Recently? Legend of Grimrock. I knew what I was getting into, but as a DM clone it fails. Even DM with DOS era graphics and resources of that era had more charm and variety than LoG. How hard would it been to ensure the textures in dungeons changed, so that there was some feeling of progression (more weeds, roots, or even dungeon rock/bricks giving way to plain ground/rock as you get deeper underground).

Other? Neverwinter Nights, not sure what part, 1 or 2, whichever one where you start on a ship (probably #2). As soon as I got to the land/coast I turned off that piece of shit. Haven't fired it up since then, although the game is still installed on my primary workstation.

More? Well ToEE seems to be this community's champion of what a RPG should be like. All I can say is... Hommlet. And yes I know... moathouse. Still, overrated piece of crap. Just because something is turn based and/or tugs at your nostalgia strings of tabletop D&D playing days, it does not mean it is good in any way. For reference see all the TB X-COM rip-offs of the early and mid 2000s.

So you really did not play Legend of Grimrock?

There was a lot of variety in textures, as it often became cleaner and more pristine and brighter (bluer) as you went further down. The place changed from a rotting dungeon to an ancient temple or palace.

I dunno, not sure which level I got to, I'm quite a few hours into it (no map) but the textures are are still the same. I got to the point where the spiders are predominant creature encounters.

No idea. The camera views/rotation is just bad. I mean BAD. Makes the game unplayable, period. Hilariously overrated piece of crap, if the amount of praise it (the series as a whole) gets on Codex is anything to go by. (I'm assuming the gameplay mechanics are the same throughout the series.) That was my first and only, and probably last foray into anything NWN.

Never really played original Deus Ex because it gives me nausea when playing it :(

Literal nausea or facetious nausea? If it's the later, and it's because of the graphics, I'd recommend making one more solid try at it. I had this problem too for a while, as someone that didn't play the game when it first came out, but after I stuck with it for a few hours the dated graphics didn't bother me anymore. Eventually I became one with 2000 1998. It's one of those games that lives up to the hype.

No, unfortunately it is literal nausea. I don't mind the graphics myself, they are functional - it is something with the depth of field or the framerate maybe that causes this to me, someone linked me to a fix for that ago but it still didn't work. :(

Don't really know what you're talking about, nothing related to NWN gets praise on the Codex except Mask of the Betrayer, an expansion for NWN2. And even there the camera controls are harshly criticized. What I think you played was the other expansion, Storm of Zehir.

I think it's kind of dumb to judge an entire series of games from one rushed, low-budget expansion pack, but whatever

Stupid question/comment Spockrock. They're all flawed games and nothing is unanimously praised. Why should anything be? If everyone likes it then it would need to be as nondescript as air or water.

Basically all of the most highly regarded RPGs on the Codex have been mentioned in this thread. That is fine. They're all flawed and all deserve some mentions. I've never been one to hold certain RPGs up really high and apart from not believing any of them actually deserve it, I only care about particular elements - what has been done right, and what wrong - and how we can suggest ways of improving them.

This whole "Holy Trinity" thing is a part of the caricatured Codex, not the serious Codex. It is there to be used as a way to show everyone else that the Codex represents something, not because it is some kind of gospel or universal truth around here. The Codex does represent something, but it is really hard for people to understand what that is from first glance.


As for answering this question I don't think I really can. Although there are lots that I haven't finished, there are few that I won't return to at some point, especially when it comes to the games that have higher regard born out of certain standout strengths, although returning can be problematic. RPGs are games you can't put down and pick up whenever you feel like. If you happen to stop playing a game for whatever reason and spend time away from it, you won't be able to easily go back to where you left off and probably shouldn't if you want a cohesive experience. It is a real investment that many people don't have time for even when they really love the things that RPGs have to offer.

If I was going to mention anything at all I would happily say Arcanum for the simple reason that its strengths tend not to put up a very strong fight against its flaws as many people seem to have noticed. It has strengths (the character system and setting are enough to make you feel really excited about the experience you are heading into), but it is a very hard thing to appreciate if you take exception to any of its bigger flaws like the combat and feeling of dilute emptiness across the world. I still intend to look into Arcanum more in the future, as I know it has more things to offer and learn from but more from an academic POV I suppose.

Anyway I imagine this thread will go some way to making this Clown fellow feel a bit better. He was being shunned and attacked from all angles for his support of Diablo 3 in its eponymous thread and I get the feeling he wasn't feeling so good about it, but this thread shows a much softer underbelly spreading wide across the prestigious Codex. Nothing wrong with that really.

I don't agree with people supporting a game like Diablo 3, though. Not even about enjoying the experience.

I had a frame rate problem on the game in wine - the animations were jerky and out of sync with the audio (and possibly the game too, but i never played it like that) - i did this:

Why would you tho, the game is rather bad.

I think it is rather nice actually.The music is fantastic, and the story so far seems good and engaging from the start.But there is always something about the game, I can't quite put my finger on it, that puts me off. It might be that I still haven't figured out how to repair items, and also that the items just disappear when they break. At least, I thinik that happened at least once with a dagger I was wielding, which makes no sense, or the staggering lack of information for the items: You basically never know if you can actually don an armor or a weapon before it is bought, and even then, you rarely know why you can't. Youi also don't know how far an item is from being broken it happens without warning, or indeed, if it is broken, or the problem is that you can't don the item at all. And I can't be bothered anymore to get the electronical manual, and keep alt+tabbing back and forth: This much should have been written in the game.

No game is sacred on the Codex. I think there's some people who hate Fallout because of the combat. There's a considerable number who think 'RPG' means 'roguelike'.

I dont like Fallout 1 as much as Fallout 2. Fuck! I dont like it half as much as 2. Clunky interface. I always say: "Boys, you want to describe the apex of Fallout universe, describe Fallout 2. 1 is just a pioneer, 2 is perfected version of 1."

If you play on a widescreen monitor, you might want to change the FOV to around 90. I had the same problem with Morrowind and this helped.
