You made my day, pal. I thought noone still believed PB lies about WHY G3 was so buggy, but alas you proved me wrong.

I'm not talking about some PR crap on the forums. I'm talking about what some Piranha guys told us in lectures/partys/etc. This is more on a (teacher-like) developer to developer level, and usually everyone is pretty honest there, ESPECIALLY about own mistakes.
They don't have a reason to lie to us about such things while being pretty honest about their other mistakes (and nobody ever said that there were no mistakes PB did in Gothic 3).

LOL!

Tangible information ;)
It's in German. The reviewer sounds gay and sadly the pc does so too.
What I got out of it: PB decided to give monsters German names in the German version. Looks to be somewhere between G2 and G3 gameplay and world wise.
Some monsters always had German names, despite the odd abundancy of English names.
I find the differences between monsters more interesting. Skeletons are immune to arrows!
That's kinda cool... although it could get annoying if you're focused on ranged combat.

SO another wait a year until there is a fan patch that fixes most everything?
This ain't a JoWood game.

Wait, Risen and Arcania: A Gothic's Tale are 2 different games?!
Most definitely. Following PB's divorce from JoWood, PB started their own project called Risen (initially RPB), and JoWood entrusted SpellBound ((un)known for Desperados 1 & 2) with the next 'Gothic' title (the 4th ~ Arcania).

So Sir_Brennus, long time no see, tell me how you liked Forsaken Gods which was, allegedly, in the best hands with JoWood? Also, why the fuck do you keep doing this? Were you once a PB developer and got fired, and now need to release the anal pain and bitterness on the Codex? I'm assuming this is more than just pathetic trolling, and am genuinely interested in your motives. And no, I'm not a PB fanboi/apologist, nor am I a JoWood hater, just trying to be objective.

sir_brennus, what's your comment on this video?

Yeah, I forgot it was based on an entirely new engine, but it seems they've built it based on their past experience with the Gothic series. I mean, when you look at the above movie, it seems the game is pretty polished (unlike Gothic 3 in it's final stages)

Another thing - how long did it take Obsidian to make NWN 2?
I think it was something like two years, too, and they had to build the game with an editor in mind.

Although I was a huge fan of Gothic1+2, (except the squarky combat), and a big fan of Gothic 3 this game will not be officially released until the fan community finished patching it sometime in 2010. Huge Fan > Big Fan for those keeping score.

Wait, are you saying the combat in Gothic 1+2 sucks. :D

I'm saying that it's not nearly as smooth as Gothic 3 with the fan patch added. It's a very unintuitive system. While the combat in G3 was way too easy, it was definitely easier to get a handle on earlier in the game. Instead of worrying about dying because you didn't have the proper co-ordination, you could worry about your character's level/abilities.

Thanks for the videos and the information.

Art direction of Risen and Gothic 4 looks very similar. Lush, cartoony, and MMO-ish. Weird. Risen looks slightly better though, despite the (relatively) shitty character models that look like left overs from Gothic 2. Colour palette in G4 looks cheaply vivid.

-Character can climb now

About fucking time.

I think they did a good job with it, but for some reason all the English monster names and NPC names in Gothic always irked me a little. They took away just a tiny bit of grit; and English words really don't sound pretty next to clunky German words.

Topic: two years? Oh man. Still hoping, though.

This looks surprisingly good. I can't understand the German, but it looks like Gothic 1 with updated graphics.

I know at least some guys from PB and I seriously can't imagine them releasing a completely buggy game, if they have a choice.

That says nothing about the gameplay, of course.

BTW: This is how a good "Gothic-like" video should look in freaking ALPHA status!

That looks like something that was given birth to after WOW and Oblivion had sex.

I didn't really notice it in the early Gothics until I started discussing it on English forums
But now the monster names are German but we still have npcs named Neil. And now it bothers me a little...

And it looks surprisingly good for such a short dev cycle, maybe they trimmed the scope/content, but didn't cut on ideas and features. Hmm.

What wasn't intuitive?

The whole hold down the attack button while straffing to attack right to left felt very unfinished and choppy, (pun unintended). Just felt amateurish especially now that we've had a chance to play mount and blade.

You did it wrong! /fanboy

Seriously, your description sounds as if you did things the wrong way around. You tried to play Gothic as if it were M&B.

Generally I'd say both systems are very different and hit different spots. I prefer Gothic's timing + chaining attacks to M&B's fast-paced "lean in one direction and hope that the game recognizes from which direction you want to attack". The controls are just too sloppy and I never got the perfect hang of them...
