It's a gambling game, more or less. The story is centered around the wizard Rizna (blonde from Sengoku).
Crappy gameplay, short fun story.

TADA also said he wanted to reremake Rance 02 +M

Why? New Rance 2 have several problems, like some events, that was pain in ass to trigger. But it is pretty fun game. And I don't see any room for significant improvements and transformation it in gameplay and storytelling masterpiece.
If he wants remake something recent that badly, then it better be that indistinct thing called Rance Quest. Or make proper remake of rance 3, but that game, frankly, aged very well and don't really need it.

5D has crap gameplay but it's the "WTF" sort of innovative crap gameplay.

Story in 5D is mostly just an introduction to Rizna. You saw her as one of the Zeth reinforcements in Sengoku, but 5D is where she originated from. She'll get more development in Rance 6 though.

Rance 02 is basically a carbon-copy of Rance 2 with better graphics. I don't think a single thing is otherwise changed between them. So it's not really a remake in the same vein that this looks to be and that a re-remake of Rance 2 would be.

I agree that Rance Quest is the most disappointing of the "real" Rance games at the moment though. Maybe the japs like their grindan simulators though.

Well, Rance Quest Magnum is much better, far less grind that in the vanilla unpatched game, and a proper story. But I haven't played it much.

But I still don't see any need of "proper" remake. Old games with such simple design have their own charm and it will be much better to concentrate effort on new games and leave previous as they is now. But I would not object remake Rance 3 with new graphic and interface.

I play only several missions and don't reach the stage, where you need to relevel your character in order to keep them useful. But it is not something I am looking forward to. Mostly I didn't like limit on how much your character can use various actions. As idea it looked interesting, but in practice it wasn't about planning ahead, but mostly about replaying same mission multiple times trying to find a right path. Maybe it would be better on high levels, but on low levels it mostly frustrating and boring.
And there is lack of proper map also. That scheme with squares can't be called a map, it would be a blasphemy. And there is very ugly 3D graphic. Why everyone trying to do games in 3D now even if they don't have enough money to do it right?

If you haven't gotten to the Magnum part then you've not witnessed the grind yet. Out of nowhere you'll need to gain another 10 levels to pass a Magnum quest. This will probably happen at least twice. Some of the mororun bullshit was reduced but the amount of grind you need to do is overall pretty similar if not more. You technically didn't NEED to mororun in RQ (though you missed out on almost all CGs of course...). XP requirements for levels naturally goes up exponentially and the good leveling characters (Katsuko and Torako especially) get hosed because their XP-boosting abilities don't work past level 50.

Plus it annoys me that there is no effective XP sharing, so you'll always end up with only 5-7 characters that are usable out of like 60. Shit sux man. So many characters and I'm pigeonholed into using so few of them. And unless you want to make it harder on yourself you won't even think about choosing from the 80% or so of weaker characters who either require much more levels or simply don't work at all at higher levels.

Money-wise releasing a 2-3 hour long game that you already have 90% of content other than updated graphics for is pretty cheap compared to a full modern game. Obviously R3 has a lot more content then R2 or R1 though.

Get the ninja skill that improves your chance of escape from battles and start spamming escapes on all of them. It's the only way to avoid being required to basically level a whole second squad just to get to bosses. And certain end-game quests end up being literal endurance matches that are impossible without a 3rd or even 4th group otherwise.

I tried to play this game when patch with some minor translation was released. And I have nor motivation, nor language knowledge tio continue untill there will be a full translation. It is not Rance 6 after all, when you start the game only to look at it with just one eye and end it after killing the final boss, without any knowledge about what going on in that game storywise.
But thanks for the tip. It makes gameplay look atleast bearable. But wouldn't your character be underleveled for bosses in that case?

If you're trying to win quests (especially for the first time to get access to bigger view point), do the running trick.

If you're trying to grind for exp or items, fight those spikey red balls. The EXP multiplier for winning those is ridiculous, like 5-10x what a random battle would give you.

Much better than trying to half-heartedly do quests while also "leveling up" through random encounters.

The quests in the multileveled dungeon tend to be the best for XP btw. You can load up a group with tons of AoE (Rance/Shizuka/Ria/Torako) and kill enemy groups that would be much harder than what you could manage while questing normally. You'll run out of actions in just a few fights but get tons of XP for those fights. 5-10x is an underestimate IMO.

Rance 4 is 74% translated, so except for tech problems it could be out by early september or sooner.

Rance 01 trial next week.

Reading up on people playing the demo, it looks like they've added enough to the original game that we probably shouldn't expect THAT quick of a translation. I'll give it 2 months.

Leaving tech problems aside R4 should be out in a month or so. R01 shouldn't take much longer.

I wasn't really talking about tech. I'm saying the R01 DEMO has more lines of text than the ENTIRE original game, so it's probably going to take a bit longer to translate it.

Other than STB, they released a translation of the "digest" version of Rance 1 and 2, which is basically the games turned into compressed VNs which was included with R6 in order to catch people up to the events.

The translations are better than the original, but I suspect with the upcoming R01 remake, the digest won't be seeing much use.

For some reason I'm getting an urge to replay either Sengoku or Kichikuou now. Too bad the latter supposedly won't be translated until after R6.

edit: RIV is 100% playtesting but you shouldn't expect it until Sep 3rd minimum, or so they say.
