Hi. I generally prefere western RPGs and Strategies, but had played some japanese titles in the past. Can You recomend me any good games based on my past experiences?

What i played so far:

1. The Bad: FF7, FF9 and Chrono Cross

Bad combat systems in which only Boss fights are engaging and all other fights are a boring slog against enemies that can't hurt You.

Bad writting, lots of convoluted, supernatural nonsense. As a kid i did not understood FF7 story, later i had read some explaination on the internet, id made me understand even less...

2. The OK: Suikoden 2, Chrono Trigger, FF Tactics (psx)

Both S2 and CT had typical jRPG combat but they made it harder than usual so it was more engaging. Also Suikoden 2 had tactical battles added (like in FE series) and i liked it.
Both games have good stories that are not too veird or complicated. I liked Suikoden more because it was more about politics and less about supernatural crapp.

FFT had good story but any fun from combat was diminished by its character development system. There were easy ways to break the game. Like geting low Faith stat (resistance to magic), Or training monks on high levels (past level 30 monk deals more damage using fists than the best sword). Only way for me to enjoy FFT is to make a long list of builds that i cannot use... Bad design.

3. The Good: Tactics Ogre (on GBA and on PSP) and Fire Emblems (from 7 to avakening on emulators)

All have good stories about war and politics. TO on PSP has some forced supernatural stuff in the end (stuff that was not mentioned for most of the story) and writting in FE sometimes gets naive. But its way better than typical FF crap.

Good tactical combat on a grid! Yes there are some problems, like unbalanced classes in TO (archers are op) or random stat growths in FE (but that can be ignored in newer entries) but it is way better than killing underpowered mooks in FF.

How about Persona 4 or 5? They’re super weeby and the combat system is different enough from the other jrpgs you’ve listed so when you play ‘em you’ll be like, “whoa, this is like, totally fresh and challenging! Maybe I’ll check out the Shin Megami Tensei games next!”.

You seem to care most about story, followed by combat, so:

Vagrant Story

Nice story, EXCELLENT translation into English, very interesting combat system. It's an excellent game, but it's also a love-it-or-hate it experience because it's so different from your typical JRPG. Very hard until you learn how to play the game.

No story (but also no BAD story):

Final Fantasy 1
(NES/FC or PSX version only)
Party customization, Vancian spellcasting, worthwhile loot in dungeons that is worth seeking out, random encounters that are meant to whittle down your limited resources (just as D&D intended), mechanics designed and programmed by Apple II hero and mega-genius Nasir Gebelli. This game is awesome and replayable.

With such simplistic tastes that more or less go along the genre lines, why don't you simply go and google search SRPG?
All of them have some kind of a grid (which seems to be your main concern) so you can just sort the rest by the looks and plot summery.

Final Fantasy 7 suffers from a very rushed translation that hurts the narrative. You could always try replaying it with a fan translation and some balancing/difficulty patches to improve the experience.

Same goes for Final Fantasy Tactics when it comes to difficulty. There's a few different patches (both for the PS1 and PSP version) that attempt to put a stop to obvious exploits and make the game challenging. Word of advice, if you do try to use 1.3 look for the Easy Type version since it's more about balancing the game out instead of challenging the turbo autists that know the game inside out.

Front Mission 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 (but only after finishing all previous games) are worth a playthrough. 3 has a somewhat irritating protagonist with daddy issues, but you're going to be too busy blowing shit up to care much - and the nature of the games pretty much guarantees they'll be dealing with war and politics.

For me gameplay is always more important than a story. But i hate when story is dumb or nedlesly convoluted. So Battle Brothers > Witcher 3. d
Despite the fact that i love this World (fan of the book series)

Vagrant Story's a solid choice. Game is well-known yet somehow still manages to be both overlooked and underrated. Also, I dunno play Xenogears or something? I know you're just going to say it has bad writing, characters, etc, because you're just an edgy wannabe, but still we have to pretend like the OP made this post in earnest and actually wants us to recommend him good JRPGs.

A general list of JRPGs I liked and that stuck with me as good experiences:

- Wizardry 1-6 remakes (6 is only on SNES, 1-3 and 5 are on both SNES and PS1 with differing graphics, and 4 is only on PS1. Generally speaking I recommend the PS1 versions over the SNES versions because the PS1 versions are more faithful, but the SNES versions have great 2d art which is a joy to look at and arguably better soundtracks.)
- Wizardry Empire 2
- Wizardry Gaiden 4
- Elminage: Original and Gothic
- Stranger Of Sword City
- The Dark Spire
- Earthbound
- Mother 3
- Vagrant Story
- Xenogears
- Final Fantasy 4, 6 and 12 (if only going to play one then play FF6)
- Dragon Quest 3, 4, 5 and 7 (if only going to play one then play DQ7)
- Persona 1 and 2 (Persona 2 is broken up into 2 seperate games)
- SMT Nocturne
- SMT Deep Strange Journey
- Breath Of Fire 3 and 5
- Lunar 1
- Ogre Battle 1 and 2 (the 2nd game is called Ogre Battle 64)
- Kartia
- Vandal Hearts
- Front Mission 4
- Phantasy Star 4
- Shining Force 2
- Secret Of Mana
- Terranigma

Got tired of typing. You'll probably never play any of these and just google footage on YouTube and say 90% of these are all trash anyways.

I'm more a Western guy myself, but I did love Secret of Mana and Final Fantasy VI back in the day. If you're into the general SNES vibe I'd check those out. You have Chrono Trigger in the "okay" section and I'd put those in the same league, only Mana is more action focused and less story obsessed, which IMO is a good thing. I still liked Mana a lot somewhat recently, though FF6 was a little too weeabo story heavy last time I tried it.

I hear the Xenoblade games for Wii and Switch are quite good action JPRGs in a similar vein to Mana and want to try them eventually.

I don't know if I'd classify the Xenoblade games as action RPGs. They're much closer to RTwP.

2. The OK: Suikoden 2
Try Suikoden 3 instead of 2. Story-wise it's split between 3 characters. Only Hugo is similar to the main character of 2 in that he's your typical teenage hero. Chris is an established War Hero of a medieval society. Geddoe is a very well-traveled Mercenary with a lot more knowledge then he should seem, and you get to see story events from all 3 of their eyes. After completing Chapters 1 - 3 for all 3 of the characters, you get to make a particular choice that will result in some slight changes for Chapters 4 and 5. The tactical battle system is, imo, the best the series ever had to offer. With the exception of missing Viktor and Flik from S1 and S2 I also think it had the best cast of characters the series had to offer, particularly Hugo's Sgt. Joe, Geddoe's band of idiots, as well as some older characters from the previous 2 games. There's also a theory that Viktor is Hugo's father, because Lucia from 2 is his mother, and she got pregnant during the war, but he's nowhere to be found.

Tactics Ogre
Storywise, PSP wins out. Gameplaywise the SNES / PS1 version can't be beat. The lack of grindy bullshit puts it way over the top and just makes it a more enjoyable experience. Also, Archers and Ninjas aren't walking Gods of Death. You can't go wrong with any Ogre game, though, gameplay-wise Ogre Battle 64 is a bit of a slog compared to the rest of the series. Strategy is mostly non-existent, since you can just kill leaders of groups, and then complete the level at your leisure while they aimlessly wander.

FF12 The Zodiac Age. Made by the Ogre Battle guy, with a similar type of story but with a touch more magic interspersed before the finale. Wonderfully crafted world, top notch soundtrack, and the single best iteration of RTwP combat ever made. Also has oodles of side content that will keep difficulty fresh for the entirety of the game. Can and will make the main quest an absolute snore if you do it too quickly though. Zodiac Age's double license board system makes character and party building so much fun, doubly so if you make sure to use 1 of each class (12 classes, 6 characters).

Pure Combatfaggotry: Etrian Odyssey. They're all good, but I've seen some say EO Nexus is a little bit meh compared to the rest since it's bloated with too many of the series' old dungeons.

Wild Card: Shining the Holy Ark. FF7's lesser known, classier and more attractive sister who has aged like fine wine. Combination of storyfag JRPG from the mid-90's with blobber goodness. Dungeon design is wonderfully done, soundtrack is nice (long before Motoi Sakuraba decided to phone it in with Tales of spam). Fun Pixie system that kept you on your toes and rewarded you for being quick, and attentive by giving you extra XP / Gold, and some free damage on enemies at the start of a fight if you chose the right ones to send out at the start of battle. Made by the Golden Sun guys (1st 2 of which are also worth playing, but a bit too easy overall compared to StHA).

Thanks for all the answers. It's depressing that majority of recomendations are from old generations of hardware :( . It's almost like society gets dumber over ime so they make less/dumber RPG's .

Also. WTF they did witch the graphics in Suikoden 3? I remember part 2 had great 2d graphics. What is this 3d abomination?! Im not hating 3D, but this looks shit.

Yeah, I'm actually hard-pressed to think of a any JRPG past the PS2 era that I would truly consider "must play". Enjoyable or simply good, sure, but not "must play" or "classic".

If we're counting dungeon crawlers and Wiz-clones as "JRPGs" then the only classics released in recent years were japanese dungeon crawlers, which aren't really JRPGs at all.

Not saying there's a bunch of great modern JRPGs, as I wouldn't really know, but usually classics are mentioned first because of nostalgia bias and general "OMG YOU HAVE TO PLAY THE CLASSICS" attitude. There are definitely modern JRPGs that I hear people praise heavily, like the new Dragon Quest, the Vesperia series, Ni No Kuni 1 and 2 and the previously mentioned Xeno games on Nintendo's platforms. I'm sure there are others if you're into the genre more.

Atelier. But not Mysterious triliogy - it's not bad but apparent decline. My favorite is Dusk trilogy from newer ones and first Mana Khemia from older.

If you want a modern JRPG then Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel is a must (although arguably you need to play the earlier Trails in the Sky to be familiar with some of the characters). The game has a lot of politics (and manipulation), intrigue, terrorism, cults and generally people who aren't who you think they are. Combat is turn based with a spatial dimension with normally quick ways to finishing battles if you know how.

If you want to play a great SRPG then you are missing Fire Emblem 5 from your fire emblem list; the best one IMO and a lot darker than any of the others save 4.

For Pete's sake, how many legends of heroes have been made? Is it possible to play just one of them, like the best one, or one has to start from the beginning?

Have you heard of a little-known, obscure hardcore gem known as Dark Souls?
