The codex is already hosted for free from sorcerer.net so the caretaker obivously has sugar caned in his butt. I bet with the donations alone we already paid off our bandwith exceedings. Also remeber when people donated for the server ram upgrade?

The people who are willing to donate is plenty enough, and people epescially here will donate every month. We already have $40+ within the day of the announcement and they had no promise of SUPAR GOLD MEMBERSHIP AVATAR PASSSOR by chris.

CHRIS UR A FAGGOT AND I HOPE U BECOME DED.

You do want a lot more money from a lot more people to be donated to the codex dont you ?

Whatever, you're acting like a condescending prick about something that's a good idea
implying I'm fishing for compliments when I was just having a laugh at Volourns post count.
This place doesn't strike me as some kind of sycophant circle jerk where you need to "buy" some kind of status. Everybody here at the Codex digs their own hole, and yours just got deeper.

Honestly, who here would be more willing to donate if they had some stupid little "special member" title or whatever, more so than if you got nothing?

And Chris assmuncher, yes, I do care *ENOUGH* that if I had extra money to spend, that I would. How old are you Christopher?

Hmm, just read this. So do we just need to shut up until Sunday? They said you went over the quota of 52 GB by about 6 GB, which can probably be attibuted to the Bethesda invasion which seems to have settled down. Chris did seem to have a point as far as trimming some of the fat, too. So is this a big problem or do the already existing donations take care of the probably one-time overflow?

closer to the north pole thant to my hometown
personally, apart from lurking the forums I already get a service from this site, reviews and good hints about what to play.
this helped me to spend better my money, so I can donate part (very small part, to be honest) of something for this service and to keep it going.
simple as that, no brainstorming

What kind of donation are we talking about here? As much as I like this site, there is the fact that I'm an university student without any weekend/afternoon job, meaning that I barely have enough money to buy games, let alone pay money to discuss games. That said, I'm willing to pitch in, but I'd like to know what kind of money would be considered an acceptable donation.

do like $10 or something, $1 per GB is how most harddrives go, so i'd just do something like that in terms of bandwith donations.

$10 is 1/6th of the thingy, so rock it.

Ignoring POOPERSCOOPER's infantile posts, there are a few questions and issues popping up here that need some explanation, so here goes.

1. All the concentration here on cutting down on the bandwidth usage is completely pointless. Successful growing sites will be using progressively more and more bandwidth, no matter what you do. Limiting it and removing some features might work as a temporary solution, but that's it. Eventually, it'll start growing again. And no site should limit itself on account of bandwidth usage, especially one that doesn't really host any larger files.

Bandwidth usage here isn't really that big of a problem. The amount of people on the site is, and that's the most taxing thing in the whole process. So, stop concentrating on how to save bandwidth, because short of killing off some users, you can't really do it.

2. Since this post has gone up, $70 in donations has come in. Saint has been short on money and couldn't pay the part of the hosting bill these last two months that I have to charge him because the shitty Google ads bring in only a grand whole of about $5 a month, and he won't let me put up popups, which would at least generate SOME income. All because he wants to give you lot a more pleasant browsing experience.

So, again, the retarded comments about how much money has been made can go to hell along with the idiots making them. This site is making 0 income with advertising, and up until today (saving the RAM upgrade, where I think 2 people from Codex donated), hasn't received a single donation. I, on the other hand, have to pay the hosting bill for the server every month. Do the math.

3. (Special) avatars / signatures for people who donate are a good idea, and I hope Saint will implement it. Not because it would lower bandwidth usage (which, as I've explained before, is not really an issue in our case), but because it would get a group otherwise collectively highly unlikely to do anything for the site in terms of supporting it, to rethink their philosophy. I understand how it is - as long as you're just an user, you don't give a shit about how the people who run the site manage to keep it up every month. Not getting everything on a silver platter unless you do something for the site, however, might get them to spare a few moments to think about it. And maybe even contribute a buck or two.

4. The "but I don't have a credit card" excuses are completely pointless, so please don't make any more. You can send me or Saint cash or a check directly via snail mail to pay the bills. If you don't want to, or can't, that's fine - just say so. But don't say "oh, I WOULD donate, but I can't because I don' have a credit card". That's bull, and you know it.

Sorry, I'm late for this party. Here is 50 bucks, hope that helps. As for the discussion, I do believe that all kinda Gold Members crap is retarded. I doubt that people who didn't give a shit, suddenly would be willing to help.

One thing:
The bandwidth usage for dynamic content *can* be drastically cut down by using GZIP output buffering. You need to give me SUDO rights so I can recompile PHP with that stuff built in. =D

One more thought: if you can afford to pay for crappy games that you play out of boredom, there is no reason why you shouldn't be able to pay $5-10, assuming that you like the site and care, of course.

Edit: It's not about paying to post, Volourn, don't be stupid. It's about helping out if you can.

Calis, as I said, bandwidth's not really the issue here, I can give Codex as much as it needs. I'm not giving you that much access to mess around with the server for something that's not really necessary anyway.

Jesus fucking Christ. If RPGCodex's business is delivery of text-based services (news, game/article/review database, forum), and if the images are irrelevant, then maybe reduce the site to minimum graphics?

That being said, I don't understand how avatars can generate a lot of traffic. They are being cached on client's browser, right?

Ok, but it's a pretty easy way to cut down your text traffic by about 80% (which is most of the traffic, seeing how images and such get cached). And yeah, I was joking about the sudo thing.

Payday is Friday for me so I'll see if I can chip in a few dollars to help out. :)

The whole "pay money for special privledges" malarky does more to discourage me from visiting and posting on message boards than anything save pop-ads (I absolutely hate pop-ads). If RPG Codex, or any other site I visit regularly, asks for help to keep alfoat and I have a little extra money to spare then I will donate. It's not a matter of getting material gain from my "purchase," it's a matter of the satisfaction knowing that even my tiny bit of help can make a difference, and nowdays that's something very few people seem to find in their everyday lives.

I understand Saint Proverbius' request because I also help administer two message boards myself, and simply keeping a board ad-free can be an expensive task, especially if you have to shoulder the brunt of the costs yourself. Personally, I have a great deal of respect for Saint Proverbius, as well as the other admins, when it comes to their dedication in maintaining the Codex. It's a very time consuming task, especially when you are a news source, and the fact they do this without complaint (for the most part :D) is a heartening sight in a world slipping further into apathy.

Thanks, PJ. You are a giant among men, your name shall be written in the annals of the Codex. I hope that your example and sacrifice will inspire those greedy bastards who'd rather pay for porn and extra cheese on pizza then do something nice for the community.:)

Since it's not hard to find free porn, I'll follow SLD's example.

EDIT: Except that PayPal isn't working right now. Grr.

A person who's donating out of his porn budget, shouldn't suffer by having to look for free porn. Somebody send him a complimantary set of goatse and tubgirl right away. It's on the house. :)

You're onto something there, VD. Forget ULTRA PLATINUM FRIEND OF CODEX accounts, let's just send everyone who donates a unique picture of Rex nekkid.
