Nah, there are a ton of awesome rpgs worshiped here on the codex from the late '80s/early '90s that have nothing to do with avellone.

Lands of Lore 2 is my favorite game, leave it alone.

Was gonna add Legend of Dragoon & Chronocross to the shitty list. Any jrpg dialogue sucks, really.

OK, the worst/most overrated CRPGs that I've tried:
Disciples of Steel - Clunky controls. Small view window + large, mostly empty cites. Having to manually check the prices on each item in turn in shops. Inadequate documentation. Very poor graphics for a 1994 DOS game (just a port from the four years older Atari ST/Amiga version, I guess).

After giving this game a second chance I have to change my opinion. It's actually one of the best CRPGs I've played, despite it's fault.
The shop UI and non menu towns are annoying, but the things that for me is the very core of a good CRPG - combat system, encounter design, character system and loot - it does very well.
This game is a prime example that first impressions may be wrong.

I generally make it a habit to play games I'm going to enjoy. The RPGs I don''t enjoy tend to be the JRPGs where I don't get behind the gimmick. I have a hard time saying those are "bad" games though -- they just didn't do it for me

One I feel was a huge letdown was Final Fantasy 12. This could have been the crowning game of the Final Fantasy series (I say that as a dogmatic lover of VI and SNES Final Fantasies in general), but so much mediocrity was doctored into it by way of executive fiat.

Hmm... There are like a tonshits of bad games, but recently: Wasteland 2.
The good: (but im easy) atmosphere, plot.
The bad: absolutely everything else.
This isn't a Wasteland game, this isn't reminiscent of Fallout either. It's just a post-apo setting.
And honestly I fear the worst for Tides of Numenera since then.

Agreed. It gave me the feeling of playing an offline MMO.

My biggest disappointment was 2400 AD (1987)

I remember me and my friends as kids pooled our money to buy it, as it looked badass and had a favorable review in a magazine; it turned out to be a complete disappointment, no challenge, no strategy, ugly graphics. Ironically, I've forgotten about many other games from when I was 12, but this bastard sticks to my brain.

I didn't follow any development stories and went in 100% blind on Dragon Age: Inquisition. I figured Dragon Age 2's glaring issues were chalked up to time restrictions. Nope. That was probably the biggest burn I can recall since Diablo 3.

Shadow Hearts: From the New World. Not a bad game in its own right, but was nowhere near the quality of its predecessor. Covenant was top tier ps2 RPG.

Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume. You took the name and made it into a bad SRPG, what the fuck Tri-Ace?

NWN2 OC. Again, not bad, just uninspired and kinda bland. The tutorials in the village felt more like they made a RTwP-RPG into an MMO with its camera. Trial was cool as shit, though.

There's plenty of bad RPGs but the worst ones have to be the ones held up on a fucking pedestal by fans while they are exemplary pieces of decline. These would be Fallout 3 and Oblivion. Both, even if you ignore their biggest mind numbing, offensively retarded, uniquely fucked up mistakes, are still dull to the point of physical pain. I wish I could erase them from history for the good of not only videogames, but mankind.

Or you could just mod them. One little mod is enough to get rid of the level scaling in Oblivion, for example.

Thanks for the worthless post, retard. That game is unsalvagable. Not even if Odin, Zeus and Vishnu all came down from heaven on a holy quest to fix the abomination, they still would find it offensively stupid and boring to the point of physical mental anguish. So many individual parts of it are broken that no fan could ever hope to bring it to a state where it's very existence isn't offensive.

In that order, Oblivion had one reedeming feature compared to Skyrim, the setting/scenery was more inspired imo.
I can't wrap my head around how Bethesda is so praised in the game industry and among the general public. I just can't.

Lately I don't play very many games.

I did play Morrowind however. It has a lot of good aspects. However the lack of story pissed me off. I did not play the expansion.

PoE (what a shitburger)
Dungeon Siege (just so boring)
Morrowind (worst mmo ever!)
Alpha Protocol (holy shit)
Gothic 2+3 (one was mediocre but not horrible)
NWN 1
NWN 2 (better than one but still pretty shitty, just very mediocre with a side of really shit encounter design)
Lionheart (probably the worst game ever)
Ultima 8 - awesome by today's standards but I was amazingly choked at the time.
Ultima 9 - I am not a learning animal
Wiz 8 - some good ideas, but shitty execution
Fallout NV - I will never let the fucking codex sucker me again. Still shit.
Every Jeff vogel game except the first geneforse
Pool of Radiance : Ruins of Myth Drannor (forgot this - much worse than lionheart)
Eschalon
