Italy not defending Rome or Naples is surprising

A VEN - ROM
F ION - NAP
F TYR S F ION - NAP would have allowed to recapture the NAP without losing Rome, Venice was a goner.

with 2 centers gone to rather than one, and given the isolation of the centers/fleets, Italy can’t defend anything properly, at best hold on Spain/Portugal for a time.

The Turkish Army in Galicia can probably be leveraged. It is a very nice position against Germany, less so against Austria.

I am long on Austria again due to Italian movement, and bet on an agreement on Constantinople with maybe even a support to retake SMY in exchange of support against the Germans

Most of the Germans firepower is tied in fleets or in France, but nonetheless he will have on the short run 3 armies vs 4. That’s why being able to use the Turkish army and being able to bring the army from Romania would bring that to 6:3 ratio, while Germany has nothing to offer Turkey who disappears next year if Austria wishes so.

It may be tempting for Austria to just finished off Turkey, but this will give time for Germany to reorganize (UK is defenceless) and its current potential for cores is 16 as Spain/Portugal are out of reach.

Nope! Just entered fall 1906. Although I don't think the discussion of the game by "spectators" really influences players' moves and diplomacy, just to be 100% sure I think it makes sense to wait until a full season after a turn before posting updates. E.g. I (or anyone else) can post the results from spring 1906 after fall 1906 is over.

For completeness' sake (and for more pretty colours), here is the situation after the 1905 builds:

  • Smyrna DESTROY -> resolved
  • Ionian Sea DESTROY -> resolved

Tough going for you once Austria blobbed up. I feel like as Turkey you're hugely dependent on Russia proving trustworthy & competent.

Honestly Turkey is not the hardest country to win with, but it is the least interesting country to play. Austria is almost your natural enemy as you cannot really out of the Balkans without removing Austria (development toward Russia is hampered by Sebastopol being only one province and Rumania typically being into Austrian hands, while moving against Italy makes you very vulnerable to an Austrian betrayal). So this leaves Russian as a neigbour you can talk with, maybe Italy and to a lower extent Germany but that's all.

It also means that when you talk to someone, everyone knows pretty well what you really want so it is really hard to "surprise" anyone.

I was, but Russia wasn't responsive to my messages, and I wasn't sure what his intentions were, so that's why I moved into the Black Sea.

Austria teaming up with Italy and moving east, with no help or communiqué from Russia, pretty much sealed my fate

I played Turkey in one of my first games years ago where I got to a very strong position but eventually got driven back by an alliance of England, Germany (later eliminated by England) and Italy. I had some good early moves and diplomacy, but I didn't have any real tactical understanding of stalemate lines or some of the intricacies of support, so I eventually got driven all the way back despite reaching all the way to the "neutral" (non-SC) provinces that divide the map at first. In the endgame I also gave up on diplomacy or trying to communicate with the other remaining players, mistakenly thinking that there was nothing to talk about once I had attacked/stabbed them. Yes, I still sometimes have to fight my Armoured Duck tendencies.

I guess Turkey can get off to a great start if he can trick Russia into leaving the Black Sea open. But I think many Russian players would always move there; all the better if Turkey says he isn't! Even if Turkey succeeds, if the competition is any good, they will generally understand that Turkey has "stabbed" someone in spring 1901 and it will make him less reliable in everyone's eyes. Same problem as Italy: if he successfully attacks Austria, that usually means he has fooled both Austria and Germany that he wouldn't move into Tyr, and then did it anyway, and that's two powers pissed off with you who could otherwise be decent allies. If Russia has successfully attacked Austria as well, you're still looking good, but otherwise the Italian is probably not going to do much.

In that particular game as Turkey (I have to dig deep in my memory here) Austria still trusted me for some reason and I was able to stab him too. A good Austria usually isn't gonna be a reliable long-term ally, but I was lucky to be dealing with a sucka at that time. But after that everyone basically saw me get too strong too quickly and so the grand alliance inevitably formed. If we play another game after this one, I partially hope I can play Turkey to achieve a better result than in the two Codex games so far. But I also partially dread it. Also most people are fascinated by opening strategy and Turkey just has very few options there.

I'm trying to jog my memory what happened with Turkey in the previous Codex game. That player started strong, but was eventually beaten back by a belated A-I alliance. He also didn't have a reliable Russia to work with IIRC. So it can be a very frustrating nation to play.

Yeah, I don't know about OP/UP, but I generally find France/Germany/Austria interesting to play, while Turkey in particular just feels like, say, you've got 2 options and which one you choose is mostly up to the others.

Of course, and then I always just get Italy.

The game mechanics are solid and the website works well. New players will learn the game rules and the website interface during their first few games.

Like wwsd said many Diplomacy players are obsessed with the perfect move and play like Chess players.

The question in my mind is how does a chaotic and unpredictable element influence the decisions of the other players?

I am really puzzled at the German losing Munich when it should have been 2:2

Russian inactivity is really playing in the German hands, too.
