Zero consistency of quality in Fallout 2 made it so unseemly when coming from the sound vision of the first, atmospherically it was all over the shop, I guess it's for people who prefer gameplay and questing over story, ambiance and and a clear vision of what the goal of the game is.

This. Fallout 2 just isn't that good of a game. I've always been surprised at the love it gets here.

I also tried a bit of Ultima VII and Arcanum, and had no desire to play anymore. Ultima VII because the writing is truly horrible, the world is horrible, and the combat is a mess. Arcanum because the writing and combat were pretty bad. The world was cool, though, so I'm tempted to try it again to see how if it gets better.

I agree, fallout 2 lost the feeling of wasteland and felt like a another fantasy game where you saved your village and world and get the girl(s).

It's pretty good as long as you don't keep caressing your FO1 box as you play it.

Unfortunately, Betrayal at Krondor. The game was great but I'm usually not good with first person games. Gave up halfway in because manoeuvring around the overworld map in first person view got too clunky for me. First person dungeon spelunking ala Ultima I can handle, but strangely not wide expanses. Oh well.

ToEE with Co8 mod. I kept playing on, and on, telling myself "wait a bit, it's gonna get better! just one more quest/dungeon!". Nope. Got as far as the Elemental Nodes then the boredom and mediocrity of it was too much and I quit.

Really, if it had actual fun story/quests it would have been bearable. D&D is just not suited for interesting tactical combat (even KotC broke down half-way, but was still fun because the combat was fast and furious and not a slogfest), and there were no interesting NPCs/story/etc to make up for it.

What's with all the tryhard newfags and mysterious wizened low posters? "Ooh Fallout 2 is shit that's why I didn't finish it!" What isn't said is that they never heard of Fallout 2 until they came here, thinking that Bethesda's masterpiece was the original starting point of awesomeness that they finished 7 times.

Actually if you are agreeing that FO2 is for people who prefer GAMEPLAY rather than a plot(you can count decent RPG plots on one hand)...then it actually makes FO2 a GOOD GAME and not a bad one.

I expect Grimlorns life to be threatened multiple times.
Some people's lists were getting too long. It was starting to look like some people didn't even like cRPGs

Most don't given the kinds of games they've said they haven't finished. Since there's hardly been any RPG's released in a decade, it's not like they've been so busy playing other awesome titles that they couldn't spare the time to finish at least one of the classics. What exactly DO they play then? Fags of War? COD? BF3?

Arcanum - couldn't get past the crap combat
Fallout 2 - Almost finished, lost interest at or just past San Francisco on multiple occassions
BG2 TOB - don't remember why I didn't finish TOB. I think I got wierded out carrying around a baby on my first playthrough. Then I proceeded to destroy the experience with mods
Daggerfall - too buggy
Morrowind - couldn't remember what I was supposed to be doing. Then destroyed with mods again.
Champions of Krynn - having trouble getting used to / accepting the tiny first person view box thing. Only Gold Box Game I've tried so far...

Well at least people are giving some kinds of legitimate excuses instead of retarded "it needs more corridors!" you would find elsewhere. That said, and I've said this in another thread last year, what's up with Fallout? I mean, why the reverence? Was this like a first lov... I mean a first game for many a Codexer? I can list at least 10 better games released the same years F1 and F2 hit the shelves. This sort of fanaticism reminds me of Valve fanbois and their love of anything that Valve shits out.

Also, PC RPG's have been in serious decline since about 2000 and now are pretty much extinct. Of course anything post year 2000 will suck in some way and later in that decade you get, the more imperfections you will find and more people will list them in this thread. For instance, why make NWN camera so retarded, and why even make the game fully 3D to begin with? Why not fixed isometric? I'll tell you why: early 2000s were an era when pretty much every developer and publisher alike were trying to infuse every game in every genre with "moar 3D!!!111!". Why did Morrowind suck so much and why was so much cut before it went retail? Decline. Why did Oblivion disappoint so much? Even more decline. Why did Skyrim pretty much go full retard? DECLINE OVERLOAD!

To get any kind of unanimity you have to go back in time even more, late 80's, early 90's at least. So far only Daggerfall (an open-ENDed game! wtf guys?) and maybe 1-2 other were listed from that era. Although, now that I said this, many a teenage contrarian will prove me wrong by Googling some titles and saying random shit.

let's see you do it (of course, you understand you'll have to list 10 better RPGs, since this is RPGCodex)

Gameplay? What was that, that somebody thought the mediocre combat of Fallout needed to have multiple boring dungeons filled with trash mobs? That there's almost no C&C? Want to help Vault City? Want to spy on them? Why not do both! Hell, I was working for all four games in New Reno at the same time. Perhaps you like collecting porn mags? Or getting sex traits so you can please mob bosses wives? Please, tell me about Fallout 2's gameplay.

Fallout 1/2 are good because they have amazing gameplay to go with the aesthetics/writing. Quest design and character creation are so wildly flexible the titles have incredible replayability -- which is why they're still being played. I also think the games capture the post-apocalyptic concept fairly well. It's not all grim-dark shit. You get the weird and the eccentric, too, something the Bethesda games kinda skipped on. I don't mean to be bombastic, but... really, the Fallout games are quintessential RPGs in my opinion. They just hit all the right spots.

Well obviously you cannot read then. You wrote 'THIS' in reply to a post that said Fallout 2 is for people that prefer GAMEPLAY over coherent story etc. Not my fault that you flunked basic reading and comprehension in school.
