's bonuses (so for Rance in a dungeon it's 10/6 + 1/0) with the number of attacks = the number of troops (or the field size, whichever is smaller) and each troop having 1 HP. Commander of course uses their own attack/defense/HP and they are always the last to be attacked and to attack. Obviously there is some kind of floor so that commanders with high DEF aren't completely unhittable by troops, but you get the point. Generally +Defense is far more powerful of a stat on your main units since taking someone from a 30%->10% chance to take hits is far stronger than taking their damage 50%->70%. For Magic attacks Magic is both the attack and defensive sides of the equation.

So in dungeons Leila's +1/+1 is counteracted by her base troop stats being -1/-1 compared to Rance's troops and Rance gets a +1/0 of his own to help him. Patton is a great dungeon commander but his low troop limit sees him go down to attrition eventually.

One question, the levelling seems awfully slow, it's like I'm getting constantly 1 exp for battles when there is like 220 exp to the next level. Really?

Leveling is mostly irrelevant. Very rarely you get +1 to a commander troop-leadership stat, but unless you save scum it will almost never be in the right spot. You can boost troop numbers through the one item but the end game will almost entirely be based around defending in cities where troop size is limited, otherwise good fucking luck beating armies of 5000 troops each. The +attacks on commander is only really relevant for commanders using the commander-targetting attacks.

What's the max number of turns you can 'waste' leveling in the beginning and not get fucked later on?
Don't worry too much, but at the same time there's not a ton you can really do to "level" your characters. Character leveling gives low returns and troop leveling (other than by character leveling with the ring on) is exorbitantly expensive for low gain. And things like building stuff are mostly time-limited.

IIRC the Demon Realm attacking happens around the end of the 4th year. It wasn't a problem in my first game and at the time I was hardly able to decipher the moonrunes and figure out the story roadblocks that were stopping progress.

I'm considering doing a review of Sengoku Rance for RPG Codex or Tacticular Cancer. However, if I am going to do another playthrough I'd like to accomplish something different to make it interesting. The only thing I am missing from previous playthroughs is gaining the Takeda House. I never seemed to be able to collect those guys into my army. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can pull this difficult maneuver off?

You need to attack and take out Takeda ASAP and then watch the end-of-turn scroll at the bottom to see which houses they end up being recruited by. Try assassinating/capturing a lot of generics from houses you are in war with to encourage them to hire more, but otherwise a lot of it is up to dice. Then you have to hope whoever recruited them deploys them but usually they get used fairly often.

Enter one of the routes without demon army, deal with them in the process of conquering all others houses, leave one province of the last house and wait until they get hired. Capture them while defending. In my case the last house was the one with faggot brothers. There is skill that would help to capture generals, so it good to have a character with it in the battle. And picking maids and monster houses as starting bonuses should help to deal with blitz.

But I wouldn't call this game a proper playthrough, since it should be built around acquiring just one game bonus from the beginning to the end, and not around maximising your score, getting optimal resolution to various plot lines or even completing the main story. But from the other hand beating their blitz on the hardest difficulty should provide a good challenge. And I still didn't beat it, since I did their bonus in the second hardest one and played all my games on the hardest difficulty picking it. And not only because they are amazing units, but because the perspective tp face their blirz there wasn't all that tempting. The same reason why I always pick monster house, so I wouldn't fight their broken diviner. Maybe ut woryh a try to beat the hardest one without picking any of the top 3 houses at the start, but after thinking about it this idea looks masochistic and would probably require an annoying amount of savescumming.

Nah, you don't want to take out too many other houses. Every time you kill a house their left over units go into a global pool for other houses to hire. If you only take Takeda out first, you'll have a much smaller house for the rest to hire from, leading to the Takeda's getting selected sooner. If you defeat all but one you can go hundreds of turns before they get hired.

the end game will almost entirely be based around defending in cities where troop size is limited.

Troop size is relevant early on when you're constantly conquering new provinces.
I was fighting Helman and JAPAN and had to trigger Zeth war early as well to cure Milli. Six defensive fights in a turn is !FUN!

Also, defending in cities will increase the battle area. Which in turn will mean that you'll want to have your armies have at least more troops than the increased battle area.

IIRC the Demon Realm attacking happens around the end of the 4th year. It wasn't a problem in my first game and at the time I was hardly able to decipher the moonrunes and figure out the story roadblocks that were stopping progress.

Besides the demon attack, the limit is soft yes. You'll mainly be wanting to not waste time leveling up because certain characters will end up raped and killed (or both) if you dilly-dally for too long. But then again, if you blitz too fast you'll also miss events and opportunities to recruit certain characters.

BTW, the game is quite awesome with triggers. Rick dying, for example, can have several consequences. Depending on which stage other triggers are.

Hundreds is a way too big overstatement. Getting them all around turn 150 is a realistic expectation as long as one manages to kill enemy generals properly. And one still need troops and collection of a good generals to defeat blitz in the first place. Not to mention that avoiding wars isn't realistic in this game and war on several fronts could quickly became quite annoying. But yes, a few small non-aggressive houses, that never gets annexed or attacks you, could be better left alone until all Takeda generals are hired.

I'm in tears after dealing with Pi-R (Piar).

Genious kid that turned into a demon and frooze her sister 200 year ago to save her from some disease, start turning random cute virgins into cyborgs or something.
Eventually Rance finds where the girl is, fucks her and when Pi-R sees them collapses.
