Virgin bugmen shoving their sordid waifu fantasies over virgin bugmen players who lap that shit. In real life, someone Alyx would be fucking Tyrone and you know it. This waifu shit in games is cancer and just pathetic all around.

Pretty telling that it is all the no-taste hipsters here who think Half Life 2 was a great game.

She's Plain Jane, if not a little unattractive in my eyes. It's not necessarily a case of virgin bugmen developers pandering to virgin neckbeard gamer fantasies. If she is attractive in some people's eyes she is tastefully and unconventionally attractive: she never flirts, she's covered up, she's not wearing makeup etc. To add, she's half-black while the primary demographic of gamers are white males (which probably explains why I've no attraction. I've only found myself attracted to ~2 black women I've seen ever. Just not to my personal taste in the same way most middle eastern women are not either).

As for devs creating waifus to pander in general...it's fine in moderation and if handled with class. I'd say Alyx is almost one such example though it does feel a little bit cringey, since she and the overall story has no real depth and it's almost like she's there just to give the player some potential much-needed company. But still, there's no porn scenes with her or anything like that.

I can appreciate the tastefulness to a degree but it is still fucking pandering. There's nothing that can be added from our favored review:

This kid pretty much said everything there is to be said about why HL2 is such shit. HL2 is a soulless, made by committee non-game that exists only to capitalize on the success of the first game without any understanding of what made the original interesting in the first place. Art direction was interesting but maybe that's the issue. They just got a bunch of artists who had no idea how the fuck to make a real game.

Yup I've seen that vid and I agree with it all. Though I don't recall him going into much gameplay-wise. I hated how the ending was a stupid god mode power trip gimmick with the Gravity gun, for instance. Sure it was cool, until the novelty wore off in like 30 secs. Very anti-climatic. Where's the real gameplay finale at? Or was it meant to be the banal citadel shit that came before? Boo!

Codex 2016 - The Age of Grimoire
Doom 3 RoE manages to make the gravity gun less gimmicky without forcing you do use it for dumb physics puzzles. Also it shows how its used in a 5sec cutscene while every time you replay HL2 you have to go through a 20min tutorial halfway through the game every time. HL2 beta shows Valve had a more combat focused game in a much darker setting with way more enemy and weapon variety in mind yet they cut it all out for more seesaw puzzles. I think LS is exaggerating how bad it is since its moderately enjoyable in co-op but it's wasted potential: the game.

Half Life 1 is even worse than 2.

HL2 is a great game in my opinion. Not a perfect one, but "just" great. I like the more darker tone of the original plans, though. I understand that from a gameplay perspective some ideas simply didn't come out as right as planned and had to be scrapped, but, still, it's kind of sad to look at all the concepts in Raising The Bar that never came to be.

Anyway, I am planning to replay HL1 and HL2 with all the expansions/episodes and I know I am going to enjoy it a lot. I love the gameplay, the sounds and music so much, it's just beyond belief ;) I still think the voice acting in this game is one of the best I heard, too. I like the map design, even if it's very uneven in quality and very linear (but the linearity is constructed in such a way that it's not as noticeable like in a Call of Duty game). The graphics aged well, too, IMHO.

I still hope to see another Half-Life game in this lifetime.

I'm waiting for Black Mesa to finish Xen level to give a HL1 go on source engine.

Both HL games were the best shooters of their time

Best shooters of their time?

Half Life 1: Debatable. Combat could be challenging and enjoyable against human enemies thanks to the good AI, but otherwise meh. What saved it were the variety of interesting weapons and bestiary.

Half Life 2: No way, the whole thing reminds me of popamole before 'cover mechanics' were introduced. Enemies pop up and do heavily scripted things, and you pop em down with generic weapon type 2b.

Dunno about HL2, but I never actually liked shooting that much in HL. The gun-feel was just off.

The engine is nice.
Source Engine was a fucking disgrace at launch. The best part about HL1 was that it spawned Counter Strike which is one of the best multiplayer shooters of all time and the best part of HL2 is that there were a lot of great sourcemods like Insurgency.
