The wierd thing about Y0 though is that it was actually meant for existing fans, it plays on your existing expectations with the characters. Still, should be interesting to see the thoughts of a first time player.
Yes! I can't agree more.
The scene in Y0 when Majima, already lacking a fair share of marbles by that time, sees Kiryu in the crowd and goes his famous "Kiryu-chaaan!!!" for the first time in their relations, just won't hit the same chords if you have not played Y1 at least.

I shall be back with a report :salute:

So far, I find it hilarious that the writing and atmosphere in this goofy-ass Hard Boiled meets anime clown show is more skillful than 99% of the RPGs I've played. It feels like it was written by an actual writer, which is a novel concept for a video game. Which in turn means it's gotta be an excellent translation? Sidequests feel hit or miss though, I've begund text skipping on some of them.

I can also see why starting with 0 isn't optimal now, but the story works well anyway so far.
That's the best part about Yakuza. It's a hard boiled crime drama that in between the tales of loyalty, brotherhood, betrayal and grit it turns into an interactive shitpost.

It's like a Scorsese movie co-written by 4chan.
it does so in only a handful of entries, in others it's really relegated to the sidest of side content

Man, it's not just the writing. The "acting" work is sublime. The subtle facial expressions on the three Dojima lieutenants, for example. It's so well directed, well-"written" in the sense that for such a verbose game, it's got a lot of communication happening without text. This game should be taught in story direction class for video game devs instead of trash tier AAA-shit and GTA or whatever. Again, for something that has scenes as ridiculous as Majima's introduction the game shows a lot of cinematographic skill and subtlety.

I don't want to be negative because I like this series but the whole "take 5 steps and get ambushed by a bunch of bandits/warriors" in Yakuza Ishin is getting old. How did that go past play testing?

Gives me PS1 random encounter flashbacks.

Does that go for 0 as well? There was a reason for my question mark, but I feel like I understand the context for most scenes and even a lot of the humor, the latter usually being the best way to tell if a translation is off. Even okay translations will miss most humor through text. I even spotted a couple of word plays that were correctly altered so they fit English. I'm sure there are bad examples as well, but seeing as what we're used to for translations of asian video games, this one seems OK to me.

I played 0 a long time ago but from what I remember they did the usual stuff (remove honorifics, swap the order of the names, etc) but they also changed quite a bit of dialogue to insert jokes, memes and internet slang ('feels bad man', 'cool story bro', 'trolling', 'Holy Shitballs!' etc). Most of that happens in the substories. There is a clear disconnect between the dialogue and the 80's setting. For the main story the localisers like to amp things up, so to speak, they try to make every scene as badass and grand as possible, if that makes sense. 0 is not that bad in that regard tho, later games are much worse, especially the remasters.

Edit: I forgot to say, if you value your sanity for the love of God avoid the yakuza fanbase at large, dont interact with them in any way. Pretty much every place to discuss the games was overran by fujos and faggots.

I figured the "HOLY SHITBALLS" stuff wasn't far off the original (though obviously I realize it wasn't a direct translation). It seemed in keeping with the spirit of those moments which were pretty silly regardless, text or no text.

I'm old enough to remember when Western games had porn stars.

How did that quote go? You will live long enough to see horrors beyond your comprehension? Well I've seen trannies.

I can't play any of the games in English. The only game in the series that I played in English was the first PS2 game.

I work from home and have a couple of perceptive kids. Personally I don't care, it's a bygone era in a way, but the little shits ask some awkward questions on the fly.

I think I would play the games with the English dub if I could, though. You miss a lot of the acting and scene work reading those lines, and that stuff is, like I said, pretty good.
