Also I should mention Heroes of Jin Yong. Granted practically no one anywhere else in the English internet seems to know anything about it, but it's probably the most classic of all indigenous Chinese RPGs. And I abandoned it during an LP this very site, to my deepest shame.

In my defense, it wasn't objectively a very good game...

I tend not to finish most games, regardless of genre. I get to a certain point, normally near the end, and I simply stop since many games get easy towards the end. I just lose interest.

Arcanum: I recognize why it's loved by those who do, but I just can't get more than a few hours into it despite trying repeatedly.

Mask of the Betrayer: Can't stomach epic level D&D combat. My sweet spot, enjoyment wise, is from the third to ninth level or so.

20 Eyes: A dozen or so? You realize it was votes into the Holy Trinity a million times right?

Ok, several dozen. I stand corrected, but my first post was mostly hyperbole. I think even Arcanum's biggest fans would admit it's a deeply flawed/incomplete game, and it's definitely not a game that receives unanimous praise. But then again, nothing does around here. Maybe Fallout 1, JA2, and X-Com are the closet I've seen to reach 'unanimous praise' around here.

Even though most editions have ridiculous possibilities at level 1, such as a house cat beating up an adult male mage and a fighter becoming roughly 5x as powerful after gaining a single level, I've always enjoyed the modest adventures of level 1 and 2 D&D.

Betrayal at Krondor. Looking at the character leveling system and reading about how the game's economy works really made my stomach turn.

Mask of the Betrayer. Cheating a bit for this one, I did eventually beat it, but the red wizard academy made me take a 2 year break. God, what a shitty area. I googled around for a "skip" mod for that area, like the one BG2's first dungeon has, and couldn't find one.

For me it would be pretty much everything involving DnD and real-time combat.
That list includes Icewind Dale 1 & 2, Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 as well as NWN2:MotB.

There's Wizardry 8 as well, I got about half-way - the speed of the combat didn't bother me too much, it was more that fact that enemy health became increasingly bloated as the game went on.

Bloodlines; it has very interesting things going on but something is horrible wrong with the city as a location. An absolute atmosphere killer for me, especially when atmosphere and story is basically the main factor to play the game.
That's interesting. Personally I felt the city setting added a lot to the game. You got the night clubs, the shady clinics and dark alleyways.
I do think they could have varied it a bit though. Maybe if a part of the game could have taken place in a more rural area, that would have been interesting.

I would have been fine with city location only. It's more that the city felt like a cardboard-city, a theatre coulisse. There was stuff that showed you this is a street, this is a nightclub etc. but most of it wasn't fleshed out enough for my taste. The nightclub especially made me scratching my head what they were thinking when they created it.... All in all just not enough to fool around and doing stuff, it always felt like I'm running through corridor levels even when the location was an open one.

The game wasn't shit, it had really good moments, but all in all not enough to encourage me to play further. I still have the game, maybe one day...

I too, never have finished Arcanum. The game is good, but the horrible combat always eventually caused me to lose interest in the game after I passed halfway through the game.
Whenever I start Fallout 2 these days I don't really finish it too, it all falls apart after The Den, or maybe Modoc.

Finished BG2, but not ToB - there is something about high level D&D that is really boring to me.
In the past I often started ToeE and never finished it, thankfully there is the community patch and I remedied this fact last year.

Never really played original Deus Ex because it gives me nausea when playing it :(

The skills of NPC in the game is the least thing I worry about in Fallout 2. :P Someone in this thread already nailed it why and I don't want to start this "FO1/2 which is better and why" discussion again. ;P

Ultima's... never get into it. First, on Amiga 500 U6 was slow and somewhat uninspiring technically, but now, with excellent Exult (U7) ... I have no excuse... really.

Ps. Anyway... starting an RPG is like having sex, you'll have to finish - one way or another.
Ps2. Ultima VIII doesn't count as "ultima", right?

A lot of hate for Arcanum. I can see why. Great rpg, shitty game.

For me, Fallout 1 and 2. Dunno why, but they didn't capture me and i couldn't stomach the engine.

People that like RPGs but hate D&D give me this weird, eerie feeling, as if the world has been warped with little chance of becoming saved.

Nice strawman. I haven't stated anything about only liking D&D (I'm the resident GURPS fanboy and play maybe 8 or 9 systems consistently), but D&D is an excellent system especially for a computer roleplaying game.

All Obsidian games - they basically make shit games with decent writing. There were exactly two titles where story made me forget about shitty gameplay - P Torment and Silent Hill 2, and Obsidian is not even close to changing that.
All Troika games - different story than Obsidian, their games actually have lots of awesome elements and huge, huge potential, but also awful design flaws that make them broken at best and tedious at worst.
All Bioware games except BG2 - Bioware are like that band that makes 1 hit song and 100 failures. I know that they are far from being widely praised here, but titles like BG, KOTOR and even DAO still get a lot of credit.

I also didn't like a single Elder Scrolls game, even the good ones - Arena-Daggerfall-Morrowind, but won't call them bad or anything, their basic formula is simply not for me.

All in all, I rate this thread :4/5: for showing how many people here gorge on shitcakes like New Vegas and at the same time claim gems like Wiz8 to be boring. Prestigious individuals indeed.

How are Obsidian and Bioware games unanimously praised?

lol, you find Temple of Elemental Evil tedious but Wiz8 is a gem.

Literal nausea or facetious nausea? If it's the later, and it's because of the graphics, I'd recommend making one more solid try at it. I had this problem too for a while, as someone that didn't play the game when it first came out, but after I stuck with it for a few hours the dated graphics didn't bother me anymore. Eventually I became one with 2000 1998. It's one of those games that lives up to the hype.
